Updates on Romney campaign appearance in Salem today

Mitt Romney (AP photo)

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, makes a campaign stop in Salem today at Carter Machinery.

The Roanoke Times has coverage here, including a live Twitter feed. If you’re tweeting from the event, use the hashtag #RomneySalem to get in the feed.

You can see photos that people are tweeting in our Storify stream here.

We won’t attempt to update everything here — best to go to The Roanoke Times page for the Twitter stream there — but here are some highlights:

9:58 a.m.: The line to get in is long, but they’re starting to let in some people. (Rebecca Barnett)

10:10 a.m.: Former congressman Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount — once a Democrat, once an independent, once a Republican, but now the Constitution Party candidate for president — is making use of Romney’s visit to get some attention for himself. He held a news conference in Roanoke today to call on Romney to take a stronger stance on immigration. The Roanoke Times has details here.

10:54 a.m.: The liberal group ProgressVA has put out a release chiding Carter Machinery — the business Romney is appearing today — for benefitting from stimulus funds that the Republican candidate opposes. Carter Machinery has put out a response. You can find details on that exchange here.

11:34 a.m.: ProgressVA clarifies that it wasn’t criticizing Carter Machinery, but Romney in previous release about company benefitting from stimulus money. ProgressVA tells us: “Thanks so much for picking up on our research on Carter Machinery’s benefit from the Recovery Act this morning. I just wanted to clarify one thing (which is probably a result of me not having enough coffee before writing press releases). ProgressVA in no way is criticizing Carter Machinery for benefitting from the Recovery Act. We think its great that Virginia businesses benefitted from the legislation. Our concern is that Mitt Romney is incredibly inconsistent in his positions.”

12:21 p.m.: Reps. Morgan Griffith and Bob Goodlatte making opening speeches. Thank @CarterMachinery for providing facilities.

12:23 p.m.:Goodlatte: “Virginia is the center of what’s going to happen in the country this year …”

12:30 p.m.: The time has come. @CarterMachinery CEO and @MittRomney take the stage to huge cheers.

12:35 p.m.: Romney now speaking.

12:52 p.m.: Romney has finished speaking.

2:16 p.m.: Mason Adams has more coverage of Romney’s speech here.

3:45 p.m.: The Roanoke Times has this photo gallery.

Romney is no Goode, pun intended! Obama and Romney are just two sides of the same trick coin. Wake up!
