Carilion launches mobile app for patients

Carilion Clinic’s MyChart, an online personalized health management tool for patients, is now available as a mobile app.

MyChart launched in 2008 as a secure online program for Carilion’s patients to see test results, email doctors, view upcoming appointments and check immunization and medication records.

Since the number of patients using the system has grown to about 20,000 people, said Carilion spokeswoman Allie Buth.

Last year, Carillion began to develop the mobile app as way to make the MyChart system easier for patients to access, said Dr. Anthony Stavola, vice chairman of Carilion’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, in a news release.

“It is our hope that patients feel better connected to their healthcare providers and more proactive in managing their health,” Stavola said.

The app is available for iPhones, iPads, and Android phones and tablets.

    How do I get it?

    • Megan Schnabel | August 28, 2012 at 10:57 am

@David: (Sarah’s editor, Megan Schnabel, here, checking in on her blog while she’s out of the office for a few days.)

According to Carilion’s MyChart info page (which you can access by clicking the link Sarah included in this blog post), you need to get an access code from your doctor in order to sign up for MyChart. The site also provides a list of participating doctors.

I just tried to sign up for this and was told I have to visit my doctor (which requires a $50 co-pay) and then request access. Then, a letter with a code will be mailed to me. Great try Carilion, but a HUGE fail for creating such a convoluted, 1980′s process.

No, I think the question was how do we get the app, not how do we get MyChart.

    • Megan Schnabel | August 29, 2012 at 11:42 am

@Smity: I have an Android phone and was able to download the app through the Google Play store. I haven’t tried on an iPhone or iPad but assume it’s available through iTunes.

However, the app is useless — you can’t even log in — unless you first set up a MyChart account through your doctor.

I JUST LOOKED ON GOOGLE PLAY AND IT’S NOT THERE

    • Megan Schnabel | August 30, 2012 at 1:55 pm

@Chris: I just looked again and it’s still there. Just type MyChart into the search box and you should find it.

How much does Carilion pay you to do their marketing?

    • Sarah Jones | September 5, 2012 at 12:13 pm

@Joy I don’t work for Carilion. I am paid by The Roanoke Times. But I suspect you already knew that and your question is more aimed at understanding the news judgement for reporting on this new app. I think it is newsworthy to share information about a new product like this that the area’s largest health provider has launched and affects patients in our community. How patients have access to communicating with doctors is a topic that I think readers of my blog would like to know about.
