Republican emerges to challenge Deeds
Looks like state Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, won’t be getting a free ride this fall.
The morning e-mail brings a media alert that T.J. Aldous will announce his candidacy for the state Senate on Tuesday in either Lexington or Buena Vista.
Aldous is an attorney from Charlottesville and, we presume, a Republican.
The district covers Highland County, Bath County, Alleghany County, Covington, Rockbridge County, Lexington, Buena Vista, Nelson County, Charlottesville and most of Albemarle County.
This would mean every sitting Democratic senator in western Virginia will have opposition this fall — but Democrats have yet to field candidates against Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, Ralph Smith, R-Bent Mountain, or in the district that William Wampler, R-Bristol, is retiring from.
Michael Sluss wrote about this imbalance in Sunday’s Roanoke Times. We also had this previous blog post asking: Have Republicans already outfoxed the Democrats in this fall’s elections?
We also call your attention to our book giveaway contest: Will Democrats give Smith a free ride?

The Aldous campaign sends us this update: Aldous will announce on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in front of the Municipal Building in Buena Vista.
He’ll follow up with a 1 p.m. event in front of the Albemarle County Circuit Courthouse.
