Hokie equipment manager won't need Beamer notePosted Sep19, 2007 at 11:30 AMVirginia Tech Football Coach Frank Beamer won't need to call in favors to get equipment manager Lester Karlin out of jury duty. Judge Ray Grubbs just dismissed Karlin as a potential juror in the Morva trial after both the prosecution and defense questioned him individually. On Tuesday, Karlin told Grubbs that serving up to three weeks on the jury would cause hardship to his job "to get the Virginia Tech football team on the field and on the road." Grubbs laughed at that saying that he should have Beamer call the judge to excuse Carlin "Somehow I find it hard to believe, with the size of Virginia Tech, that it would be impossible to find someone else," Grubbs said. No word on whether Beamer did calll the judge, nor did Karlin hand over a note to Grubbs today. He did tell prosecutor Brad Finch that the Hokies would weigh heavily on his mind and "distract" him throughout the trial. Karlin, who is also a member of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, said he thought that connection to the case would cause him to be biased. The rescue squad responded to the shooting of sheriff's office Cpl. Eric Sutphin. Karlin did not respond, but he said he'd talked to many of his colleagues about the day. Because he had already formed an opinion about the case, both the prosecution and defense voted to excuse him, and Grubbs concurred. |
