Senate passes bill allowing mixed beverage sales in Montgomery County

The state Senate today passed legislation that would allow for the sale of mixed drinks on two properties near Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.

Senate Bill 849 would allow the state to issue mixed beverage licenses for  properties at Exit 128 at Ironto and Exit 109 outside of Radford, where the county hopes to attract restaurants. In Montgomery County, only the incorporated towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg now can sell liquor by the drink.

Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke, sponsored the bill, which passed by a vote of 33-6. It now goes to the House of Delegates.

Del. Joseph Yost, R-Blacksburg, is sponsoring an identical bill, which will be heard Thursday by a subcommittee of the House General Laws Committee.
