Kaine comments on state “personhood” legislation; Marshall fires back

Tim Kaine

Former Gov. Tim Kaine, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, weighed in yesterday after the House of Delegates advanced legislation stating that life begins at conception. House Bill 1 is sponsored by Del. Bob Marshall, R-Prince William County, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the Senate.

This issue came up in Kaine’s December debate with Republican Gov. George Allen and Kaine effectively repeated his position in criticizing the legislation yesterday. Here’s Kaine’s statement:

“I strongly disagree with the House of Delegates’ vote to enact personhood legislation.  This reckless proposal, supported by my opponents, including Bob Marshall and George Allen, could threaten access to some forms of birth control for women across Virginia. Even when given the opportunity to reaffirm their support for contraception, Marshall and Virginia House Republicans rejected a measure to create a safe harbor protecting women’s access to birth control.

“Today’s action, combined with George Allen’s support for personhood legislation at the federal level, means Virginians have a clear choice this November.  Whether the Republican nominee is Allen or Marshall, it’s clear both are willing to prioritize extreme legislation that could jeopardize access to contraception.  As a senator, I will fight for affordable and accessible contraception for all women so they can make the best health decisions for themselves and their families.”

Marshall has said that Kaine is misrepresenting the effect of the legislation. He had a quick comeback of his own yesterday.

“When it comes to sex, Tim Kaine can’t think straight,” Marshall said in an interview.

  1. Is there such a thing as contraception after conception? If life does not begin with conception then when does it? 1 week? 2weeks? a month? 6 months? If you want to have legal abortion fine. Just do not justify it by saying “it’s not a life, it’s just a lump of tissue”. Call it what it is and say a woman’s right to her own body includes discarding the life that has begun in her womb if she so chooses.

  2. So when this slap in the face of bill to women’s rights passes I can clam my unborn child on my VA taxes right? I mean he / she is a person that I have to care for as a dependent, right?

  3. Marshall is right at the top of the nutcase list in the GA. The guy is absolutely OBSESSED with sex.

  4. Good point, Keith. After IVF some people probably have a dozen or so “children” in a freezer at the clinic–can they claim those indefinitely tax-wise? After all, the parents are paying for room & board!

Anybody else think Marshall was calling Kaine gay when he said Tim “can’t think straight” when it comes to sex?

  5. All of this CONTRACEPTION nonsense is a straw man. NOBODY is trying to limit contraception.

The Democrats know they have lost the abortion issue, the public is against it by 10 points.

Obama CAN’T run on his record, so they have to create this ridiculous straw man. “The GOP wants to take away your contraception”.

    Nonsense.

    Obama is desperate.

  6. “Nonsense” is believing that contraception is some “straw man” or that it is the Dems that will lose over abortion issues. Time will tell and the nation has decided. You people need to get a message and stick to it, you are starting to look unstable.

For some mandates, against some mandates.

For some government interference, against some government interference.

    For some rights against others.

You support the fetus, not so much the child.

You support the pregnant woman, not so much the mother.

You support the womb occupant, but not the womb owner.

Obama can more than run on his record, he will win with his record. Not so much because it is stellar in this awful, still thrashing economy but because of the instability, insanity, hubris and dishonesty of the TP/GOP.

    Go you!

  8. @6

The dishonesty is with Obama. Remember no mandates that he ran on. Remember him chastising the Supreme Ct. about allowing PAC money in campaigns? Now he wants the PAC for himself. What a liar. Every time he opens his mouth he lies. Whether Libya,Iraq,Egypt this guy never quits the lies. This chump has got to GO!

  9. Oh yes, you would like him to stand on his principles and get beaten by the big money interests the rich can deploy. We WILL change this game eventually, till then, we have to play it the way it is laid out and play to win as if lives depended on it, because they do.

Every time the TP/GOP candidates open their mouths, they lie. So what. If politicians told the truth, no one would ever get elected. You are living, breathing, walking, talking, voting proof that this nation cannot handle the truth and would not grasp it, if it tried.
