Perhaps you caught this morning’s “10 Things to Know for Today” and if you’re like me No. 3 caught your eye: opting out of standardized tests.
Here’s the Associated Press piece on parents who oppose the tests so their children simply don’t participate.
Here in Virginia we are in the midst of that special time of year where the Virginia Department of Education releases testing data, which has made for plenty of talk about testing. After the release of Standards of Learning pass rates last month a group of local folks called for changes to the tests.
Testing has also been discussed as gubernatorial candidates make the rounds. Both Terry McAuliffe, who visited Green Valley Elementary last week, and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, propose changes to Standards of Learning.
While I’ve heard plenty of talk about changes to tests, today’s story is the first thing I’ve seen about parents opting kids out. According to the story, the movement is small, but growing.
So, what do you think?
