Tech recruit back on the market

Virginia Tech has rescinded its scholarship offer to Mario Nixon, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound defensive back from Norfolk Christian Academy who committed to the Hokies on May 15.

Tech’s decision follows Nixon’s trip to Charlottesville with three of his teammates who had committed to Virginia — Wil Wahee, Kwontie Moore and Courtnye Wynn.

My research indicates that they the Hokies were mostly upset that they were not made aware of the trip, not that they would have approved of it.

In any case, with Tech no longer involved, Virginia looms for the frontrunner for Nixon. He is rated the No. 16 prospect in Virginia by rivals.com.

Sounds like the kind of knee jerk stunt Al Groh would have pulled. Welcome aboard Mario, GO HOOS!

  2. Andy | August 9, 2011 at 6:44 pm

VT is the all time champ of disappearing offers! Their fragile egos will not allow them to lose a kid they have offered to UVA. Begs the question of how they will deal with their eventual loss to UVA in football. Losing to UVA in all other sports is routine….

  3. Steve | August 9, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Minor correction, Mario Nixon attended the practice with a member of his family. Wil Wahee, Courtnye Wynn, and Kwontie Moore were not with him on the visit.

  4. watchdog | August 9, 2011 at 6:52 pm

Nice try Doug, he was there with his mother.

  5. Jay Lee | August 9, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Wow! It’s hard to believe a program would take away a scholarship for visiting with his friends. I’m at a loss of words, this won’t sit well with me and my young boys in regards to VT. They love VT as do I, but I will take them to UVA games this year. I want them to see how Mike London interacts with recruits and players. I might become a fan of the Hoos, because of sleazy moves like this from Tech. We aren’t Alabama, LSU, and USC. We are Tech located in the middle of nowhere and half of our fans can’t even relate to urban city youth. Our only attraction is Frank, Vick, and our fans. It’s a sad day in VT land when a kid can’t be kid, but its worse for grown ups to not act grown up!

  6. Question | August 9, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Does your research honestly show that the rescinded scholarship has more to do with the Hokies being “mostly upset that they were not made aware of the trip” or because he will likely commit to UVA?

Just seems like an odd way to portray the story, to say the least.

  7. Hunter | August 9, 2011 at 7:12 pm

Who is your source on this? None attributed in your post. Very strange PR move by the Hokies… pulling scholarships doesn’t often win friends.

Also, did you actually see Nixon’s teammates accompany him? Widely reported elsewhere only Nixon and his mother visited, of their own accord.

  8. Cato | August 9, 2011 at 7:17 pm

He was there with his mother…

  9. Randy | August 9, 2011 at 7:17 pm

    Dougie,

Will you ever get your facts straight. All reports have Nixon visiting UVA last weekend with his family, not his team mates. The Hokies are most upset at the kid dumping Tech and apparently on the verge of switching to their in-state rival. Your slant on this story is unbelievable. Your last 2 paragraphs attempt to spin this as Tech changed their mind about Nixon, pushing him to UVA. The kid had 2nd thoughts about going to Tech, by all reports is about to announce a switch to UVA, and Tech dumped him before he could dump them.

    UVA’s gain

  11. Jeffrey | August 9, 2011 at 7:35 pm

    1) Nixon visited UVa with his mother; Moore, Wahee and Wynn were not along.

    2) Is Al Groh running the show in Bleaksburg now?

    3) I told yall a week ago that Nixon would be headed to UVa shortly.

  12. BC | August 9, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Get the facts straight Doug. Nixon did not visit UVA with his teammates. It was with his mother…..

n any case, with Tech no longer involved, Virginia looms for the frontrunner for Nixon. He is rated the No. 16 prospect in Virginia by rivals.com.

LoL- Seriously, can we have him now?? He was coming to UVa anyway. Even I believe you are better than this DD!

  14. Bruce Milam | August 9, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Actually, he was there with his family, not his teammates. And if Beamer wasn’t aware of it, he was the only on in the state who missed the announcement last Thursday. I think he’s getting schizo in his old age.

  15. Durty | August 9, 2011 at 8:15 pm

He took the visit by himself, Doug.

  16. jpg252 | August 9, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    Doug,

You should really be ashamed of yourself. Your research must not have been that in-depth. A kid sees his best friends and fellow teammates commit to a school, he second guesses his decision and is proverbially killed by the current fan base and school.

Virginia Tech has to be THE most childish school in the country. They CANNOT be out done by THE University of Virginia and “rescind” a scholly from a kid who probably all ready notified them he was de-committed from VT.

Their fan base cried all last year while UVa. wiped the floor with them in-state and now they’re doing it again. Those actions are absolutely absurd and, although they’re too sorry to, they should be ashamed at the childish actions they continue to commit.

It’s very easy to HATE the Hokies. They will be their own worst enemy as UVa. takes over the state not on the recruiting trail, but the field as well.

    Go ‘Hoos

  17. FU | August 9, 2011 at 9:24 pm

He was with his mom not his friends. Get your facts straight before you write such unprofessional articles.

  18. Robert | August 9, 2011 at 9:50 pm

VT rescinded his offer because they knew he was about to de-commit and they did not want UVA to have a recruiting victory over them.

  19. ken | August 9, 2011 at 10:01 pm

There HAS to be more to it than this.

Do they really have so many commitments that they can afford to “cut” this one? My read is that they figure he has already rescinded his commitment.

Is the protocol that one doesn’t go on trips to competing schools, even on your own nickel, because it looks like you are reopening recruiting? And, do you completely cut the guy out if he does something like this?

  20. hoo fan | August 9, 2011 at 10:23 pm

He did not visit with anyone but his family. Please get your facts straight at least.

  21. Plaxicoe | August 9, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Get your facts straight. Mario took in an open to the public UVA practice with his mother. None of his NCA teammates were present.

  22. Mark | August 9, 2011 at 11:22 pm

That seems like a surprising lack of class from Tech. Kids take visits all the time even when they have verballed. Everyone understands that a verbal is not a real commitment. So why pull the offer? It makes Tech look petty and not trustworthy.

  23. Frank | August 10, 2011 at 6:08 am

Easy come, easy go. You can not miss something that you never had to begin with.
How insecure is this guy? Maybe he can get mommy to go along and hold his hand for him.
There was another Nixon that could not be believed in the 70s, is this guy related to him?
If things do not work out for London and the Cavs, this could be the end of any chance for the Cavs to ever be a force in NCAA football.
As for as UVa goes, this is it, it is now or never.
    Good luck with that.
    Go Hokies !!!

  24. abdnva | August 10, 2011 at 7:05 am

I can’t say that I blame the Hokies. It was a poor decision by Nixon to make the trip, and let’s be realistic, it wasn’t an innocent/naive thing of – ‘Hey guys, let’s all drive up to Cville this weekend!’. Evidently the UVa staff continued to recruit Nixon even after his commitment to VT. I imagine his teammates did even more so.

Regardless, the Hokies will succeed without his services, and hopefully he will be comfortable in his new location with his HS friends.

  25. Nick | August 10, 2011 at 7:38 am

    What total and absolute nonsense.

First, Nixon did NOT visit UVA with his teammates. He visited with his mom. That’s it. And that account comes directly from a Norfolk Christian School assistant coach.

Second, if the Hokies are so petty that they will rescind a kid’s offer AFTER he’s already informed them that he was de-committing, then maybe Frankie needs to change his diaper and quit coaching. That is beyond pathetic and despicable.

Thanks for continuing to dig yourself a huge hole in the 757, Frank. Mike London will be happy to fill it with water after you jump in.

  26. Jason Helmintoller | August 10, 2011 at 7:42 am

Really pathetic move by Tech, I hope all parents of potential recruits see this reaction by Tech!

  27. Winston Rodney | August 10, 2011 at 8:04 am

Typing verbatim from the script provided by the Hokie Ministry of Misinformation again are you?

Nixon did indeed visit UVa on Saturday. However he was not accompanied by his NCA teammates but rather by his mother. And according to Mario, he committed to UVa on Tuesday prior to VPI pulling his scholarship offer.

What I find most disgusting about this whole situation is the pathetic attempt by the Hokie coaching staff to “save face” in front of their fanbase by portraying this as anything other than what it was – a decommitment of a recruit to their biggest rival.

  28. Matt | August 10, 2011 at 8:45 am

I think it was more a decommit than anything else, but they wanted to take his offer first, making sure they didn’t lose a commit to the Hoos. If this were true, several of their recruits would be gone right now, including their highest rated Donaldven Manning, for taking visits around the country.

  29. CountyGop | August 10, 2011 at 8:58 am

ah….he did not make the trip w/ his teammates. just his parents. do some research

  30. DD167 | August 10, 2011 at 9:01 am

Further research shows that Nixon made the call to VT about his decision to switch. Also, he was visiting with his Mom.

  31. Chris | August 10, 2011 at 9:02 am

you realize he didn’t attend practice with his teammates, right?

you realize he called vt to tell them he was switching his commitment and THEN they “rescinded” their scholarship, right?

my research indicates that your research leaves a lot to be desired.

  32. BTaylor | August 10, 2011 at 9:12 am

Doug, since you follow Jamie at Wahoos247 you should know that your post here is inaccurate. Mario travelled with only his Mom to UVa on Saturday and attended a public practice where there where there were a lot of eyes on him. Don’t fall for the misinformation and venom that the Hokies are spewing. Their message board attacks of these players namely Wil Wahee and Mario Nixon are uncalled for and disgusting.

  33. John Gwynn | August 10, 2011 at 9:13 am

Your “research” is laughable Doug. I suggest you get the facts on this Hokie decommit rather than just serving as Frank and Frodo Beamer’s mouth piece.

  34. John Gwynn | August 10, 2011 at 9:14 am

And feel free to continue censoring comments on here – not in keeping with Web 2.0 practices at all!

  35. Bill Compton | August 10, 2011 at 9:22 am

I have to say that I’m dissapointed in the Roanoke Times’ journalistic standards these days. The facts are not out yet and there is ample evidence to support that Nixon decommitted from Tech before they pulled his scholarship offer. Or, are you calling the kid a liar?

  36. SPD | August 10, 2011 at 9:53 am

It has been well documented that Nixon’s teammates did not accompany him on his trip to UVA’s practice. Nixon took his parents with him. Since you are a pro at using the paid UVA news sites for your “research” you would have surely seen this tidbit. Had to create more drama than needed right Dougie???

  37. Ben From Richmond | August 10, 2011 at 10:18 am

The kid was gone well before the scholarship was rescinded. Why even bother pulling it? Cut bait and move on.

  38. Chad | August 10, 2011 at 10:18 am

I have never seen one man more afraid of the truth…how long will this post last up here Dougie?

  39. Steve K | August 10, 2011 at 11:12 am

DD … please correct this post. He traveled with his family, not his teammates. And he plays on offense (WR/TE).

  40. Chad | August 10, 2011 at 11:27 am

Does your research indicate that Mario called Va Tech to decommit? Now why would he do that if the offer had been pulled? Sounds like spin to me.

  41. The other Tony | August 10, 2011 at 11:56 am

the hoos get our leftovers again !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Harold | August 10, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Mario Nixon’s scholarship was rescinded following his call to inform them that he would attend the University of Virginia. You know it, I know it, Frank knows it. Stop the bs please, it only makes people (hokies) look bad.

  43. Theo '85 | August 10, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Well, now that the offer has been rescinded, might as well marry her, Mario. We’d love to have you; the dorms are on O-Hill, meal plan is pretty good, and there are a few folks in the world who think UVA is a pretty good school to get an education. And you already know the tune to the good ol’ song, most likely.

  44. Danny | August 10, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Classless move by the hokies. Rescind the kid’s scholarship offer just because he attended practice at another school. Until kids have signed, they are free to do whatever they want and shouldn’t need to seek any permission to visit another school.

  45. SmithfieldHokie | August 11, 2011 at 12:34 pm

I don’t understand why UVA fans are getting so worked up. You’re getting a great athlete with lots of potential, plus 3 other D1 prospects from the same school. I guess it’s been so long for the UVA football faithful, even they can’t recognize a winning streak when it falls in their lap. There’s other recruits to be had and both Tech and UVA will get some of them. I think a victory over Duke will put the HOOs at ease.

  46. Eagle | August 17, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Tech is just like everybody else they used to hate. I hope all State teams do well. It’s what have you do for me lately.
