Last night Roanoke Superintendent Rita Bishop updated board members on the school system’s new summer enrichment program RCPS+. Bishop continued to report the program is going smoothly and was optimistic about finding ways to fund it in the future.
But what was most interesting about the update last night was the number of students who are currently attending. About 2,000 students are going to RCPS+, which focuses on enrichment activities to continue learning through the summer months.
That figure is about 700 less students than initially signed up when enrollment closed months ago. Bishop said this is about typical and talked about some reasons why parents might not elect to send their children.
One thing that was touched on was the stigma of remediation associated with summer school and how that could factor into students potentially not coming. Roanoke officials have pushed hard to focus RCPS+ on enrichment, not remediation.
So parents what do you think? If you’ve sent the kiddos off to RCPS+, why? And if you’ve elected to keep them at home and not participate, why?
