UVa announces Boise State series

From UVa sports information:

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia and Boise State will meet in football for a two-game series in 2015 and 2017, the schools jointly announced today. The teams are scheduled to meet Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, in Charlottesville and Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, in Boise, Idaho.

“We’re excited to announce this series with a program that has been exceptional over the last decade,” said Virginia Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver. “They’ve done it with great coaching, solid recruiting and a fearless approach to competition. We are trying to do the same thing and this will be an incredible challenge for us as we continue to build our program. The 2015 and 2017 seasons could end up being two of the toughest schedules in the history of our football program and we hope they will excite and energize our fans, student-athletes and recruits.”

Boise State has been one of the most successful BCS football programs over the last 11 seasons. The Broncos have finished in the top-20 of the Associated Press poll nine times during that span and won nine conference titles since 2002. Over that nine-year period the Broncos have produced a record of 129-15 (.896), appeared in 11 consecutive bowl games and won seven of those postseason contests.

Current Boise State head coach Chris Petersen is 84-8 since taking over the Boise State program in 2006.

This will be the first meeting between Virginia and Boise State in football.

I understand Oliver’s west coast connections, but this is getting to be a bit much. How about an interesting game against an SEC opponent? Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss would be great match ups.

UVA ought to be familiar with the field though, having played on the smurf turf in a bowl game when they turned down the Champs bowl in Florida for a destination more befitting them for winter.

Kudos to the Hoos for toughening up the schedule, but I’ve got to ask: does Jon Oliver’s telephone only work in the Pacific Northwest? I like the Oregon & BSU serieses, and I like the recent hires from the Pacific NW (Tony Bennett + 2 FB coaches), but I’d like to see some match ups or hires from anywhere east of the Mississippi for a change…..

It appears that UVA received a very big splash commitment from a 5-star football recruit, yet it isn’t registering with this paper. Query: if Virginia Tech had gotten the commitment from Bayside’s Quin Blanding, would it have made the Roanoke Times somewhere?

I apologize if it was reported and I just can’t find it, but it seems it ought to be fairly visible, right?

Bob H, the reason UVa turned down the Champs bowl was because exams were scheduled during that week.

Were the officials the same for last night’s North Cross quarterfinal game the same as the one’s for last Saturday’s championship game? Afte reading this mornings’ comment from the opposing coach, I have to think yes…Please advise.

Good luck in tomorrow’s game..Four in a row is hard for any team..
