Tonight, President Barack Obama will hold an event in downtown Roanoke as part of his campaign for re-election.

I’m so excited to hear the President here in Roanoke. I hope he likes Roanoke as much as us.
I dont think I could care less than I do that this awful president is in town. Be glad when he is back to his old job, community organizer.

I have seen nothing about the pro Romney event going on right now. Come one Roanoke Times. You should be a little less biased, show and or tell about this. It is your job to give the news. Obama is old news!

This president (and I use the term loosely) has divided this country like no other.
I am proud that the USA has a black president. There is only one problem …. we have the WRONG black person as President. This man is by far the worst president of my long lifetime. He had 7.2 % unemployment when he took office, and it was slightly over 8% by July 2009, for which he was not responsible (no new president is responsible for economic conditions for the first 6 months in office). He had a GLITTERING opportunity to knock down unemployment and get the U.S. economy growing strongly again, but has completely blown it. And added about $7 Trillion dollars of debt and forced a health care package down our throats that was deemed unwanted by a majority of Americans in EVERY single public opinion poll before it became law. Unemployment has NEVER been below 8% since June 2009, and is now at the longest stretch of consecutive months in the decades-long history of the BLS statistics. Political analysts claim Virginia is a “battleground” state. B.S. This state is going for Romney, pure and simple. If Obama somehow wins VA., then he will win re-election easily. I don’t see it happening, short of a real scandal or blunder on Romney’s part.
I would rather watch paint dry than watch barry. He is on TV 24/7 saying the the SOSO. He just likes to hear himself talk! Worst President ever! He makes President Buchanan look good.

How much of that debt was caused by paying for Bush’s war? I am sure you remember this war. Bush said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and got thousands of our troops killed. President Obama brought troops home from Iraq.
Hey, Art Hill, what about the out of control spending on companies to create jobs and instead they go bankrupt. what about off shore drilling stopped so Virginia jobs are lost, what about his demonizing the coal industry, what about the 21 new taxes for obamacare that YOU will pay, and what about the tax on the rich that will pay for 8.5 days of government operation. I honestly could care less that he is here! He didn’t go to the Civic Center this time b/c honestly he couldn’t have filled the venue. He has to scale down so it would at least look like a crowd came out to see him. Roanoke City is out tons of money for sponsoring this political stop. Local business is out TONS of money b/c they basically have been shut down for 2 days to “secure” the area for the event. And then all he spouted out were lies. People really need to research the laws and politics in general to know what is going on. If you only read liberal media (ie newspapers) or listen to CNN you are only getting about 1/8th of the story, if that!

Obama promised to “keep the dream alive” for the middle class – unfortunately, with his policies, it’s all just a bad dream for us in the middle class and it’s become impossible for our dreams to become reality. I regret that the President came to Roanoke . . . His visit was not well plan-ed. For a Friday night all the business in the Market Square lost money. To hold his visit in front of the historic fire house #1 was insane. I had rather he be in Washington doing his job, his job is to serve the people now, not worry about a second term. The cost to tax payers here as well as the entire country was money not well spent. I like the man, however not his politics . . . People need to wake up, politics helps no one, Oy Vay may the people of our Country wake up and smell the coffee. This visit helped no one, not Roanoke, not President Obama or his future! He will be a one term President!
I own a business on Market Street and am pleased to say that both Thursday and Friday were better-than-average sales days. I had feared the opposite.

It was a great visit until we left the area and were heckled as we left. I was called a f*g and others were called n****rs. I was not impressed by the “counter rally.” What a disgrace to the human race. Not to mention the huge confederate battle flag (with a gilded cross topping the pole) being flown as we left was a little over the top… The hatred in their eyes was astounding. Did they forget all that talk about Romney’s father marching for civil rights?

I keep seeing the articles comparing the size of Friday’s crowd to the crowd at Romney’s event. That’s worse than apples and oranges – more like comparing iron pumpkins and glass cherries. Why? Because any slob off the street could walk in and see Romney, without going to any extraordinary effort. I waited in line two-and-a-half hours on Wednesday for a ticket (being one of the last six to get one at Peters Creek), and for two more hours last night. As did almost everyone else. All without any assurance that we would get in. If they had not limited the number of tickets (ie, EVERYONE who wanted could come), and had bypassed the Market for a larger venue, how many thousands do you think would have come to see the president? Let’s put it this way – western Virginia doesn’t have a venue large enough.
So please – stop with the juvenile comparisons to Romney’s event, and to the president’s 2008 Roanoke appearance.
As to the comments – the usual laughable trash from the right. I saw “Obama – Worst President Ever” bumper stickers before he’d been in office three months. Just an infantile reaction to that label being affixed to Bush – who, by the way, earned that moniker after his eight ruinous years.

The wealthy don’t have to pay tax on money they spend creating jobs, so it shouldn’t matter when their net income is taxed higher. Unless, of course, they’re not really creating jobs.
Hopefully folks will look past the color of his skin this time and focus more on what he has done for this country (or lack of what he has done). If this country actually takes the time and looks, Romney should win in a landslide. Obama is all sizzle and no steak.

I read some comments “What has he done for us?”. We should rather be concerned about what he has DONE TO us. He is trampling our Constitutional protections from government. Much care went into our Founding Documents to protect us from the intrusion Mr. Obama has imposed upon us, and he is no piker when it comes to spending our tax money on himself and his family, money much beyond the gracious salary he is given. Look at his 100+ golf games, Michelle’s vacations overseas, Las Vegas, etc. All this when unemployment (real unemployment by far exceeds 10%. Give me a break. Some have asked that participation in the visit be used as a protest. I am not confident that news coverage would be interested in more than numbers, ignoring protest alignment. So the imperial president came to our little town. Did he mention that he has yet again taken matters into his own hands which he has no right to do? He has decided that no work or even looking for work is no longer necessary to get welfare. This is in direct conflict with the welfare reform law and the constitution. But then again, his plan is to overwhelm the economy with no work, high dependence on the government and disregard for the rule of law and the constitution in particular. If we don’t get him out, we will soon be in the same shape as Europe. Don’t doubt me. Just do your research and know that this man only wants your fate to be totally in the hands of the government to tell you what to eat, what to drive, where and how to live and most importantly, how to think.

Interesting that Republicans continue to despise the idea of health care reform even as the Iraqi Constitution, written by Republicans in the Bush administration, provides universal health care for all Iraqi citizens (see Article 31).
Interesting how so many people can make judgments about people just by their appearance–such as their income, job status, education, intelligence, etc. I am a retired teacher and my son is a VT employee, and both of us attended the President’s rally. Waiting in line, I met other teachers and many other professionals. Even if there were poor people there, they are just as much a citizen as any of the haters on this site–and Obama is their President too.

America’s defensive abilities are in place and we have not had need to utilize any except when called upon by international pressures. American’s are weary of war and our warriors need to be at the ready but not in theater. Excessive money has been spent on an unfunded war and money should be used for the people stateside. America will have a real comparison and decision to make in November.

Virginia, and the country deserve a better person for President than Obama. He has not lead at all, but has simply dictated to the American people what HE thinks is best for us. He refuses to hear the people’s wishes on health care, instead, he forces us into it, and he calls anyone who disagrees with him anti-American. We can do better. Mitt Romney was working 80+ hour weeks to save the Salt Lake City winter olympics from 1999 to 2002, and he did this public service without pay. Romney’s efforts paid off and the SLC Olympics overcame scandal and their debt to hold a successful Olympics.

Obama’s speech in Roanoke is an admission – this past 4 years have FAILED – people are out of work, economy hasnt grown, incomes are flat. We need a change from Obama’s failed policies and he offers nothing but more tax-and-borrow-and-spend failures.

Obama made a number of mistakes and there is no doubt that Romney, if elected, will do the same. What I can tell you is that, although I did it like President Bush much, and may not like Romney if he were to win, to me they are, regardless, known as President. I will not lower myself to belittle or call names the person who represents who we are to the world. You need to learn a lot about manners and need to get rid of all that hate. As for the armed forces, I respect them, but will not do the same for those who send them to tie for no good reason. There have been at least two things that have disappointed this Democrat about Obama. While I support most everything else, I really hoped that he
1) had instituted a major initiative for gun control. He has really done nothing on that front despite the lies of the NRA to create a boogey man for fundraising purposes. We need him to push for legislation restricting concealed weapon permits, require gun locks on all handguns, make it illegal to take guns into restaurants, bars, churches, government buildings, etc., and restrict ammunition sales, and
2) he needs to have the IRS step up its investigation of churches that are blatantly engaging in campaigning and electioneering. Perhaps the Justice Department with the help of the IRS could move the courts to strip the tax exempt status of the hundreds of churches across the country that participate in politics. This is the one of the largest unenforced offenses going on right now.

I was there to protest Obama. It was my first protest and a learning experience for me. What stood out were the following:
1. All ages were protesting but it was the young who were trying to engage the other side via an intellectual discussion. They knew their history, they spoke on many topics but especially the financial cliff we are currently on. They were trying to reason, trying to have a conversation. Everyone I spoke with is frightened, they see our freedom being eroded, our debt out of control, and an abysmal future for our children and grandchildren.
2. The Obama side – yelling, screaming, shoving their rear ends and middle fingers at us, dancing and prancing, cursing and dismissing anything logical. Their only mantra was “4 more years”. I don’t think they know what he has done to this country. I don’t think they understand the value of the constitution. It was a sad display, one that would make a good ad for Romney.
3. There were also the more refined who rolled their eyes as they rushed to their cars as if we were dangerous. I guess it is easier than considering their ideology may be faulty.
4. The police were out in mass and oddly all positioned on our side of the road. We were a much smaller and less aggressive group than the other side so I found that to be quite odd…much like everything else in the times we are living.
