Perriello signs on with Washington think tank

Tom Perriello

Former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Albemarle County, has a new job, heading up the advocacy arm of a prominent liberal think tank in Washington.

Perriello will become the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, the organization announced today. He is part of a revamped leadership team that will oversee CAP Action’s policy, research, news gathering, and communications efforts.

“I am excited for this opportunity to join an institution that fosters the combination of big ideas and concrete action needed to face today’s economic, environmental, and security challenges,” Perriello said in a news release. “This is a critical moment for our country to return to values of basic fairness and opportunity that are bigger than any election cycle. The Center for American Progress Action Fund is central to generating innovative policy ideas and commonsense communication that can raise the level of policy debates. ”

Perriello shocked the political establishment in 2008 by defeating Republican Rep. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount to win the 5th District seat in Congress. He held the seat for just one term before losing last year to Republican Robert Hurt of Chatham. But Perriello has maintained a strong following in the Democratic Party’s base and had been mentioned as a potential statewide candidate in 2013.

“Tom has a long record of promoting progressive ideas and making real change, and we are excited to bring his experience and integrity to American Progress in his leadership role of the Center for American Progress Action Fund as we continue to play an important role in shaping the nation’s policy debates,” said Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, in today’s announcement.

  1. Hopefully Perriello will return as a candidate for Governor or AG in 2013.

  2. I agree w/dave. Both sides of the aisle need principled men & women to stay in the game. I hope Perriello doesn’t get too comfortable in DC.

  4. WOW, Center For American Progress?? That would be the Progressive George Soros funded outfit that is heck bent on turning the USA into yet another Euro nanny state! Stuff like this is what got Tommiboi run out of office after only one two year term in the House! He should be right at home there with the rest of that Soros bunch who are plotting day by day on how to destroy the USA from the “top down, bottom up and inside out” as that self admitted Communist Van Jones would say!

Lets all hope that they all fail at this endeavor!

  5. Yeah, not like that Koch brothers “funded outfit that is heck bent on turning the USA into yet another” Plutocracy ruled by the wealthy and powerful! The same stuff that brought us this economy and the worst divide in our nation since the civil war. The same stuff that finds 1 in 2 Americans are now poor. God knows we need more people kissing the ring of the wealthy and powerful so they can go on buying and selling candidates to do their bidding. This “bunch who are plotting day by day on how to destroy the USA” and make it over into their image, as their image is the only one that matters. Someday we will yearn for a few good men like Tom Perriello and they will not come because they were destroyed by the people so willing to carry water for the rich back in the day.

  7. The default occupation for a politician. Work for a non-profit. Can’t this guy get a main street job? a private sector job? a business that generates profits, pays taxes? Non-profits in this country are tax scams!

Perriello, show some leadership by actually creating some private jobs for yourself and others.

  8. ” Non-profits in this country are tax scams!”

I assume you include churches in this.

  9. Yeah Roy, no self-respecting person would ever work for a non-profit, would they?
