Gilbert expresses regret for abortion remarks

During today’s debate in the House of Delegates over legislation that would require a women to undergo an ultrasound before an abortion, Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, created a stir when he asserted that most abortions are performed for “lifestyle convenience.”

Tonight, Gilbert has issued a statement expressing regret for his remarks. Here is his full statement:

“I am pro life.  As a matter of conscience and faith, I believe in the sanctity of life and, as a legislator, I have voted accordingly to safeguard it wherever possible.

“Abortion is a sad and deeply serious occurrence.  Individuals on both sides of this issue agree that it is tragic for all involved.  I recognize that few women undergo the procedure lightly. It leaves scars, both mental and physical, that can last forever.  I regret that my comments earlier today on the House floor were insensitive to that reality.

“As this important public policy debate continues, elected representatives of the people — starting with myself — should remember that we are discussing a procedure that is a matter of life and death, and that it is truly heartbreaking.”

  1. Sorry, the callous before will always speak louder than the damage repair after. Too many of you DO believe that lie. You sir, are a jerk.

  2. Todd Gilbert – Written apologies issued after you say something that offends a large part of your voting constituency? Virtually always the cowardly lying way of trying to save votes. You make a deliberate choice to use certain phrases on the legislative floor, then run from them? We all know you meant what you said first time. Whether you’re right or wrong, you meant it when you said it. Now you’re backtracking in a cowardly manner.

  4. You were not elected to vote according to your so-called faith; maybe you should just run for church elder next time. You should vote to uphold the Constitution and existing law. Citizens have the right to determine their own choices without you and your kind trying to force your personal beliefs down their throats. I suggest you resign immediately, renounce your citizenship, and move to the Middle East where your attitude toward personal freedom will be appreciated.

  5. My sentiments exactly, Harold. These politicians that want to force THEIR God and THEIR version of Christianity on citizens should be in church leadership. Leave elected positions to those that will follow the Constitution. We don’t have an east coast version of Joel Osteen yet. Now is their opportunity.
