Coming Up

In the market for a new home? Don’t miss the Open House guide in the paper Saturday and Sunday.

How would you fare in the geography bee?

The Virginia National Geographic Bee is coming up next month and a Roanoke County student is set to compete against the top students in the state. You can read all about that in Wednesday’s education notebook, but in the meantime would you have what it takes to compete?

globe0404Here are some questions from the school-level geography bee provided by the National Geographic Society.

Come back this afternoon for the answers.

1. From its source in Minnesota, the Mississippi River flows south about 2,300 miles before emptying into what large gulf?

2. A subspecies of brown bear known as the Kodiak bear takes its common name from an island that lies off the southern coast of what state?

3. The Danakil Depression, located in part of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the lowest points on which continent?

4. What is the term for the triangular deposit of sediment sometimes found at the mouth of a river — moraine or delta?

Full disclosure: I think I knew the answer to one maybe two of these questions. Good luck.

I’m pretty sure I know the first 3, guessed at the last one – Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, Africa, maybe Delta.

Those are very easy questions. Answered correctly above, multiple times.

That being said, the state of education in this country is abysmal. Geographic & otherwise.
