Mariah Carey the mentor

Mariah Carey is the mentor on "American Idol" tonight. I've never really been a Mariah Carey fan. But it's OK, right? We all have our own opinions. I like Madonna. Many of you probably don't. So I can take it.

Therefore I will keep my comments to myself and admit that, yes, I know she recently surpassed Elvis in No. 1 hits. And she is talented. On the flip side (maybe just one comment), Elvis has been dead (or has he?) for a long time.

I feel certain that if digital downloading was an option during the King's reign, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. (Well, I wouldn't be having this conversation with myself.)

Anyway, Mariah coaches the remaining contestants tonight and then performs during Wednesday night's results show. Does anyone else get a little creeped out by her lyrics in "Touch My Body"?

If there's a camera up in here Then I'd best not catch this flick On YouTube (YouTube) 'Cause if you run your mouth and brag About this secret rendezvous I will hunt you down

I guess it's just the world we live in now.

Wanna bet Syesha sings "Vision of Love"?

Kennedy

Mariah Carey night was the last, best chance for the girls to catch up to the boys in trying to win this competition. The ladies did nothing to change my opinion that we are going to have a David v. David final.

David Cook has shown that he is the most talented, most marketable performer in the competition this year. His take on “Always Be My Baby” (I hope this was an arrangement he authored) really made the song a contemporary masterpiece. The performance will certainly be a top download this week for the ipod generation.

David Archuleta did not have his A-game working tonight (for the second week in a row), but he should sail through to next week on his huge popularity with the tweeners.

Jason did his usual effort, which has proven to move him along in the competition; I cannot imagine he will be in the bottom three this week. I also cannot imagine that he will ever have a gold record.

My prediction is that Kristie Lee Cook will again join the boys on the safety couch this week. Ms. Cook continues to be smart and savvy with her song choices, arrangements, and performances. I will go so far as to say that Kristie is the second most marketable performer in this year’s group. I know what kind of album she would make, what market to address with that album, and what marketing plan a studio executive would need to execute to get units sold. Overall, I think Kristie had the best women’s performance of the evening.

I am really glad that Carly changed up her wardrobe this week, and she looked great this evening. I thought her performance was better than the judges’ reactions and comments would indicate. The lukewarm judge reaction and the close-up of her husband will put her in the bottom three again this week, but I believe she will remain in the competition.

Brooke had the weakest performance of the evening. Brooke is talented, beautiful, and milquetoasty. She is in danger of elimination this week.

Syesha (also talented and beautiful, but plastic) put in her usual effort, which means that it is sung very well and completely without emotional connection to the song. Syesha will certainly be in the bottom two again. Either she or Brooke will be leaving us this week.
