What’s in a name?

Anyone out there wondering where the name “Learning Lines” came from?

Well, in case you don’t already know her allow me to introduce Jenny Lee, Family Service of Roanoke Valley chief development officer, who dropped former edu writer Courtney Cutright a note suggesting the name.

I asked Jenny if I could share her comments here and she graciously obliged.

“I’ve always liked the phrase ‘Learning Lines.’ That was the title of a neat painting done by John Will Creasy years and years ago, and it described the process of actors learning their lines for plays when Mill Mountain Theatre was located at the old Rockledge Inn on top of Mill Mountain.”

She went on to say the phrase “learning lines” could also be interpreted as writing about learning and said she’s “tickled” that we’ve decided to use the name. Thanks Jenny.

Thanks, Annie! All credit to Mona Black, who was the heart of Mill Mountain Theatre for more than 40 years, not to mention my beloved mentor at the Theatre. She taught me about learning lines, in more ways than one! Love your new blog!
