Fleming’s Craft, Cave Spring’s Fortner lead Timesland track and field list in three events

William Fleming sophomore Warren Craft and Cave Spring junior Katie Fortner lead the early-season Timesland track field list in three events heading into this weekend, which will feature the Amherst Invitational in Amherst and the All-American Relays in Radford.

Craft, who has committed to Virginia Tech to play basketball, leads the area in the long jump (21 feet, 11 1/2 inches), triple jump (44-5 1/2) and 300-meter hurdles (40.10 seconds). The rankings are based on major invitational and postseason meets.

Fortner leads Timesland in the 800 meters (2:15.72), 1,600 (5:09.06) and 3,200 (10:36.82). Fortner’s 3,200 that she ran in Raleigh, N.C. in March ranked her No. 8 nationally at the time.

Also, Fort Chiswell’s Daniel Hamm is proving to be one of Timesland’s most versatile athletes. Hamm already has a 47-10 1/2 shot put, a 6-2 high jump jump, a 20-6 1/2 long jump and a 43-8 1/2 triple jump.

Cave Spring vs. Hidden Valley in Final 4

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is coming down to a semifinal between Cave Spring and Hidden Valley?

That’s right. Wichita, coached by Cave Spring alumnus Gregg Marshall; will face Louisville, whose rotation includes Hidden Valley graduate Luke Hancock, in one semifinal Saturday in Atlanta.

The other game pits Michigan against Syracuse. The Syracuse lineup includes former Oak Hill Academy standout Baye Moussa Keita at center. Michigan is coached by former Richmond coach John Beilein, whose son Patrick played for Benedictine High in Richmond against Roanoke Catholic in a 2002 game at Roanoke College that was one of the best high school games I’ve ever covered.

High school and college basketball fans in this part of Virginia are fortunate to have the links to the top levels of NCAA basketball.
