Urgent care coming to Towers

Two area doctors are set to open a new urgent care center at  Towers Shopping Shopping Center by establishing a Doctors Express.

Doctors Express is a franchise chain of urgent care medical centers that caters to those who want to avoid an emergency room, or don’t have a regular physician they can go to.

Drs. Steven Osborn and Serge Depret-Guillaume will be the doctors and owners of the new practice. Osborne has been a physician with LewisGale Physicians working at the Valley View practice for more than a decade. Depret-Guillaume has been at Christiansburg Family Practice.

The center will include onsite lab work services, x-rays and a pharmacy.

The urgent care will be located in the former ABC store location at Towers and construction to renovate the space will likely begin in September, said John Gilliam, the developer and another owner.

Gilliam, who helps open Doctors Express locations in Virginia, told me the two doctors contacted Doctors Express about opening a location. He said he anticipates the urgent care opening in mid-November.

“There is a tremendous need for urgent care in the Roanoke area,” Gilliam said.

Gilliam added that Doctors Express is seeking to open 25 new locations in the state during the next decade. The company already has locations in Woodbridge and Alexandria Virginia, but the Roanoke location will be the first of its centers to open outside the Northern Virginia area.

The announcement of the Towers urgent care comes shortly after an urgent care opened in Bonsack.

Once open the urgent care will be open seven days a week.

  1. Dr Depret used to be my PCP in Salem before he left to practice in Christiansburg. He is a wonderful physician and Roanoke should be grateful for his return! I know I am!

  2. The urgent care in the Kroger Cave Spring only lasted a few months. Is there enough need to make them successful?

  3. I think this is a wonderful location and opportunity. . I like the location of the new urgent care at towers – i think its a smart local on the corner there and will make it easy to get in and out.

I also think that the Urgent Care at the Kroger’s Cave Spring failed for a couple of reasons – 1. the location in the store and the amount of traffic there was a turn off, 2. they always were closed when i was at that store 3. its seems illogical to have an urgent care inside the grocery.

Its nice to hear another business opening that is not another eatery.

  4. @david I think time will answer that question. I’ve heard some in the local medical community talk about the need for urgent care in terms of getting folks who don’t need to be in the ER, but do need treatment quickly.

I’ll keep you posted when I find out more information.

  5. I am really happy to hear this news. I definitely see the need for Urgent Care in Towers area. A family member of mine has experience with Dr. Osborn. He is a very caring man and really listens to what is going on with you. I hope it will work out very well for them.

  6. Urgent Care is needed in Roanoke!!! I love my family doctor but it is not easy to get in all of the time for basic care. I refuse to sit and wait in the ER and pay those prices! Can’t wait for them to open — Does anyone know when?

  7. @Marie This urgent care should open by mid-November, but they haven’t shared an exact date yet. I’ll post another entry when I know the date or more information.

  9. The Urgent Care facilities are not really set up for “urgent care”. If have any kind of serious problem better head for the ER. They are basically an overpriced clinic that will see you that day. Last time I was in it took them 2 1/2 hrs. to see me. And only then at the insistance of a loved one.

  11. @Lukey It does not look like that is the case with Doctors Express. Check out this video I found from the news this morning. http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/happening-now/index.html#/v/1146048661001/express-medical-centers-on-the-rise/?playlist_id=86919

It looks like Doctors Express takes a different approach to the medical industry and urgent care and will make a great difference in Roanoke. Does anyone know when they will be open?
