Roanoke mayor praises transportation compromise
Roanoke Mayor David Bowers said the General Assembly’s compromise on transportation helps clear the way for rail passenger service. Here are his comments:
” With the passage by the Virginia General Assembly … of the long needed, but historic, statewide transportation funding compromise, Roanokers can now be even more assured that the resumption of passenger train service to The Star City is “on track” and one step closer to reality……We can almost hear that “hallelujah” train coming’ round the mountain!.”

Nice quote. Since he’s been to see the Chatanooga Choo Choo I’m suprised he didn’t throw that in. Being the Mayor of Petticoat Junction he was probably doing the Frieght Train Boogie when he heard the news. No more Brakeman Blues for him, ole Casey Jones will be whistelling the Wabash Cannonball before you know it. Let’s just hope this Midnight Special won’t be the Last Train to Clarksville or derail like the Wreck of the Ol 97. With any luck Guvner MickyD will make sure it won’t be a Long train Runnin and leave the Mayor looking like a Desperado Waitin on a Train. I Can Hear the Whsltle Blow 100 Miles.
I like trains, but I don’t want to pay for the transportation of others just to have a train. Rail service has to pay for itself, and N&W made that sound decision long ago. Don’t try to bring back the past with programs that were determined not to be financially feasible. Where is the balance sheet?
