This just in: Phillip Sims eligible to play at UVa this fall.

This release just came from the University of Virginia:

NCAA Grants UVa Quarterback Phillip Sims Transfer Waiver Alabama Transfer Eligible to Compete This Fall

Charlottesville, Va. – The NCAA informed the University of Virginia today that sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims has been granted a waiver and will be eligible to compete on the Cavalier football team this fall. He will not be required to sit out one season per the NCAA’s bylaws regarding undergraduate transfers. Sims transferred to UVa after spending the past two years at Alabama. He redshirted the 2010 season and played as a backup in 2011.

Sims will have three years of eligibility at Virginia starting this season. He has been enrolled at the University since June.

“I am pleased we were able to work with the NCAA to get a resolution regarding this matter,” said Virginia coach Mike London. “We look forward to having Phillip and the rest of our team in camp this August.”

Note: Mike London, assistant coaches and Sims are not available for further comment.

Whose butt did London and the rest of the Wahoos kissed to have Sims eligible? Wow, talk about a SEC invasion to the north!

    What a dope!

Haha, the cHokies are already talking trash. You losers are pathetic.

London is slowly, but SURELY getting Virginia back to relevance!!….The Wahoos should redshirt former Hampton Crabber David Watford this year, which they should have done last year, and let Phillips Sims earn the No. QB spot – which he should do easily……..This guy was the NUMBER ONE prospect in Virginia and the NUMBER ONE quarterback in the country by SuperPrep…..I say let Sims, Tim Smith and Perry Jones all on the field at the same time and let it roll!!…They all were teamates at state champ Oscar Smith H.S. in Chesapeake……….SHOULD BE AN INTERESTING YEAR IN CHARLOTTESVILLE AFTER ALL THIS COMING FOOTBALL SEASON…….WATCH OUT VA TECH…..WATCH OUT!!!

Again the hoos get the best from the NCAA who bend over to give them what they wanted. Who on the hoos has info on the NCAA ? From the Ralph Sampson era living in Hollands basement to Mike London using facebook illegally, the hoos get only secondary violations from the NCAA. Remember 1999 when the hoos had basketball problems, nothing was done even after using boosters acted illegally and having more improper housing arrangements. Even with the help of the NCAA, the hoos remain a doormat in NCAA major sports !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Joe, not worried since the hoos are a pimple on the big body of NCAA sports.

Is there something fishy going on here? Why is Sims unique?

  9. Doug Doughty | July 12, 2012 at 3:06 pm

I have a copy of a blank waiver application and it’s pretty straightforward. Somebody must have put together a very skillful case in Sims’ behalf. I don’t know of any “in” that UVa has with the NCAA.

Again? I don’t think that you mean there’s been a case just like this and I can’t think of another time when the NCAA really “bent over backwards.”

If Virginia had a history of “getting away” with stuff, maybe the ruling would have been different. Hard to say.

Agree that Watford should be redshirted.

If that were to happen, Rocco would be a senior in 2013, Sims would be a junior, Watford would be a sophomore and Lambert a redshirt freshman, as would Johns.

Not sure who’s calling whom a loser.

  13. W. AREHART | July 13, 2012 at 9:07 am

If they are as good as everyone says, the Watford and Lambert should transfer.I count 6 or 7 QB’S and another one recruited this year.Iknow you need a backup ,not 5 or 6.Not a lot of loyalty to their recruits.

Really, ACC football as a whole has been irrelevant on the national stage, ever since the FSU and Miami programs declined. Sorry Hokies. Your football team is good, but it is frequently the best of a mediocre conference. National powers are sending players to the NFL who become stars. That just isn’t happening for the Hokies. Or the Cavs.

… another in a line of Uva QBs that will leave Charlottesville never having beat VT.

I’m sure Sims is good but rankings don’t mean jack. He sounda a lot like Ronald curry with lots of hype but can he do anything on field? If he was so good why couldnt’ he beat out a lesser ranked AJ Mccarron at Bama? Old blue, you summed up ACC Football perfectly. Hokies have been tallest midget in terrible league and then go out and embarrass league by losing to lesser teams in BCS bowls like Michigan and Kansas etc etc.

Auburn played three QBs (Frazier, Trotter and Mosely) in the Chick Fil A bowl against us. Admittedly, Mosely got hurt, but that doesn’t change the fact that all three were ready to play and bring their respective unique abilities to the offense. The coaches were ready to adjust and roll on with three separate guys. It was impressive to watch up close. Look at the year’s stats, and you’ll see that all three played in multiple contests throughout the year. Like it or not, but you have to have three QBs ready to play in today’s game. It is virtually impossible for one kid to stay upright all year, or even to give your team its “best chance to win” in every game. Doesn’t matter if his name is Aikman, Schaub, Moore, Leinart or Brooks. Different guys bring different things to different situations. Why do we have to insist on trying to make one QB, however decent his skill set, be “the man” for every moment? It’s foolish and London is correct to re-shape the paradigm. Get used to it: three guys need to be ready to play, and the coaches need to make sure they are ready to play. OK? With that in mind, you need to have 5 QBs on the roster in various stages of readiness, which means you work the redshirt process to ensure you always have three ready to play in every game.

Tony… Uva has over 20 national titles in NCAA sports while tech is only competitive in 1 sport… and they are mediocre in that… UVA made a bowl in football last year, made the NCAA tournament in basketball and baseball, which are the three major sports… U have no idea what you are talking about. Now tech not having a national title in anything is pathetic… can you name another division one school that doesn’t? the only one i know of is boise state.. and they are small! Even Wake has a NCAA baseball title!

Doug, I hope this works, this e-mail is NOT about Sims as a UVa player. It is in support of Frank McCue. I am a proud HOKIE, VT ’63. That said, Frank McCue was “bigger” than the Cav-A-Hoo’s athletic program and an even bigger person than that. So if Mr. Jefferson and I could have a “vote” in the Cav’s Hall of Fame, here is one hokie vote for Dr. Frank McCue.

    George Baylor, VT`63, Waynesboro, VA
