Democrat Keith Wheaton announced his candidacy for the 11th District House of Delegates seat over the weekend, while teacher and community activist Jeff Artis decided against getting in the race.
Artis said in an email that he seriously considered running for the seat being vacated by Roanoke Democrat Onzlee Ware, and had already been pondering a possible 2015 bid. But, he explained, “as a teacher teaching 2 SOL classes, I couldn’t justify to myself leaving school 2, 3 months to work in Richmond while having a substitute teacher get my kids ready for the SOLs. I just can’t do that to my students who I view as my kids.”
Wheaton and Democratic activist Trish White-Boyd formally joined the race Saturday. Roanoke City Councilman Court Rosen and former mayoral candidate Sam Rasoul announced their candidacies last week. Councilman David Trinkle also is considering running for the seat. Sheriff Octavia Johnson, who was voted out of office two weeks ago, is running on the Republican side.
