State Board of Elections hears from former BotCo supervisor Don Assaid
Mike Sluss has filed an update covering former Botetourt County Supervisor Don Assaid’s complaint to the Virginia State Board of Elections today.
Assaid wants an investigation by the state attorney general’s office of his disqualification from the ballot of the Nov. 8 general election ballot.
Assaid fought a war of words with the Botetourt County commonwealth’s attorney and the county GOP after he was ousted from the ballot. He waged a write-in campaign but was ultimately defeated by Mac Scothorn.
Sluss has more on the state board’s meeting with Assaid in Richmond today.

Assaid’s crusade is pitiful on many levels but as a reader, I want to thank you all for following this and reporting back. One of my biggest peeves at any news is that it is reported and then forgotten. That people might want to know the outcome seems to often be forgotten. Thanks!
Here’s my favorite part–sorry for such a long excerpt:
(beginning of excerpt)
Tyson (Assaid’s helper) blamed the state board for contributing to Assaid’s disqualification, saying its voter registration database indicated that Gimbert was registered to vote in the Valley District as late as the morning of Aug. 23. Had the database been updated to reflect the county’s redistricting plan, Assaid would have had time to gather enough valid petitions to get on the ballot, Tyson argued.
State board Secretary Donald Palmer disputed Tyson’s claim. He said the state board’s database for Botetourt voters was updated on Aug. 17, nearly a week before the filing deadline, and that the board had screenshots and other evidence to prove it.
Booze (Botetourt Registrar) noted after the meeting that Botetourt’s redistricting plan took effect May 24.
“A sitting member of the board of supervisors should know that,” she said. (end of excerpt)
In other words, Assaid really screwed up, but he and his helper don’t want to admit it. Where have we seen that attitude before?
