In the days since the posting of last week’s Notebook Plus, I’ve been wondering how I could have overlooked Bucky Hodges.
The column discussed the possibility of recruit Andrew Ford winning the Tech quarterback job as a true freshman and said the only other scholarship quarterbacks on Tech’s roster are Mark Leal, who will be a fifth-year senior, and Brenden Motley.
Hodges, a 2013 Tech signee, was rated the No. 4 prospect in the state last year by The Roanoke Times.
I knew there had been some sort of hang-up about Hodges’ graduation from Salem High School in Virginia Beach but didn’t think he was one of the three Tech signees who are at Fork Union.
I didn’t check till today when I did find Hodges on the roster, but he was among a group of players listed below the numerical roster. Hodges, now listed at 6 foot 6 and 235 pounds, does not have a number – a pretty good sign that he would be redshirted – but he is listed as a quarterback.
That said, one of our posters was correct when he said that Hodges has been working as a tight end with Tech’s scout team. Moreover, what I’m hearing is that Hodges is likely to stay there.
Just think of him as the tight end to be named later in the decision to play Logan Thomas at quarterback. Thomas was projected as a tight end/athlete coming out of Brookville High School in Lynchburg.
Heck, who knows what NFL team might still be looking at Thomas as a tight end.
The Hokies aren’t touting Hodges as the next Eric Ebron, the 6-4, 245-pound tight end who has a team-leading 44 receptions for North Carolina, but they see some of the same physical attributes.
With Ryan Malleck returning from a redshirt year and true freshman Kalvin Cline establishing himself as a reliable target, the addition of Hodges to the mix should make for a potent tight-end trio in 2014.
Now, it’s just a matter of determining who gets the ball to them.
