UVa gets commitment
Mason Thomas, a defensive back from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, made an oral commitment to Virginia today.
Thomas had committed to Division I-AA Old Dominion in December but scheduled a visit to UVa this weekend.
Thomas, a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder, committed to UVa at the end of his visit. A second-team All-Beach District selection, he is listed with a 4.42-second 40-yard time by rivals.com.
In other developments from UVa’s recruiting weekend, a good source advises me that the Cavaliers have moved into the top two for the state’s No. 1-rated prospect, Hermitage linebacker Curtis Grant.

This weekend, James Farrior will be lining up, for the thousandth time it seems, at middle linebacker starting for the Steelers. He is wearing a super bowl ring now, as is his teammate, Heath Miller. He is among the Steelers’ all-time leading tacklers, and is the captain of a defense that is a strong edition to the Steelers’ legendary defensive units. When all the data are analyzed, Farrior rates well among Hall of Fame MLBs. He has no name, and one would not expect him to get serious consideration, at least not right away, but his numbers, character and contribution to the Steelers’ success can’t be denied.
Ohio State is a strong draw for any kid anywhere in the nation. I can’t say that I would be surprised or even angry if the young man heads off to Columbus. But . . . Grant can see the future if he wants to, a very, very bright one, at his position, that just might begin at that school in Charlottesville, head through glory, pro bowls, and super bowls, and possibly end at the HOF. Maybe London and Poindexter and Moore have gotten Farrior, Slade and Sharper to give the kid a call or two. No OSU linebacker has been demonstrably better than these guys.
