Potential opponent takes shot at Virginia
North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried on his team’s NCAA Tournament chances:
“Look at Virginia. They’ve got no wins against the big three in our league [North Carolina, Florida State and Duke] and they’ve got the 223rd-ranked non-conference strength of schedule [actually the 227th]. Yet they seem to be solidly in the field. We could have been ranked [in the Top 25] if we’d scheduled the 223rd-ranked schedule.”

61-60, you can complain about us getting a bid when you beat us…
Instead of scheduling the 223rd ranked schedule, Mark might have been better off if his team had actually beaten UVA at home rather than losing to them – and they lost in no small measure because of the bonehead time out that Mark himself called with 4 seconds left in the game.
Lots of room to talk. He got to play bottom feeders Wake, BC, and Ga. Tech twice, and they lost to Ga. Tech in Raleigh. Lost at Stanford, while Virginia won at a better Pac-12 team’s home (Oregon).
Let’s see now. A loss to Carolina ( a top five team) by three points, a loss to Duke (in and out of the top five all season) by three points, two losses to Fla St, a consistent top 15 team all season by 3 points, more wins in the ACC than NC State, and a win over the Wolfpack in their den.
Bet he’s getting those sour grapes from the wine he’s drinking. Sounds like bulletin board material to me.
UVA 7-5 against the RPI Top 100
NC St 5-9 against the RPI Top 100
By the way, NC State also has no wins against the ACC big three.
Can’t blame a guy for lobbying for an invitation. He’s usually not this outspoken. I guess he’s feeling pretty good about tomorrow’s matchup against a depleted Cavs unit. Brogdon made a big contribution to the victory in Raleigh. If the ‘Hoos knock them off again, Gottfried can go commiserate with Seth Greenberg.
I don’t think I can recall a time when an ACC coach knocked another ACC program on the “outside the family” issue of an NCAA bid. Usually, we support all member schools’ opportunity to make the field, and pull for all of them to advance. Even more disgraceful is that Gottfried coaches a long-time member school — it would be one thing if they had only come on board recently; but this is one of the old teams making a disparaging, public statement on another team. Worse, Virginia isn’t taking anything off of NC State’s plate — NCState has a path to the tournament even at this point. So, it’s not enough that Gottfried erred in making the statement, he hurt the overall conference, along with UVA, and embarrassed NC State. If he doesn’t apologize, the ACC has really become nothing resembling what it once was.
I hope the Hoos can help Gottfried secure a tournamrent bid tomorrow—-
to the NIT.
Gottfried is a jerk. I loved watching my Heels destroy him twice this year.
I don’t care who your team is…..you have to stand up for your league and your team, but not at the epxense of another team in YOUR league…..his comments were below the belt, uncalled for, unnecessary, and inappropriate. They could beat UVa today, anything is possible in the ACC…..but if you loose (my hope- I’m a UVa fan) you are going to come out looking like a fool having made these comments. Hold you tongue!!!
How did that Tar Heel beat-down feel today, Mark? Loser.
