FRANK BEAMER POST-GAME NEWS CONFERENCE FROM TECH’S 16-14 LOSS TO MIAMI ON THURSDAY NIGHT
FRANK BEAMER
Opening comments
We got in here and needed to run the ball better. It goes back to that they played extremely well. I think the story of game was field position in the third quarter. It all started with our kickoff return and not getting the ball further back up the field. I think we only had the ball six plays in the third quarter. And it’s hard to beat a good fb team when you only got the ball six plays in a whole quarter.
I’m proud of our fb team. I thought our defense … we played that whole third quarter on our side of the field and our defense kept battling. Got the ball out of there on a third down (on Macho Harris strip of UM receiver Aldarious Johnson), and, daggone, if they don’t pick it up and take it to the 2 [yard line].
But we never gave in. And our offense, I don’t think we never gave in. We’re battling there at the end and go in for a score, and then get the ball back and had a chance to win it there in the last series.
We’ve got to go home and take care of business, try to get to eight wins, which is going to be tough to do. I know there is one … I think that Maryland would have to beat North Carolina [on Saturday] and Georgia Tech would have to beat Miami [Nov. 22]. I think that would put us back in it, so there’s still a possiblity there. But certainly that’s up to somebody else. Proud of the way we hung in there, but it’s a tough loss.
The game was right there at halftime (7-7), it’s right there, and we played the whole third quarter on our side of the field with six plays, and that’s tough. We had awful field position and they had great field position. And we held them to nine points, and we played the whole third quarter on our side of the field. I thought we did great (defensively).
ANYTHING THEY DID DIFFERENT IN SECOND HALF
I think field position. [Their] kickoff  coverage … we started out on our 10 (actually 9-yard line), and that’s hard. They’re flying to the ball good, doni’t get me wrong, defensively they were flying to the ball good.
ON DUSTIN PICKLE BEING IN, NOT DARREN EVANS ON LAST DRIVE [WHEN TECH HAD THIRD-AND-2 AT OWN 40, PICKLE WS STOPPED FOR LOSS OF 1 YARD ON RUSH]
       Pickle is our 2-minute back.
ON EVANS BEING SLOWED COMING OFF BIG WEEK
They’re a little quicker than last week (Marylan’ds defense) and we didn’t get ‘em blocked as well as last week. That’s the bottom line.
WAY GLENNON PLAYED FIRST HALF, WHY DID YOU GO MAINLY WITH TYROD IN SECOND
Well, I thought we had some success with Tyrod, pulling the ball down and running … and scored twice. I feel like he was giving up something at that point and time. You know they are laying their ears back at Glennon and rushing. I think [Taylor] can get away from them at some point.
HOW TOUGH WAS DYRELL ROBERTS’ BIG DROP ON DEEP PASS BY TAYLOR
How tough? He tried hard but he just didn’t make the catch. I thought it was a pretty good throw.
ON BUD’S SITUATION
Yeah, he’s going to meet with Clemson. I believe it’s tomorrow [Friday]. I just told our people in there [locker room] to wish him well, he’s done a great job for us and he deserves the opportunity.
Late night here and will be back with update later today.

Tech has a good team. But Miami just has more overall talent.
As good a runner as Tyrod Taylor is, they could run him or Evans on almost every offensive play.

  2. Disgusted Hokie | November 14, 2008 at 7:06 am

Frank Beamer is an idiot. I’m so sick of hearing this type of post game comment. Everyone played hard, they were just better, few more of this or that and we’re in it Blah, blah, blah. How about “We stunk up the field as a coaching staff. Made the biggest bone-head decisions at criticals times. We need a complete coaching overhaul!” When I hear that, I know we’re making progress.

  3. bigmon | November 14, 2008 at 7:36 am

If Bud leaves and Stiney stays with his pathetic offensive play calling, we will only slip further into mediocrity. D is the only unit that looks like they are being coached. It will be a severe tragedy when he leaves but what will hurt most is what we will be left with. Stinespring needs the boot and you can send O’Cain with him as well. They are “out of whack” here.

Oh and in the outside chance that a shakedown does occur, please do not hire the next set based on the good buddy standard. We need accountability.

  4. WhoKnows? | November 14, 2008 at 7:44 am

I don’t understand our offensive philosophy. When we find a formula that works it seems like we do all we can to abandon those principles. I think that miami played harder than we did last night and may have had more athletes overall, but we still had opportunities to win the football game. It was just like the Kansas game last year. We we hugely successful running Brandon Ore up the middle during the first half, but we abandoned that totally in the second half when we had plenty of time to run the ball and establish something. I love coach Beamer and my hat is off to him for all he has accomplished over the years, but why he blatantly continues to get “cute” with his playcalling I will never know. Selfishly I hope Bud Foster doesn’t get the Clemson job because our football team would be in a world of hurt without our stellar defense. Hats off to that squad for playing their hearts out last night. Someone else deserves to go to the ACC Championship because the Hokies are sure to get outcoached against BC, FSU, or Wake.

Hokies would hate to lose Coach Foster but he deserves a head coaching job. The best thing Tech could do is to put it in his contract that he will be the next VT head coach when Coach Beamer retires. Also pay him more money now.

  7. charlie | November 14, 2008 at 8:54 am

You know, maybe a change in the coach line up would be good for tech. Dont get me wrong,Bud has done a gteat job,but he has paid his dues and should get a shot at the next step.Things cant stay the same forever and one of these days we are going to wake up and Frank will be gone.Change in this case may be for the better,it may open some eyes and make way for other changes that will come along.I wish you well Bud if you become head coach. You will be tough, you had a great teacher.

  8. John | November 14, 2008 at 8:55 am

He should have never pulled Glennon. It was like watching the BC game all over again when you need to at least have a threat of a QB that can throw. I kept hoping in the BC game he would put in Glennon because Tyrod was not hitting the broad side of a barn (of course after the game the coaches said it was a hitch in his throw….nothing like admitting to all of your opponents that your QB can not throw).

Hey Frank and Stinespring, what about the personal foul Tyrod got for hot dogging. Is that not coaching 101. If there is one flag not to get that should be the one since the NCAA has told people over and over not to do it. Hey, I have a good idea….let’s keep playing him so he nor his family will get upset. Who is the coach here.

Then we talk about field position in the 3rd qtr and us backed up deep….what do we do…put Tyrod in so they know they can come all out and pin us deep as they know Tyrod has a hitch in his throw.

Also, put the horse Evans in there and do not go with Pickle. Can Steinspring go to Clemson and we keep Foster? I mean come on….I could tell what we plays and where we were going to run (but I did not even guess we would use Pickle)…..in case you have not guessed it is up the middle no matter if we had success off the left side and outside, we would run middle right and then when the defense knew we could not throw with Taylor in there it did not matter where we ran.

I know we are young but a lot of this is on the coaches….especially Stinespring. I think the caller to the call in show had it right. We are not going to win a national title with the play calling and without putting in a QB that can throw the ball so that we can at least make the defenses think we can throw.

  9. Blacksburg Local | November 14, 2008 at 8:55 am

Foster. Virginian for Class. Bud, good luck with the Clemson Job, you have EARNED the opportunity. It truly is a win-win situation. You will do great things for Clemson, and Jim Weaver will realize that a VAST majority of fans that begrudginly fork over close to $50.00 a ticket, do so to see your defense. Not Bryan Stillemployed.(WHY) Not hating on Bryan, he is a great guy. Personality is one thing, Performance is another. Ticket prices will fall back to below $20.00, (if they are worth that), and maybe, just maybe I can finally afford a shirt at the Tech Bookstore.

ON DUSTIN PICKLE BEING IN, NOT DARREN EVANS ON LAST DRIVE [WHEN TECH HAD THIRD-AND-2 AT OWN 40, PICKLE WS STOPPED FOR LOSS OF 1 YARD ON RUSH]
    Pickle is our 2-minute back.

GREAT EXPLANATION!!! That’s just garbage. Pickle’s what, our 4th string running back behind Evans, Oglesby, and a healthy Lewis? Why is a 4th string running back our 2 minute back??? How does this make any sense? Why aren’t more people upset by this fact? Did Pickle even play in the Maryland game? Why put someone in cold off the bench who hasn’t played a snap in several games in arguably the most critical stretch in any game? Why didn’t the coaches hand the ball (or pass the ball) to Evans more in the second half of both the Miami game and the FSU game? This just seems like common sense to me. What am I missing? Is anyone accountable? Please fire Stinespring.

  11. Golfman2 | November 14, 2008 at 9:25 am

I think Glennon deserved the opportunity to win that game last night. He played well against Maryland and he should have played more. I think also we are holding to much hope out for tyrod as being the new Micheal Vick. Mike took us to the National Championship his freshman year. Tyrod’s a good guy but he doesn’t have the abilities that Vick had or the durability. I hope Glennon goes to the pro’s and does very well because I don’t think he has not gotten a fair shake at Tech. He should have been in there the whole second half. What happened to Boone last night and the Wild Turkey formation. Boone needed to also be more involved. Stinespring showed creativity last week but come on! The Bright spot, the receivers are growing up.

  12. Watcher | November 14, 2008 at 9:30 am

Taylor is a great football player but not a major college QB. His height deficience is too much to overcome- he flat out cannot see the field well enough from the pocket. Great to watch and exciting. But he costs as much as he gives at the QB position. Am really concerned about next year.

  13. gdmarz | November 14, 2008 at 10:22 am

The Hokies need to keep Foster by promising him a “Jimbo Fisher” type deal. He deserves it and without him and his defense we would have seen far fewer bowl games over the years. If Foster is offered a deal by Clemson (which he merits) he would have to take it without some guarantee by Tech.

This just proves that one game against Maryland does not an offense make. The OC and offensive line coach need to be replaced. With this offense no one should think that wins at either Duke or UVA will be a given.

  14. Mike | November 14, 2008 at 10:30 am

I thought they should have had Glennon in there more in the 2nd half also, but near the end of the game, we needed Tyrod’s legs to get out of their pressure. Glennon’s last sack took us out of FG range and cost the game. Tyrod had a perfect throw but the receiver dropped it. If that’s going to happen, then you don’t need Glennon anyway.

The MD game was interesting – lots of different looks. Where was that last night?

Short passes to Evans worked to get him out of the middle – when they decided to throw to him. But the reason we only had 6 snaps in Q3 was because they kept trying to run him up the middle where there were no holes (all night).

Beamer had it right – Miami isn’t Maryland. So, when you have a fast D you need to do a lot of misdirection and get them to overrun the play.

I don’t think Bud will be offered a job at Clemson, but if he goes, it might be the best thing that has happened to VT for a long time. We will have to get some sort of offensive scheme going and not just rely on the D all the time.

Having said all that, you gotta hand it to Miami – they have about the same number of freshmen that we do and they are FAST! They are going to be awesome in a couple of years when they figure out how to play football. They recruit from a better talent pool that we do, and they are well coached. The announcers said that Miami currently has 37 players on NFL teams!

I don’t think FSU will be back until a couple of years after Bobby retires, but Miami is on the way now.

By the way, could ESPN have been more in the tank for Miami? I had to turn the sound off my tv.

  15. Don | November 14, 2008 at 10:37 am

We spent 3 quarters trying to establish a running game that wasn’t there. Why wait till the 4th quarter to THROW THE BALL!!!!

  16. Kenny | November 14, 2008 at 10:46 am

There are two problems here, the offensive line and Stinesspring. If the starting five can’t get the job done, then put in five that will. The play calling has been an issue since Stinesspring has been the offensive coordinator. Will someone please explain to me why on short yardage plays we consistantly run a single back or shotgun formation? Given the weakness of the offensive line, I believe using a fullback to lead the halfback or play action is basic football. This team can’t do fancy, just play basic football until the line decides to do their job.

  17. Frank | November 14, 2008 at 10:48 am

A national championship is what we all want. A good solid season is the first thing. This is 11 or 12 wins in the regular season and a bowl win to finish the season. Then a good recruiting year,5,6, or 7 5 and 4 star rated players every year. Then year after year a solid season. There are too many ups and downs during the year every year. Let’s get solid, year after year, then go from there. It starts with better recruits, if we can get them, that is a big question. Until it is solved we will have more of the same every year. Better players is the answer.

  18. Goodbye democracy | November 14, 2008 at 11:07 am

If Foster leaves for Clemson, then the worthless athletic director and beamer should go with him.

Foster is the future of VT. While they give year after to year to the pathetic joke that is Stinespring, Foster puts a good product on the field each year.

I’d leave if I was Foster. Beamer and Stiney need to hit the road. Frank can’t win a big game and Stiney took 4 great receivers and wasted them. Want proof? Look at Eddie Royal in Denver. Everyone but Stinespring knew the potential of those receivers.

Another problem for Tech is Tyrod is a joke. He can’t throw. Tech still wants Vick. He’s gone and he’s not coming back. Start recruiting drop back passers and get away from these guys who can only run.

  19. Dave | November 14, 2008 at 11:19 am

Does not anyone else believe we lost the game on our first possession? Took the kickoff and drove it down to their twenty. Instead of taking the 3 points by kicking a field goal we go for it on forth down. Stupid coaching. Always take the points. If we had, final score 17-16 in our favor.

  20. Steve | November 14, 2008 at 11:26 am

Two changes need to be made. Whoever is calling the plays and whoever is recruiting the offensive linemen need to go. Every year the defense plays great and the offense sputters. I agree with the others. Commit to Coach Foster to be the next head coach. What a great job he has done. Encourage Clemson to take Steinspring. And quit making excuses about playing young guys. Look at who Miami and Florida State are playing.

  21. WhoKnows? | November 14, 2008 at 12:10 pm

I agree with everything that is mentioned above. Getting better players is definitely key to being a solid contender year after year. The thing is, nearly every team we play our talent level puts us in a position to be competitive and win (the exception being LSU last year). It’s as if our coaches don’t have to ability to recognize when things are or aren’t working and making decisions and adjustments accordingly. Last night for instance with the exception of Tyrod, there was nothing doing up the middle. Evans got stuffed up the gut repeatedly, but the few times we ran to the outside or the option those plays went for positive yardage. I know running keeps defenses honest, but I don’t understand the philosophy of wasting a play by running up the center’s back and getting stuffed. Some games it works, some it doesn’t. It is up to the coaching staff to recognize and make adjustments. Stinespring can’t do what is needed to make a good team great. We would be much better off if he was just coaching a position and recruiting. Maybe Tommy Bowden would like to come coach some offense?!

    WE NEED SOME CHANGES!!!!!

  23. Greg | November 14, 2008 at 2:02 pm

NAME BUD FOSTER HEADCOACH IN WAITING NOW!!!! We can’t afford to lose Bud.

  24. louisiana hokie alum | November 14, 2008 at 2:26 pm

must agree that tech needs to recruit better o-line, or at least play walk ons who have more heart than the 2 star recruits playing now…play calling is a joke, but beamer has a mentality from 1940 and loyalty and all that stuff that should not be in the business arena; esp in the BCS empire, but he is the king of SW VA, so he isnt going anywhere anytime soon, so we must learn to live with it.

tyrod is the only reason we had a chance last night, how can people write that glennon should have stayed in!! glennon is the worse qb to be at tech this past decade! his record as a starter proves it! i can not wait till these last two or three games are over and his vt career is done! if it wasnt for a miraculous catch by a freshman receiver, he would have had like 45 yds passing and -40 yards rushing bc all he does is take crucial sacks!! his whole career he has never learned not to take a sack…how many years will it take for him to realize that his oline sucks, and he cant get sacked in crucial situations! the guy is 23 years old playing against 18 yr old miami freshmen!!!

tyrod will have 2 years with a great rb and experienced receivers! also the field goal kicker, does anyone notice he cant make anything over 45 yds! i mean i know a 50 yd field goal in perfect conditions like last night is extremely hard, but this is Virginia Tech!! recruit a kicker who can make those!!! there are plenty of kickers that can nail those in perfect conditions…keys doesnt come close to anything over 45 yds!! also am i the only person to think the roberts is running in slow motion when he catches kickoffs? put macho in or coale, or tyrod in for kickoffs! esp if your gonna play glennon at qb!

the defense is in good shape whether or not foster leaves! he has built a program that is bigger than one coach! and the defense is actually going to be scary the next few years with the talent coming through the pipelines thanks to foster, but it will be just as good without him, at least for a few years!!!

  25. mike | November 14, 2008 at 2:59 pm

What about the so call roughing the passer flag on Martin?

  26. John | November 14, 2008 at 3:58 pm

I agree with much that has been already said above. This email is meant to reinforce the need for Bud Foster. He should be offered more money and a commitment to take over the head coaching job when Frank decides to call it quits. He has proven through performance that he is a great coach and should be retained at all costs.

  27. Brad | November 14, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Season ticket holders and boosters unite! If common sense and doing what’s best for the team aren’t big enough reasons to replace our inept offensive coordinator then hopefully a major decline in football revenues will do the trick. Stop donating and stop going to games. We’re going to have to hit Weaver the only place that hurts him, his pocketbook.

Seriously, Frank. I love everything you’ve done for Virginia Tech. But start taking some responsibility for some of this poor decision making. Our losses this year are not due to the other teams being more athletic, they’re the result of the other teams havings better coaches. Pointing your finger at our student athletes every time something goes wrong is unacceptable. You sir, should be ashamed of yourself.

  28. Frank | November 14, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Any Hokie who watches rivals.com can see the names of the best recruits in the nation. Tech is mentioned in the list for many of them. The question remains why can’t we get them to Tech? This needs an ANSWER,NOW!!! Write an article on why Tech can not get these players. Tech fans can judge a recruiting class for themselves, we have seen enough of them come and go. Let’s look at this class and the possibilities of it. 4 star qb, Kevin Newsome, 5 star ol Morgan Moses both from Va.. Bobby Massie from last year, will he return? He is a Va. player. Leon Mackey from last year, will he return? DE Jaason Ankrah , Duane Chisolm, Lanford Collins, Will Hill,Jamil Merrell, all list Tech, how many will we get? LB Jelani Jenkins and Dan Mason also list Tech, will we get them? These 2 star players and marginal recruits are not what we need to get where we want to be. Better recruits on defense with Coach Foster and look where we could go. Offensive players would be questionable because of the coaching, but if they came to Tech maybe they would be good enough to make up for a lack of good coaching. Let’s all Hokies watch and see where recruiting goes from here. That will tell a lot about the future of our program. Recruiting better pick up the pace fast, other schools are getting their share and more, we had better get ours. It is critical!!! Go Hokies!!!

  29. Carleton | November 14, 2008 at 4:43 pm

If Bud Foster leaves, we are done. I have no confidence in the offense. Frankly, Miami’s freshman are ridiculous. I don’t know how the coach turned the program around that quick. I didn’t see much of their offense, but I am afraid of what we will have to face from them for the next few years. Fast is an understatement.

  30. Bob | November 14, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Let’s remember Tyrod did not have the advantage of a redshirt year! He did not have Rogers as a QB Coach! He has no experienced Receivers! We still have an apprentice Offensive Coordinator! A questionable Offensive Line Coach! He doesn’t have the Luxury of good blocking thus he really does not have the time.

Why would any 5 star Wide Receiver want to come to Tech! The “O” Coordinator nor the “O” Line Coach has much of a reputation!!! In fact they STINK. We are not known as a passing team – Just think what Texas Tech could have done with the four receivers we had last year!!!!!

Take the Defense – They want to play for Coach Foster because he is surely considered among the best in the business. That’s why we can always play great “D”. By the way we also have some very good Coaches under Coach Foster – A very SOLID Group.

    My thoughts:

Recruit more out of State players! 8 or 9 in State players should be enough if we get the upper crust. I know we have had some problems in Florida but that is where you get your speed – Several other ACC (other than Miami and Florida State) have been successful – We have had some good ones in past years! Let’s just not quit completely!

Make the necessary Coaching changes on the “O” side of the ball. Get an experience Offensive Coach! Stine did well with the line before taking his current “LONG TIME Apprentice” Coaching job!

Mr. Weaver and Coach Beamer, “What ever it takes, what ever it cost, KEEP COACH FOSTER”

  31. Frank | November 14, 2008 at 11:33 pm

A lot of Hokies see the same thing as these comments show. We can not all be wrong, we are correct, someone who can do something about this needs to pay attention to us!!! Go Hokies!!!

  32. Stluciecane | November 14, 2008 at 11:53 pm

I had no idea, you guys felt like this about the offensive (Beamer)coaches. I have always held Beamer in high regard.

  33. Matt | November 15, 2008 at 12:08 am

Where’s the coaching accountability? With the exception of the Defense, neither Steinspring or Beamer are putting a quality product on the field. The play calling is horrible, and apparently Steinspring doesn’t know how to utilize the talent that we have. Change is good, Foster for head coach and Beamer and Steinpring should step down. Beamer has done tremendous things for Tech, but the game seems to be passing him by; we are being outcoached in critical situations. Our players are not at fault, they are playing hard. Why can’t the offense and special teams coordinators put a quality team on the field like Bud Foster has done with the young players that he has on defense? The excuse that we have a young team is lame!!

  34. WillyHokie | November 15, 2008 at 12:28 am

Offer Bud head coach job at VT right now. Offer Frank Defensive Coordinator job at VT right now. Stinespring will then be history in 30 minutes, and we will finally get the recruiting going to get a viable OC. Nuff said.

  35. Robert Eckert | November 15, 2008 at 12:40 am

WOW ! Tons of great comments on this sports web page.
Sorry to say that I gave up on Frank Beamer years ago.
The myriad of lop-sided bowl losses to Tennessee, Nebraska, North Carolina, Florida State (2), California, Auburn, Georgia & Kansas
have turned me into a Beamer disbeliever, FOREVER. I guess only
Dave Braine would have the ability to come back (Ha) and make changes
to this horrible football coaching staff and that is just a ‘dream’.

  36. Donna | November 15, 2008 at 7:43 am

If Jim Weaver has a brain in his head (and notice I said IF) he will do whatever it takes to keep Bud Foster because right now that is all we have as far as coaches go. The play calling in the Miami game for the offense was beyond description If Brian had any pride at all he would step down immediately as the offensive coach but with Coach Beamer making excuse after excuse why should he.

Sad is the only word I can think of (or at least put in print) for what is allowed to happen with this football team. IT IS NOT the players fault but the coaching and play calling.

Do everyone a favor and find another job Brian.

  37. Frank | November 15, 2008 at 8:03 am

MORE GOOD COMMENTS___ BEAMER SITUATION Everyone is right again!! It is very possible that Beamer has taken us as far as he can. Each year is the same old same old, ups and downs, with the downs being losses that should not have happened. This is every year, is this what it is going to be always from now on? It looks like it, things never change. It is already old with us as fans. It is very possible that he has taken us as far as he can. And what we have is what it is. The bad thing is it could be better. He and certain coaches had better get it in gear and step it up because others are doing so and if they pass us by we will not catch up to them again like we do now. FSU and Miami are not going to stay where they are now for very long and when they get it going again they will pass by us on a fast track and we will not catch up with the present attitude of coaching and recruiting. There are too many 2 star recruits and marginal recruits in the program. When year after year walk-ons do better than recruits that says a lot, too much! Recruit outside the state of Va. more. Go after good players whereever they are. Florida is a good place to try to recruit. N.C. State, West Virginia, and Louisville are examples of schools that have players from Fla. on their team, why not us? It appears that we have quit trying to recruit there. North Carolina is another ACC team that is getting ready to pass us by. NC has a good coach with a great reputation for success and he will get it done at NC. It is possible that Beamer has done all that he can for us and if so it would look bad in one way of thinking to kick him out but we can not let these teams pass ua by, we will not catch up and go to heights that we want to reach. This is a critical situation and it is becoming more apparent every year. Somebody had better do something!!! NOW!!! Go Hokies!!!

  38. Sunsetryder | November 15, 2008 at 10:03 am

    1. Boone – One pass and one reception. Went from one game(MD) where he was the “MAN” to a game of obscurity -again(Miami). (Beamer) plays the youth and inexperience card week after week and loss after loss, but fails to utilize the experience that he DOES have on the field (Steinspring).
    2. Does a VT QB have to be a 6th year senior to learn to get rid of the ball when nothing is open? They have the sack part down pretty good and it is time to acquire another skill (Cain).

  39. Danny Cornett | November 15, 2008 at 10:04 am

I don’t hear anyone saying a word about going for the first down inside the 20 yard line of Miami in the first quarter, when a field goal is the much better choice in that situation.3 points would have resulted in a win for the hokies.I agree Stinespring is a dunce he needs to be gone and in a hurry, losing Foster would be devastating.

As if the game (Miami vs. Tech) was not frustrating enough, the sportscasters seemed more interested in entertaining each other and talking about Ring of Honors, past players, future games, old players, etc., than in calling the plays. We missed the beginning of several plays because of commercial breaks which is inexcusable. The blimp pictures were useless — who could make out players who looked like ants on our TV’s at the beginning of several plays? The players on the field and the TV audience deserved better coverage. As to the playing in general, the team looked lackluster as did the coaches and players when the cameras panned in on them. Where was the energy and enthusiasm on the sidelines? Where was the adrenalin and “pumping up” of the players? The plays that produced the penalties — where did those refs come from? Why is Tyrod “tripping” on himself and not thinking about his gestures and actions and how they affect his team? The Hokies beat themselves. Hopefully, Bud Foster will not leave. He is the glue of the team. Come on, Tech, offer him some incentive to stay!

Some of these comments I’m reading disgust me. You guys are not true Hokie fans. How about supporting your team when they need it? They lost their top 4 WRs from last year, their top 2 this year, their top RB, several stars on defense, several special teams stars, and you expect smooth sailing this year? Geez, guys. VT has had an unbelievable, 27-5, four year run in the ACC. One hiccup in 5 years should be allowed. For those of you that continue to get on the offense, you simply do not understand VT football. VT’s defense will always be ahead of their offense. That’s their style of play. That’s what helps them get solid defensive recruits. They have an identity. It’s been successful for years, and it’s not about to change because of one 4 loss season from the youngest VT team ever.

VT has one of the best coaching staffs in college football. The criticism is not justified. I don’t care what the stats say. VT is built to win close games. They don’t always do it, but they certainly do this more often than not. Coach Beamer would be thrilled to win every game 20-17 with 250-300 yards of offense. VT’s style of offense supports their defense. Because of this, the offensive stats will be bad, and the defensive stats will be good, no matter how these sides of the ball play. People don’t realize that an up and down, hurry up offense would get more yards on offense, but would also lead to more possessions for the other team’s offense, resulting in worse stats for the VT defense. Coach Beamer has no desire to try to win games 38-35. If you don’t like it, go support someone else, and miss out on what might be special years in the near future.

Let’s review those 6 3rd quarter plays that are causing some of you to get on the OC:

After a 5 minute Miami FG drive, VT takes over on their own 9 with about 10:00 left in the 3rd quarter.

1st and 10 on VT 9: Taylor sacked for (-1).
2nd and 11 on VT 8: Evans for 1 yard.
3rd and 10 on VT 9: Taylor sacked for (-5).

The run wasn’t working in the first half, so VT tried to establish the pass on its previous drive. Taylor got sacked twice, so maybe on our next possession we had better try to run this ball at least a little bit to slow down the Miami pass rush. After another Miami FG drive, VT starts at its own 16 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and VT has run 3 plays, yet the offense gets all the blame? Interesting.

1st and 10 on VT 16: Evans for 1 yard.
2nd and 9 on VT 17: Evans for 1 yard.
3rd and 8 on VT 18: Glennon sacked for (-8).

So, 6 plays and VT got 3 one yard runs from Evans and suffered 3 sacks. Now, you tell me what any OC could have done differently there? And, the defense is young and played their hearts out, but how about getting off the field and giving the offense more possessions and some field position during the 2nd half? 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and VT has had only 3 plays? Yet, the defense gets another free pass here? Bud has done another great job with that young defense, but let’s be fair here. They allowed long drives and FGs in that disastrous 3rd quarter, which resulted in VT having only 6 plays and starting on their 9 and 16. VT wins as a team, and they lose as a team. The offense, defense, and special teams were all a part of losing this game, not just the offense. But, people that don’t understand VT football, will of course, continue to think it’s always the offense’s fault.

The 3rd and 2 play to Pickle? Had that gotten the first down, no one would be complaining. Well, yes you would because that’s what you do. Some of you act like a pass or roll out would have been an automatic first down there. Miami’s defense was playing great, so it was not an easy call there. I’m guilty here. I was hoping for a run there to move the chains. It was 3rd and 2 with plenty of time left, and, yes, VT ran the ball. There’s not a thing wrong with that. It’s the same story with some of you: one week we threw it too much, the next week we ran it too much. No matter who you want to criticize, I just wish you were true Hokie fans. True fans would appreciate what has been an incredible run here, and a future that looks very bright.

What was the logic on changing quarterbacks after only one play…and thereafter several times in a series? How can you establish any continuity? Where was all the Enthusiam out in Miami…we played like it really didn’t matter? The only enthusiam comes from Coach Foster…Beamer looked like he was lost, as usual, does his headset work?

  43. Phil Humphries | November 15, 2008 at 11:52 am

The Hokies will never be the team they should be as long as Stinespring is the offensive coordinator. Just look around the country at all the creative OCs that make the most of the talent they have to work with.

How many times in the past have we seen a better player riding the pine
while another is on the field,(Druckenmiller, Randall, etc.)?
I have questioned the decision making process for a long time.
1st qtr. elect to go for it and not take the points. Go to the
bowl game 5 or 6 days early so the players can get distracted.
Let Keven Rodgers go, keep Stinespring. Even while Rodgers was
there continue to let Sinespring call the plays.
If Beamer lets Foster get away this will be another decision that
will come back to haunt him.
Cory Holt runs better than Glennon and throws better than Taylor
yet he just rides the pine.
Beamer will probably decide to stay another year at VT, another
    bad decision.

I take exception to Pete’s comments. Don’t question whether I am a true Hokie fan or not. My opinion is the OC must go. Frank and Foster have brought us an incredible distance. They are both wonderful coaches. Have you considered that perhaps a team that is 90% defense will not get it done? If you have a defense that can stop an opponent 90% of the time, yet 20% of the defenses out there can stop your offense 95% of the time, you are not going to make it to a national championship very often. VT had been to a NC once. That offense played well due to the freak of nature that is Mike Vick and in spite of Ricky Bustle. What frustrates me is that we find something that works against a particular defense. Then we go back to run up the gut when it hasn’t worked against the defense being played. When run up the gut works – great- fine – do it. When it doesn’t, it is as if the OC hopes that it will mysteriously start to work. I realize that opposing coordinators make adjustments – however, it seems like Stiney tries to react to adjustments that the opposing DC has not yet made – anticipating if you will. WHen he does this, he defaults back to running the ball up the middle. To run the ball up the middle, the OL has to create holes. I see the following as possible problems. I say possible – because I am NOT a professional. I see an issue with overall OL talent level. I see an issue with the adaptive abilities of the OC. I see an issue with the OL coach. I see an issue with loyalty past a certain point. Stiney has had 8 years. I have read Frank’s defense of Stiney with all the stats. Well guess what, a lot of that has come against weaker teams. A lot of that was set up by the defense demoralizing the other team. But let’s give Stiney the benefit…OK – He got us this far. He has been this good. He has peaked. He is at his limits. We need a dynamic OC in there that will also challenge Frank to grow further himself. I think Frank has more in him. I think perhaps he has become complacent. I mean if you are so sure about your job and so comfortable, where is the incentive to improve, to push yourself?

Bud Foster is one impressive coach. He has taken a group that was very lacking and has rapidly brought them along. Whatever methods he uses – work. He is also one of the most agile coaches I have seen as far as adapting to an opponent’s strategy. We need that agility and ability level at the OC position. I kind of wish Ralph would get canned up at Maryland, so maybe Frank would offer him the OC spot. I think he would be a superior OC for us. Of course, if he wasn’t, we would NEVER get rid of him.

Thanks Pete for speaking up. Most of the nonsense in these comments is shameful. Where have you people coached??? What makes you experts?? Have some of you even played organized football before? Some of you have probably coached sandlot ball and think making 7 year olds cry is how you coach. Grow up. If you want to drop your seasons tickets, fine, drop them. Cut off your nose to spite your face. I support Va. Tech and Coach Beamer and if he says Stinespring is the OC then I’m behind him.

Frank Beamer has done more for Va. Tech (I mean the entire University) and Blacksburg than anyone else in history. Student applications are sky high compared to the pre-Beamer era and it is directly related to the success of the football program. Average freshman SAT scores are higher. When I went to Tech in the 70′s, anybody could get in. Now that is not the case. The new highways in Blacksburg that have brought an industrial boom to the area would not have been built if not for the success of Va. Tech football. And some of you idiots want to say “Get the h*ll out of Frank, you lost a couple of games.”

Luckily, even though you are a majority on the msg boards you are a small part of the true Hokie Nation. It’s black and white. You either support Va. Tech football or you don’t.

  47. Matt | November 17, 2008 at 1:13 pm

The comments from Pete and Justafan are shameful. It is every Hokies right as a fan to expect better than what has been put on the field. What is wrong with questioning coaching? Especially if fans are seeing a consistent pattern in the coaching, nothing at all, it is their right as a fan who pays to see the Hokies play. We as fans of the Hokies expect the football program to maintain a certain level of performance and when that level is not met we are going to complain especially when the perception is that it is not a personnel problem but a coaching problem. I am still a Hokie fan and always will be. I will go to the games and stay whether we are winning by a lot or losing by a lot. I come to support the players, who are the only true losers of poor coaching. All us fans want to see is the talent that we have utilized to the maximum, showcase the talent that the Hokie players have and that comes down to coaching and when it seems only one coordinator is doing a tremendous job, fans will question the other major coordinators efforts.

Thank you Matt on Nov. 17,2008 at 1:13p.m.. We have every right to speak up and say what numerous others know also. This is not a situation where anyone can look the other way and pretend that it does not exist. Good job Matt!!

  50. Justafan | November 17, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Matt, Fernando and Frank, I never said people did not have the right to question calls and decisions. I do myself, but also realize that Coaches Beamer and Stinespring know much more about football than I do. I never said they didn’t have the right to forfeit their seasons tickets. They do. But, when the Hokies improve and they want to reorder, their seats won’t be as good. No one answered my question. What makes the people who want the coaches to lose their jobs experts? I don’t know your professions, but let’s say you were lawyers or police officers. Would an insurance salesman or an auto mechanic have the expertise to judge whether you were able to do your job efficiently? If the internet had been around in the 80′s, think about the uproar we would have heard after Coach Beamer’s first 5 or 6 years. People like those commenting on this page would have wanted his head on a spike. Fortunately, he was given the opportunity to prove himself and we have enjoyed the success we have had in recent years. The complainers are spoiled, they don’t remember the lean years older Hokie fans have been through. Patience is a wonderful thing.

The Hokies will come back. It will be due to the hard work of the players and coaches, not the b*tchers and moaners on the internet.
