Your videos: Mike Roos "Blacksburg"

An old TimesCast pal, Cincinnati's Mike Roos, wrote this song right after the Virginia Tech shootings. He's continued crafting the Dock Boggs-style piece ever since. Here's a video he made to accompany the song.

He's got the feel, alright. Funny that murder ballads went out of fashion but murder never did.

You're right, murder ballads are out of fashion. And murder ain't. Maybe if we had more murder ballads, we'd have less murder. But probably not.

Top 5 music videos this week on the MusicCast

Updated Oct. 8: We added two new videos to the MusicCast in the past week and, lo, now they top the charts. "Let's Run Away," by Neanderpaul, weighs in at No. 1 and "Love Came by Sundown," by City of Statues is No. 2. They displace "Burned Out Car," by Red Clay River, which fell from first to, well, not worst, but not in this week's Top 5. "Sweet Home in Virginia," by Poe Mack, which was tied for first last week, is still around, though. So what will be the favorite music video on the MusicCast next week? You tell us. We base the MusicCast Top 5 on who gets the most plays -- so if there's someone you like, just keep on clicking.

What is the MusicCast?

The MusicCast is a video blog of local bands. We started in the fall of '06 bringing bands into our studio at The Roanoke Times. That proved popular with fans, not so much with our co-workers -- especially after one metal band brought in amps the size of a small house. We're told that things were rattling on desks on the second floor.

Now we're recording out of Jake Dempsey's Red Room Studio in Roanoke.

Along with the videos themselves, you'll find links to the band's website and MySpace profile. Click the MySpace profile link to see when the band is playing again and to contact them directly.
