I watched this episode at my parents' house tonight. After a fabulous bowl of vegetable soup and a chocolate chip cookie that my dad kept eyeing, we dove right into the show.
So it was ladies night and there was some good singin' going on.
Let's run through it....
Second-rate Whitney
Asia'H Epperson came out with a bang singing Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." At first I was nervous because anyone who tries to tackle Whitney, especially a fast song, usually fails. But Asia'H hit the nail on the head and it's mostly because of the emotion behind her voice.
Mom said she was one of the best she's heard sing a Whitney song. Simon compared her to a second-rate Whitney, to which Asia'H said she'd take that anyday.
'Must've been on the back side of the record'
Kady Malloy is just not good. Not good. She should've left last week. I still think the audience got it wrong and sent Alaina Whittaker home by mistake.
Anyway, I had no idea what Queen song that was. Dad said he didn't either so it must've been on the back side of the record. (Remember records? The "B side" was always bad.)
I think the song she chose was poor given the fact she needed to pull out all of the stops for this performance. Mom said she's much better when she's imitating people. Ditto. And Simon had it right when he compared her to a Stepford wife. Her personality is lacking .. big time .. on stage.
Paula is drunk
Paula was in very rare form tonight. She was trying to make the show about her. So, Paula, because you're so starved for attention and your days of "Straight Up" are way over, here's a small entry dedicated just to you. You were passing out on Simon, blabbering about nothing and just all-around annoying. It used to be funny, but now it's sad and completely takes away from the performances.
Rocker chick is back
Amanda Overmyer did her thing tonight. I lost a little hope after last week's performance (and hairstyle), but tonight she rocked it. I'm a fan of Joan Jett. She had the rhythm, the voice and the dance moves down. I think she saved herself, at least for another week. The judges gave her some flack for not smiling. You know, some people just don't smile all the time. Besides, she was probably thinking about tomorrow night and how she'll be forced to sell out and wear some ridiculous 80s outfit and blue eye shadow and sing with the other contestants, Sha-Na-Na-style, or whatever.
'Dependable dog'
Carly Smithson sang Celine's "I Drove All Night" and nailed it to the wall, of course. She's going to be the top girl, I think. (And mom and dad think so, too.) When Carly sings, it's effortless. Effortless to me is a sign of true and natural talent. She's got it. Mom is not a fan of the tattoos, though.
Kristy Lee Cook ... who's she?
We were wondering what Kristy would pick for her 80s song. The style of country music that she sings wasn't really big in the 80s (or maybe I just didn't listen to it). Her rendition of Journey's "Forever Yours" was killer. She made the song hers and kicked some major A, I thought. It was a smart move. America already likes her, but still, it was nice reinforcement. Simon said she was forgettable, but I don't think so. She's kind of America's sweetheart, right?
Get her name right, Randy
Ramiele's got a great voice, but I don't think she's going to advance too much farther. I couldn't decide if I liked her Phil Collins song or not. While trying to put my finger on it, Randy summed it up for me. It's like she's thinking while she's singing. Her emotion doesn't come through 100 percent and I think he's right. She's thinking about the next run of the song rather than just feeling it and singing from the heart. L8r.
White wins it for me tonight
OK, Brooke White's version of Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" was awesome. I was waiting for someone to clinch it tonight, and I think it was Brooke. (I love Carly, though, but this song did it for me tonight.) Brooke's voice is so pure, and she's got awesome stage presence, even when she's just sitting on the edge of it. I watched it again and loved it even more the second go-round. I'd buy that cassingle, if those still existed.
(Random thought: Paula's drunkeness tonight seemed to take a belligerant turn. Anyone who would talk smack to Brooke White has got to be a little out of it.)
They gave her the shaft
Because Paula spent so much of the hour engaging Simon and Randy in her drunken babble, they ran out of time after Syesha sang Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love." Hopefully this won't affect the voting because Syesha delivered a solid performance. Sure, it was pretty predictable and unoriginal, but how many people do you know who can sing like Whitney? I think she'll be fine.
Who should go? Kady Malloy and Ramiele. Amanda could get the boot, but I think she might slide through. Mom and dad both agree that Carly and David A. will be the two left standing in the end. I think so, too.
Aww, the happy family.

Jen (too)I agree with most of what you said. I wonder if the top two women will be Carly and Syesha.
I stil don't get why after what 8 years of this show they still pick Whitney and Celine songs? As messed up as Whitney turned out to be, she could belt out a song in her prime.
I think Asia'h did well and Kristy Lee Cook's song was good.
The guys outshine the girls by a comfortable margin this year.

Amy Hanek : →http://www.houseonthegladehill.blogspot.comLast night I enjoyed the show more. It was less painful. I am sure it was because the girls made better song choices and because they had a little more fun.
Strong players worth watching were: Amanda O., Kristy Cook (come on, Journey? That just brought us all back to seventh grade dances... always the last song played - your LAST chance for a slow dance), and Brooke White. Brooke played her cards with genius ingenuity. I mean who would love to buy a CD with "Love is a Battlefield" done with an acoustic, folky twist? Me. Me! MEEEEEE! She really raised the bar for everyone else involved. Carly S. - I didn't forget her. She was good, but I enjoyed the other songs better. I wish she had sung something a little less depressing. She has so much talent, but it really is about the audience too!
