May 9, 2008A few final thoughts from your guest bloggerSo, who do you think gets their dream smashed into a million pieces this week and who moves on to the finale? Hmm... I know I said last week I was sure Syesha Mercado was on her way out, but that was before Jason Castro destroyed two perfectly good songs. Can Mercado hold on one more week and displace one of the Davids? Unlikely, but she's come this far, and with the right song, who knows? I was listening to my iPod in my office today and heard the late, great Eva Cassidy's version of "People Get Ready" and thought that would be a great arrangement for Syesha. Do you ever do that? Hear a song and think, wow, I'll bet [insert name of favorite Idol contestant here] could bring down the house with that? Am I a real dork for admitting that I do that? Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens Tuesday. All three contestants get to tour their hometowns this weekend, which sounds nice but I am sure is actually jam-packed with work and completely exhausting and distracting. It's been a real pleasure blogging here this week, folks, but I must return to my dog blog now. Wendy's back next week. Peace out, readers! |

KennedyHas the winner been decided? Off the air developments this week may have tipped the results of this season's American Idol. Apparently the AI producers have had enough of Baby Elmo Archuletta’s dad’s stage-parent-from-hell act, and have banned Jeff Archuletta from the set (except he may sit in the audience during the performances). Details have been posted on TMZ and Drudgereport.
Keep in mind that the winner of AI signs a management contract with 19 Entertainment and a recording contract with a major label (in prior years, this was Clive Davis’ imprint J Record’s, but with Clive’s ouster as the head of BMG, this years’ contracting entity remains to be seen). While 19 Entertainment has made fantastic money on the contestants thus far, once the tour is done, the future earning potential of the AI winner is a risk.
This leads me to my favorite AI pastime: rank speculation. After the tour, 19 Entertainment and the record label are going to sink millions of dollars into one of these contestants hoping to garner a profit. And, since 19 Entertainment counts the votes themselves, it can easily choose the winner from among the top two or three performers.
By all counts, the two Davids are tipped to be the finalists. Syesha, while talented, is a limited performer who has consistently been in the bottom of the pack vote-total-wise, but has managed to survive to the final three. The exceptional talents of both Davids are plain to see.
So, 19 Entertainment can either choose to make in investment in a mature, intelligent, baggage-less David Cook who is of legal age and can sign his own contracts, or a young phenom not yet of legal age that comes with a stage parent from hell.
I say choose because of the fine print at the end of every AI results show. AI does not assert that the winner is the one who has the highest number of recorded votes. AI plainly and clearly reserves for itself the right to not count votes that AI “unfairly influence” the outcome of the voting. AI trots out no auditor to verify the vote totals – the count is entirely up to the AI producers.
And what can be more fair than for 19 Entertainment to choose the winner based on business considerations? AI is their show, their money, their franchise, and their golden ticket. These contestants are swimming in their wake.
From my vantage point, David Cook is a clearly preferable investment for 19 Entertainment and a major record label to make vis a vis David Archuletta. I think this week’s events have made that crystal clear. The future shall be played out as it will, but if I were betting my house on picking the winner, I’d ask myself the following question: Where is the smart money?

Julie A. : →http://www.google.comI have always believed that Syesha had the charisma and style to shine on American Idol. She is an incredibly talented singer. Although she has been in the bottom 3 and 2 a lot she has truly brought a lot to the Idol stage and I would not be surprised with 3 well sung songs if she landed in the top 2. Best of luck Syesha!

Amy Hanek : →http://www.houseonthegladehill.blogspot.comHave you all heard about baby David? His Dad was banned from the backstage area of the show. Also this week on the fourth Today show hour, Hoda and Kathy Lee gossiped with one of the judges from Star Search, (the mother Judd - can't think of her name). Apparently she still remembers David's father from his outbursts way back then.
