May 19, 2008For the Soul Patrol...Looks like Taylor Hicks is hitting the Broadway stage, too (Clay Aiken currently appears in Monty Python's "Spamalot"). According to Zap2it.com, Taylor Hicks will join the cast of "Grease" as "Teen Angel" at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City. So if you want to see Taylor this summer, you have to take a trip to NYC. May 5, 2008Producers not dumping Abdul
Sounds like the “American Idol” producers are sticking by Paula Abdul despite her verbal blunder last week when she delivered her critique of Jason Castro’s second song before he actually sang it.
Some have suggested the incident proves the show is rigged, the judges' comments are not spontaneous and the results are not based purely on votes. If I were the type to believe in conspiracy theories or brilliant marketing stunts, I might be tempted to wonder if perhaps Abdul’s foible was planned, intended to give America’s top show a little more publicity and perhaps a boost in its falling ratings. Personally, I don't think it's that complicated. I suspect there may be other reasons for Abdul’s embarrassing moment. She may actually be as ditzy as she seems. After all, it can be awfully difficult to accurately remember everything that happened in, oh let's say, the last 15 minutes. Blog reader Pete already believes there’s plenty of shenanigans going on and that “American Idol” is scripted and manipulated. Let’s hear what you think. Has any of this eroded your belief that the show is spontaneous and anything other than a real competition? (AP Photo/Evan Agostini, file) April 18, 2008Fantasia Barrino coming to Shenandoah
Looks like "Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino will be in the Shenandoah Valley on May 3. Fantasia will serve as the grand marshal of the upcoming Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. I've posted the full news brief here. April 10, 2008Phil Stacey to perform in Roanoke
It was just announced that former "Idol" contestant Phil Stacey (last season) will perform at this year's Festival in the Park. Stacey just released a new CD; his big hit is "If You Didn't Love Me." Festival in the Park kicks off Thursday, May 22. Stacey will perform Friday, May 23. April 7, 2008'Idol Gives Back' brings the star power"Idol Gives Back," which airs Wednesday, was taped Sunday night and apparently attracted some major star power, according to the AP. A-listers who showed up include Brad Pitt, Fergie, The Manning brothers, Reese Witherspoon, Jimmy Kimmel, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams. Some familiar faces appeared in pre-taped sessions, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain, Ellen Degeneres and Whoopi Goldberg. According to news reports, David Cook was taken to the hospital Tuesday night following the show because of heart palpitations. According to TMZ.com, "show medics said Cook's blood pressure was 'far too high' and urged the aspiring 'Idol' to seek treatment, but he did not want to leave until the show concluded." Following a dose of meds to bring down his blood pressure, he was released and is said to be doing fine. I guess all this excitement is really getting to him. March 20, 2008Ryan announces The MentorsThe Mentors have been announced. Let's run through them, briefly. Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Neil Diamond. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this mean the contestants will have to sing songs associated with the mentors? If so, the future doesn't look so bright. Imagine David Cook singing a song from a Broadway musical. Or Carly singing Dolly Parton's "9 to 5." Or KLC singing a Neil Diamond tune with a country twist. The one fit might be Ramiele and Mariah Carey, and that's solely based on their similar fashion choices, definitely not vocal talent. March 4, 2008Apparently, David does more than sing
Just read this news tidbit from Associated Press: "'American Idol' contestant David Hernandez once entertained audiences by removing his clothes instead of singing tunes, a manager at a male strip club in Phoenix told The Associated Press." February 26, 2008Skip all your plans"Idol" is back on tonight and will air three nights this week, so if you have any plans you better push them to Friday. That's what I have to do, anyway. Basically it's the same format as last week. The guys sing tonight, the girls tomorrow. Then on Thursday four of them will be kicked off. I'll be glad when they merge the two so our weeks aren't so consumed by product placement and fluffy filler segments. Speaking of filler, I found this story at USA Today that ties Britney Spears (do we need to use her last name anymore?) to three of this season's contestants. According to the story, "Robbie Carrico dated her. Kristy Lee Cook worked for her. Kady Malloy imitated her." Read on for more. February 8, 2008Can't make an audition? Head to DisneyI guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Disney has announced it's opening an "American Idol"-themed attraction at Disney World in Orlando later this year. According to the Orlando Business Journal, "The attraction will allow guests to participate in an American Idol contest. The audition process will be open to all park guests who register." I seriously think "Idol" could take over the world. Read more here. January 29, 2008Some newsy stuff
AP photo Clay Aiken recently told New York magazine that he's never been in a relationship and he's not interested in being in one, toying with the idea that he may be asexual. Thoughts? It was announced that Carrie Underwood will perform at the Grammys on Feb. 10. My guess is she'll sing "Before He Cheats." What do you think? Jordin Sparks is singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday. Phil Stacey has a CD coming out April 15. Will you buy it? |
