VTC applicants in Roanoke
A banner sign went up across Campbell Avenue yesterday morning welcoming applicants of Roanoke’s Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
The prospective students are here today for the school’s fifth round of interviews. I’m told 30 students are interviewing today using the same process that was put in place last year when VTC was selecting its inaugural class.
A final interview date is set for March 5, with all the offers for a spot in the school’s second class made by the end of March.
You can read more about the interview process, which is adapted from a Canadian medical school, in a story I wrote last year. School official likened the interview day to a speed-dating set-up.

This concept is a good thing for the long-term future of the Valley, thanks to the vision of Dr. Edward Murphy and team. Sages say it’s darkest before the light; conversely, it’s lightest before the dark…metaphorically. It appears that the great civilizations of the past, fell at the highest point of their apex, by not continuing to advance in the fields of science, medicine, and related academics. Granted, there was initially a high degree of skepticism in Roanoke and surroundings, that Carilion would become the medical version of “Wal-mart,” putting “mom and pop” doctor shops out of business… shown to be unfounded. Conversely, it could very well make Roanoke the “silicon valley” of medicine, while advancing medical technology with this new attraction of “brains” from the world over. I met Dr. Murphy in my formerly working for Carilion…and I believe he accepts sincerely my compiments when I say, “good looking out.”
