How to check a nursing home’s record
If you’ve ever wondered about the nursing home that cares for a loved one, there’s a new and easy way to check its regulatory record.
ProPublica, a national nonprofit news organization that specializes in investigative journalism, has created this online tool to view federal sanctions against nursing homes across the country.
The reports, which cover the past three years, are taken from the U.S. Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services, the agency that conducts the inspections. Deficiencies are ranked on a scale of A to L, with A being the most minor violation and L the most serious.
A quick search of Roanoke nursing homes shows a number with violations, but none of them in the J to L range, which would indicate an immediate and serious threat to resident health or safety.

there is NO recourse when the gov’ment is in full control…other than “humans’ good, or bad, intentions…”, and the gov’mint, of course.
when the aca is implemented, we will have hens guarding the quality of health care provided by gov’mint health care hen-houses.
Laurence,
I appreciate you writing about this very important issue. Many families will select a nursing home for a loved one and there is plenty of free information available online to help make that choice.
Virginia families can request free nursing home inspection reports by mailing Center for Quality Health Care Services and Consumer Protection, 3600 West Broad Street, Suite 216, Richmond, VA 23230-4920. Information is also available via the CMS Nursing Home Compare website, which ranks nursing homes on a five-star system.
Thank you for sharing this information.
