Sen. Yvonne Miller to miss start of legislative session; Puckett will take gavel on transportation committee

Veteran state Sen. Yvonne Miller, D- Norfolk, will have surgery next week and will miss the opening of the General Assembly session, Senate Democrats announced late today.

Miller, 76, chairs the Senate Transportation Committee and is a member of the budget-writing Senate Finance Committee. She has been in the Senate since 1988 and in the General Assembly since 1984.

It is unclear how long Miller will be absent from legislature. Sen. Phillip Puckett, D-Russell County, will chair the transportation committee in her absence. Miller will return to the session as soon as her health permits, according to the announcement by the Senate Democratic caucus.
