A New River Valley physician was sent to jail today to begin serving a 33-month prison sentence for illegally distributing painkillers and other medication to her patients.
Dr. Linda Sue Cheek received the sentence following nearly two days of testimony in U.S. District Court in Roanoke.
Judge Glen Conrad gave Cheek 27 months on the drug distribution charges, and another six months on a probation violation.
Evidence presented during a February trial showed that Cheek, who ran a pain management clinic in Dublin, prescribed drugs without a valid DEA registration number or used one issued to another doctor in her practice.
At the time, Cheek was not allowed to dispense controlled substances because of a 2008 conviction for improperly billing Medicare and Medicaid.
Federal courts reporter Jeff Sturgeon was at today’s hearing, and will have a full report later that can be seen here.
