David Archuleta update

I just read an update on USA Today that David A. plans to do an up-tempo song tonight. Oh no. Remember what happened last week when he sang Chris Brown's "With You"? Of all nights, tonight is the night he needs to stick to what he does well, boring as it may be.

The Davids will perform three songs each tonight ... their choice. Should be a good watch.

Finale parties?

Is anyone having an "American Idol" finale party this week? Or have you heard of any places hosting an event? If so, let me know. You can e-mail me or post a comment.

Thanks!

Wendy is back

Well, I'm back from my whirlwind European vacation. It was a wonderful time and I feel completely rejuvenated. They didn't broadcast "American Idol" in Switzerland and Italy so I missed out on a few shows. I've recorded them on the DVR, but haven't had time to watch them yet. I hear Jason Castro really messed up big-time; I'm anxious to see the highlights on that one. And poor Brooke White is gone, too. I thought she'd make it over Syesha. What a surprise that Syesha is still in it. (I know y'all have already hashed through this stuff, just bear with me!)

Where they stand

Aside from Brooke White's major misstep (which broke my heart), I think tonight's performances were truly representative of each competitor's skill level.

Brooke: Not always consistent, but can bring you to tears when she nails it
David Archuleta: Talented voice, but never steps out of his comfort zone
David Cook: Solid every time and has incredible versatility and range
Carly Smithson: Has a very big voice, but picking the right songs is crucial
Jason Castro: A cutie and fun to listen to, but overall too weak vocally to continue
Syesha Mercado: Has a wonderful voice, but it's imperative she sings songs that mean something to her. Otherwise she's forgettable.

It's been a long day in Hokie Nation

You know, I joke a lot on this blog. Because to me, "American Idol" isn't real life. For most of us, it's a fun way to escape the reality of our own lives. I think most of you would agree.

But, today, my heart isn't really into "Idol." I spent the day at Virginia Tech, helping to gather and post news, during this first-year anniversary of the shootings, this day of remembrance. My heart is with the friends and families of the victims. And with the university. There was something bittersweet about being there.

Take a minute to check out all the vignettes, video and photographs from the day at Virginia Tech: One Year Later.

Thanks for reading.

Kristy Lee Cook calls Simon a 'butt,' and other randomness

I'm having fun with my random collection of thoughts, so I think I might keep doing it.

What's with Paula's outfit right now?? That flower?
Jason Castro's slitty eyes ... um, can we say 4:20, anybody?
David Cook's elf shoes
OK people, Carly has a fan base if the audience cheers are any indication. Take that, haters! (OK, it's looking like she might be in the bottom 3, though, but whatever.)
Kristy Lee Cook calls Simon a "butt." Classic.
The Ford commercial to the tune of Queen's "Break Free" was actually pretty good. The message, anyway. Not necessarily the Ford.
Why is it that during Elliott Yamin's performance that only the four contestants who were called onstage previously were allowed to watch him live? The others had to stand in the back.
I admit: I fast-forwarded during Mariah Carey's performance. Nice blogger, yes?
Mariah Carey's Fran Drescher-ish laugh during her interlude with Ryan.
The fact they cut out the show before KLC got to even finish her goodbye song.

Idle thoughts, starting with David Archuleta's pants

David Archuleta's bad leather pants. The pink "Hello Kitty" band-aid on Mariah Carey's hand. (Not sure if it was "Hello Kitty," technically, but it looked like it.) Is that a trend? Simon's weird comment about Brooke being a burger with no meat. Paula actually making sense for once. Just David Cook's hair in general. The way the audience cheers when Brooke White puts her shoe back on after playing the piano. Randy likening Jason Castro's performance to a "weird beach luau." Kristy Lee Cook's fake girlie hug with Mariah.

Randy Jackson to Syesha: "That's one of the toughest songs to sing, as well." How is that? Only one can be the toughest, Randy. Simon's awful sweater that looked like it came from Wal-Mart. David Archuleta sounding like Kermit the Frog when he was talking to the judges. Carly letting it fly to Ryan that she thinks her fellow competitors are boring (in not so many words, of course). Random flashes of Minnie Driver in the audience (maybe with Teri Hatcher?)

That is all. Add your own if you have any.

Tivo a must for 'Idol Gives Back'

It's really hard for me to sit through long, drawn-out shows like "Idol Gives Back," so I'm not really looking forward to watching tonight. Don't get me wrong, it's for a wonderful cause and I'm all for that. But sometimes the Hollywood hype is just too much. Raise the money, certainly, just don't make me watch all the junk ... like group sing.

I don't know how much I'll blog about this episode. It was taped on Sunday night so I'm sure it'll be presented to us as a big, shiny package with Miley Cyrus as the proverbial bow on top.

I keep reading conflicting news items on which of the past participants will grace the stage. Some say Chris Daughtry. Some say Kelly Clarkson. Some say Daughtry and Carrie Underwood. I guess we'll see. Whatever the case, this year's show is said to be "bigger and better" than ever, of course. Is that why we won't see former contestants like Ruben Studdard or Fantasia or Clay Aiken, or what about Justin Guarini? Where's he? I liked him.

Will Kristy Lee Cook go home?

There's a lot of talk on the Web about "Idol Gives Back," which airs Wednesday night. But, I'm more interested in tonight's show and who will go home Thursday night. Some people think the contestants will get immunity ("Survivor"-speak) this week, if last year's "Give Back" week is any indication. But I think someone will be axed.

My prediction? Kristy Lee Cook. Finally. I'm trying to think of what inspirational song she'll sing. What defines inspirational, anyway? I keep thinking of Van Halen's "Right Here, Right Now." Maybe she'll go for a three-fer with "Amazing Grace."

Who do you think is going home?

'American Idol' dominates my to-do list

"Idol" is a machine this week.

Not only do we get the 3.5 (thanks, John) 2.5-hour behemoth "Idol Gives Back" on Wednesday, but Tuesday night the eight remaining contestants will perform "inspirational" songs. And then on Thursday night someone is eliminated. It's me and the couch this week.

I guess I'll have to set the DVR to record my favorites, "The Office" and "Law & Order: SUV," which are back with new shows.

I'm going to print

Well, now that we're down to the final 12, the features editor at the paper has asked me to provide an Idol summary each week for the Friday Extra section. So, you guys comment away and I can add some of your remarks to the page. Should be fun!

My cousins are coming over Tuesday night to watch the show with me. I don't remember if you read the post about how they wanted to contribute the boys' point of view after the neighbor girls down the street came over and helped me recently. I'm gonna post their comments after the show, so keep an eye out. I know they'll have some interesting things to say, maybe even some things I can't post. :-)

Does anyone Twitter?

I set up Twitter instant messenger. Thought it might be fun to experiment tonight while watching the show. I'll Twitter my comments and they'll be live. But you have to subscribe to the feed by clicking here:

Just thought it might be fun to try it out. If you're not into it, cool, I'm still going to update on the blog, of course. But you should be into it. If you're on Twitter, find me at wmaxey.

How cute is this?

The other night I had the neighbor's kids help me blog about the women's performances. My two cousins, Trey and Shane, saw the blog and now they want to come over and offer feedback from the boys' point of view. How fun is that? Be on the lookout!

I'll post more comments tomorrow. My guess is it's 80s week? Hopefully someone will sing "Jessie's Girl."

Do you watch the show?

Are you watching the show this season? Would you be interested in contributing a blog entry? If so, send me an e-mail. Would love to hear from you.

If you just can't wait to find out

Spoilers are all over the Internet already. The top 24 contestants were revealed last week, and apparently the sources are credible. I won't list them here, but I'll give you the link. I looked at it, but truthfully I don't even remember some of the names on the list. And I wasn't surprised by the names I did recognize. So have at it if you just can't wait.

Why are Southerners so daggone loud?

Why do Southerners (and I'll say "we" because I am one) scream their songs? A lot of contestants from Charleston were so loud. Is it because a lot of Southerners grew up singing in church? It's OK to sing it loud and proud for Jesus, but not so much for Randy, Paula and Simon.

One screamer in particular was Aretha (named after THE Aretha...no pressure there) Codner. She shouted through a Whitney Houston song (strike one and two) and then proceeded to argue with the judges (strike three) that she was better than all the others, specifically the contestants who made it to Hollywood. The judges won out in the end and Aretha left. This is random, but when Aretha was leaving the room Paula asked "Is she married" to no one in particular. And there was no answer. It was weird.

Next up: San Diego, not Sanjaya

I just felt like bringing it all back...

Seriously? Quick thought...

I still have 15 minutes to go. And I took a lot of notes about this show. But, you know what? This show is kind of lame. Reality shows are getting old. Shows like "Dallas" and "Knot's Landing" made it longer than "American Idol." There's something to be said about that. It's easy to get over reality programs. We live there. It gets old and not very shocking after a while. That's where this "Idol" is going.

Quick thought

It really doesn't matter about the talent; as long as you're hot you have a case with Paula.
