Michael Johns is gone. Happy, America?

Here's my latest "Idol" column, which will be published in Saturday's newspaper. It discusses my thoughts on Michael Johns getting the boot. Soooo shouldn't have happened.

Nice eulogy.

As his "idol" career Rests In Peace, his real career may soon begin - fingers crossed.

Well, i am an aussie and a perth aussie at that. but jees apart from the other gorgeous boy dave cooke on idol there is nothing good to listen to or look at anymore. big thumbs down for american idol and the voters. dont think i will watch that show anymore. Ps: tried to sign up for the idol blogs on American idol but they kept rejecting every username i put up (even if it was a completely random name). is that another sign that AI is anti aussie or am i being paranoid. I will leave that for you to decide.

Michael lost out because American Idol is not a singing competition, a talent competition, or a beauty pageant. AI is a vote-getting competition, hardly different than politics. Michael Johns lost because the other boys were able to define themselves better for the voting public and because he was unwilling to fill the niche the judges wanted him to fill. Randy in particular gave Michael Johns good advice week after week, but Michael wanted to sing the songs he liked to sing instead of making song choices that would increase his vote totals.

The remaining “why doesn’t he/she do better with the Idol results” contestant, Carly, would do well the heed the “conservative” advice many folks (myself included) have offered her – cover up those tats. AI is a popularity competition, and the contestants present themselves as a package, including appearance. An absence of visible body ink will turn off no AI voter. Visible tattoos do have a negative on at least two important AI voting segments – grandmas and tweeners.

But when it really comes right down to it, Michael was not, and Carly will not “win” American Idol, even if AI were solely a talent or vocal competition. Neither of them have the best voice in the group, and neither of them are the most talented of the group. In the immortal words of Mystery Men’s the Sphinx, both of them “are number two, or lower.”
