Biden to campaign in Danville, Wytheville and Blacksburg next week

Vice President Joe Biden.

Vice President Joe Biden’s two-day Virginia campaign swing will start in Danville on Tuesday and include stops in Wytheville and Blacksburg, according to President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.

Biden will appear at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville Tuesday morning before heading to Wytheville. He will visit Blacksburg on Wednesday. The specific locations of the Wytheville and Blacksburg stops have not been disclosed.

The campaign said Biden will promote Obama’s economic plan and contrast it with Republican Mitt Romney’s proposals. Romney also will focus on the economy Saturday on a three-stop Virginia bus tour that will take him to Norfolk, Ashland and Manassas.

So all over the internet, all over the television, all over the radio the story and analysis of Paul Ryan as Romney’s running mate is the news of the day. In Virginia, the fact that he’s going to officially announce it in Norfolk is a slap in the face of McDonnell, who was hoping against hope that he’d be picked. Relevant news all over the place.

But on the RT, the “breaking news” headline still reads “Romney to announce running mate today in Norfolk.” Way to get the scoop. Does the news staff clock out on Friday and just assume nothing happens on the weekend?

    tass,

I’ve updated the blog with a post here if you want to talk about it.

I caught a bug over the last couple of days and spent this morning in bed sick as a dog. I only found about about the selection when I logged in on the BRC to approve comments and saw yours.

I try to stay “on” during the weekends, but with a 4-month-old at home, that’s become much less of a priority since April. I care about our readers on weekends, sure, but our traffic takes a big dip then and if it’s between you and spending time with my son, you’re going to take the back seat. Sorry.

I only posted my complaint on your blog because there’s no commenting on the news articles. I couldn’t say anything directly in response to the completely outdated “breaking news” article! It’s the news articles that should be up to date, I completely understand about the limitations of the blog.

Hope you feel better Mason, and I fully support you spending all the time you like with your child. Always know what is important and a blog is not it!

Tass has a valid point about Roanoke.com however. Very valid.

I agree with Tass. The R/T website has the blogs and news intermingled. The staff blogs should be buried deep into the site. Of course, the “news” and the opinion blogs are just that, opinions of the R/T. A good day of investigative reporting would put most of the R/T staff in their sick beds for a month. Maybe a bi-weekly paper is in order.

#5 I always love these idiotic comments from people about the paper. Without the RT, you’d get nearly zero local news.

I don’t think it is the website or the Roanoke Times that has the news and opinion, or blogs, mingled. I think it is readers who only expect a rubber stamp to their beliefs and opinions.

    @5 johnny:

Hit me with some story ideas. Investigative reporting is the best of what we do, I agree, and it’s something I don’t always get to as much as I’d like. I cover the city of Roanoke, its neighborhoods, and local, state and national politics, so any of those topics are game (though if it’s state or national politics it needs a link to western Va).

    Email me at mason.adams@roanoke.com.

Generally I’ve been pretty good at not getting sick, but this week I was up late working on a story Tuesday, then took over post-2 a.m. baby duty. That combined with a long day shadowing a congressional candidate down in Southwest Virginia on Friday left me open to whatever it is that I’ve come down with.

Hoping to be back in the office for a weekend shift tomorrow, though.

    – Mason Adams
