Court adjourned for today

After hearing from six witnesses today in the capital murder case against William Morva, Circuit Judge Ray Grubbs has adjourned court for the day.

Grubbs had told jurors to expect testimony until 5:30 or 6 p.m., but it moved along more quickly than expected and there were no more witnesses at the courthouse, ready to testify. As he let jurors go for the day, Grubbs told them not to get accustomed to the early release.

Jurors today heard from Montgomery County sheriff's deputy Russell Quesenberry, who drove Morva to the hospital; Jennifer Preston, a patient who said she saw Morva shoot security guard Derrick McFarland; and Johnathan Chisum, a physician's assistant who first treated Morva and then tried with others to save McFarland's life.

They also heard from nurses Melissa Epperly and Dawn Doss and Dr. Jane Weiseman. All of them were working at Montgomery Regional the morning McFarland was shot. They described finding him face down in a large pool of blood and taking him to a trauma room to try to save him.

The case is scheduled to resume with more testimony at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

About 10 minutes were spent this afternoon with deputies trying to move the defense table so defense attorneys could see a TV screen used to show pictures but, at the same time, keep Morva in a location where he could easily be watched.
