UVa release on Lazor leaving for NFL

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia head football coach Mike London announced today that offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor has resigned his position with the Virginia football program to accept a coaching position in the National Football League.

“I appreciate Bill Lazor’s time here as a member of my staff,” London said. “We are now wrapping up our recruiting and starting our preparation for the 2013 season. We will move quickly to find a new offensive coordinator to keep the program moving forward.”

Lazor joined London’s staff in 2010 after spending the previous seven seasons in the NFL. He was the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks in 2008 and 2009. Lazorspent four seasons with the Washington Redskins. During the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Lazor was the quarterbacks coach for legendary head coach Joe Gibbs. In his first two seasons in Washington, Lazor was an offensive assistant. Lazor got his NFL start in 2003 under Dan Reeves as the Atlanta Falcons offensivequality control coach.

Lazor was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University at Buffalo in 2001 and 2002. Lazor spent seven seasons at his alma mater, Cornell. He started as a part-time assistant in 1994 andprogressed to the passing game coordinator, recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1999 and 2000. He also spent time as the running backs, tight ends, wide receivers and junior varsity head coach during his tenure with the Big Red. He is a native of Scranton, Pa.

“We have always been aware Bill Lazor might pursue a great opportunity in the National Football League,” said Virginia Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver. “The job he is taking with an NFL team is simply that. We see this as an opportunity for our football program that we will seek to maximize.”

Seems like a big blow for the Cavs.

Man if you’re a UVA recruit you’ve got be upset. They can’t keep a coach.

Had to happen. That means, likely, the migration of at least one, if not two, quarterbacks to other programs. It should also mean a return to a 60-40 run-to-pass based offense and better recruiting prospects for the bigger TBs who are avoiding UVA like the plague. This will no longer be a place for the Lalich, Rocco and Verica experiments. Back to some option, some zone read, and some QB mobility plays to challenge defenses. There’s room for a Blundin, Majkowski, Sherman, Ellis and even Groh — but there will also be real opportunity for a Hagans, Goodman, Brooks, Sewell and Moore. I hope Sims comes back leaner, quicker, more decisive and more competent. I hope Watford does the same. Those guys need to show something special or get the heck off the team too. Enough coddling and cooing and coaching — time to play for the privilege.

    Hey Doug,

Is Randy King still there or did he retire?

I always liked the timescast you all did.

Should have been a TV show.

    Please let me know.

    Hey Doug
Quick question – Did you see this coming?

Did I see Lazor’s departure? It didn’t surprise me. He had been mentioned with NFL jobs almost every year. He may have felt threatened by O’Brien but shouldn’t have been.

Randy mostly covers VMI football and basketball, as well as ODAC basketball. He also handles virtually all of our golf coverage.

I miss the show, too. Tried to come up with one thing every week to insult him or get him rolling.

I think you might have seen a migration anyway. They’ve really gone overboard on quarterback recruiting, witness the guys who are playing elsewhere now. You should recruit no more than one pure quarterback a year and they’ve recruited two in each of the past two years, not including the Sims transfer.

They got rid of four coaches. That was their decision. Not ready to agree that they can’t keep a coach.

Offenses were not rated very highly nationally during Lazor’s three seasons. Think that’s mostly a reflection of talent, though.
