Carilion to expand its retail pharmacy

Carilion Clinic is adding two more retail pharmacy locations for patients.

The nonprofit plans to open a pharmacy inside Roanoke Memorial Hospital and at its 3 Riverside location. (The Riverside building is the still relatively new outpatient building at the corner of South Jefferson and Reserve Avenue in Roanoke.)

The Riverside pharmacy, which is costing about $84,200 to construct, will be on the ground floor to the right of the entrance, according to city records.

The one inside Roanoke Memorial will also be on the ground floor and will cost about $80,000 to build, according to the city. The pharmacy is going where the former food court and gift shop were, a while ago. That space, which is behind the current gift shop area, has most recently been used as office space.

F&S Building Innovations Inc. has been hired as the contractor for both.

The clinic already operates a retail pharmacy for patients to fill prescriptions inside its medical building at 2091 Crystal Springs Ave. and inside Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, said spokesman Eric Earnhart.

“The new locations will dispense new and refill prescriptions and provide patient education regarding those prescriptions,” Earnhart said. ” This will be convenient for patients being discharged from the hospital, patients visiting their doctors and Carilion Clinic employees. There will also be a limited selection of over-the-counter medication relating to cough, cold and general pain relief.”

Expect to see the pharmacies open around December.

The Carilion Medical Pharmacy in the Crystal Springs building is one of the best pharmacies around! They offer a punch card for $6 off your 11th prescription and they deliver to Carilion offices! The staff is so wonderful as well and make you feel like you are in a true neighborhood pharmacy. Such a difference from the Carilion perception!

I always laugh when I see “non profit” applied to Carilion.

Great idea. Huge improvement in convenience and safety for patients.
