Perriello’s push for funding Martinsville center clears first hurdle

Tom Perriello

Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Albemarle, has a talking point today: His request for request for $1 million for the Center for Emerging Industries in Martinsville has cleared its first legislative hurdle.

The center — which would offer degrees in Renewable Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, Technology Integration, and Entrepreneurship — is part of the New College Institute.

Specifically, a House subcommittee voted to include the money in its budget proposal.

Perriello calls the New College program a “game-changer” for the economically embattled Martinsville and Henry County. “We can and must start making things in American again and I want it to start right here in Martinsville,” Perriello says in a release.

You can read the full text of his statement on The Ticker, the blog for The Blue Ridge Business Journal.

Interesting contrast – the GOP wants to eliminate such ‘needless’ spending, even when the investment would provide an obvious bootstrap to a locality like Martinsville.

Thanks for pointing out that people may well chose to throw away a hard working representative who works FOR his district and nation in favor of someone who will vote to “shut down” the government, “multi-gate” the administration, throw the working class to the wolves, and support every bad idea the Grossly Onerous Policy makers can come up with. This is a sad era in our history that will make the books and burden us with a stigma for decades to come. The specter of the greatest nation on earth going backwards is sad.
