Bill Hodges, who coached Indiana State University to the 1979 NCAA men’s basketball final and who took North Cross to a boys state championship game in March, has retired following a 43-year coaching career.

The 68-year-old Hodges said Wednesday night that he has been suffering from inflammation in an artery that has affected his eyesight, forcing him to step down as boys coach and history teacher at the Roanoke County private school after two seasons.

“It’s not life-threatening,” Hodges said. “It’s just a problem that’s going to be a long-term healing process.

“I was having real severe headaches. I thought it was just blood pressure. After all the tests, the doctors didn’t say, ‘You can’t coach,’ they just strongly advised against it.”

Here’s one of the stranger prep items you will see:

The North Cross baseball team has been facing the possibility of seeing the 2013 season end one step shy of the VIS Division III tournament.

The VIS rankings — voted on by a panel of coaches and administrators — determine selection and seeding in VIS state events. The Division III baseball bracket will include eight teams. North Cross was ranked No. 9 heading into this week’s Virginia Independent Conference tournament.

Or so everyone thought.

Tuesday, North Cross athletic director and baseball coach Eric Lawrence said that the Division III poll has been skewed all spring because the team ranked right above the Raiders at No. 7 — Randolph-Macon Academy — isn’t supposed to be in the Division III poll.

Lawrence said he was told by a VIS official that R-MA is supposed to be in the Division I poll. Oops.

Bottom line, North Cross is now No. 8 and that’s a big deal heading into a VIC first-round game that might not be played.

North Cross was scheduled to play at Covenant on Tuesday, but the game was rained out and reset for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. If today’s game is rained out, it will not be played at all. Under VIC rules, the higher-seeded team will automatically advance to the semifinals. In this case, that would be No. 4 Covenant.

So in light of all the recent rain, North Cross’ move up to No. 8 in the poll could give the Raiders some extra innings.

Rain wiped out just about everything Tuesday. The updated tournament schedule is below:

A former head coach at Glenvar and North Cross before serving as Fleming’s coach for the last three years, the 43-year-old Johnson has not worked as an assistant coach since 2001 when he was on the staff at William Byrd.

“Being a head coach, sometimes you don’t get to coach as much on the field as you do when you’re a position coach because there are so many other things to take care of,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he contacted Fiddler this spring about the vacancy. He is hoping to land a teaching position at Patrick Henry when contracts go out later this month.

“I was looking at some things, but there weren’t a whole lot of jobs in this area,” Johnson said. “My daughter will be a senior [at Salem High School] this fall and I didn’t want to move.

“Alan’s a good coach to work for. We’ve gotten along since he got to Patrick Henry.”

George Wythe has two basketball head coaching vacancies, with the recent resignation of boys coach Joey Russell after five years on the job.

Bradley Sutphin said he resigned earlier in April after four years in charge of the Maroons’ girls program.

I spoke with both men Wednesday night. They both plan to retain their teaching positions and were limited in their comments about their departures. Russell has been at George Wythe for 18 years and is a football assistant and former head baseball coach.

Russell, who was an assistant under Al Copenhaver when George Wythe won the 2007-08 VHSL Group A Division 2 championship, had a 48-2 record in Hogoheegee games. The Maroons were unable to advance past the Region C tournament under Russell, falling in the semifinals four times, mostly against very tough opponents.

The Maroons also were eliminated in the region twice by Radford and once each by James River and Fort Chiswell. Radford won two Division 2 state titles and James River claimed one during that span.

George Wythe was 14-12 overall last winter, losing to Graham in a first-round regional game.

Sutphin posted a 32-61 overall record as George Wythe’s girls coach, reaching the Region C Division 2 tournament once. The Maroons posted an 18-22 record in the Hogoheegee.

George Wythe’s girls were 7-15 overall last winter and 4-6 in the Hogoheegee.

No doubt, George Wythe has boasted one of Timesland’s most successful boys basketball programs in the last three decades. A losing season in Wytheville is virtually unheard of.

Check out these statements from Wythe County school superintendent Lee Brannon:

“I would think the two programs in this part of the state that would be the most attractive are, one, Radford; and two, George Wythe,” he said. “There is an opportunity for future success.”

Brannon said the administration already has received feelers from “two very high-profile coaches close to us who have been very successful where they are.”
