Hokies lose to State

Mark Berman back here from Blacksburg late Wednesday night after the Virginia Tech men's basketball team suffered an abysmal 70-59 loss to a North Carolina State squad that had been in the ACC cellar entering the game.
"It had nothing to do with offense or defense tonight. We didn't come out with enough energy," said Zabian Dowdell. "They were the first ones to every loose ball, every rebound. They just played harder than us.
"We prided ourselves [entering the game] on playing harder than the next team. It seemed like tonight guys were out there hoping things [would] happen instead of making things happen."
The No. 16 Hokies (16-6, 6-2) dropped out of first place in the ACC, falling into a tie for second with Boston College. It was their first home loss this year.
"I can't really say one thing that, 'Boy we did a good job with that,' " coach Seth Greenberg said.
Losing a game it had been expected to win easily comes at a bad time for the Hokies, who will now enter what figures to be their toughest three-game stretch left this season. Tech visits Boston College on Saturday, hosts Virginia next Saturday and visits North Carolina on Feb. 13.
The Hokies shot just 35 percent from the field,
"We were able to penetrate when we had good spacing. But guys were out there with no spacing," said Dowdell, who had 11 of his 16 points in the first half. "It was hard creating."
Did State do anything defensively to make it tough on the Hokies to shoot?
"I couldn't tell you because I don't think we executed offenisvely enough to figure that out until I look at the film," Greenberg said.

Hokies down at halftime

Mark Berman here from Blacksburg at halftime of the VIrginia Tech men's basketball game, where the Hokies are fortunate to be only down by two points at halftime to North Carolina State.
State, which had lost four of its previous five games, is up 30-28. State led the entire first half, extending its lead over the No. 16 Hokies to 26-16 with 5:22 to go in the half.
Cheick Diakite is the only Tech post player who has provided any inside scoring; he has two dunks. Backup post player Chris Tucker did have an outside jumper.
But Coleman Collins, who had five dunks in Sunday's win at Georgia Tech, is 0-5 from the field. Backup Robert Krabbendam also has been dreadful; he is 0-of-2 from the field.
The Hokies shot just 32.3 percent from the field in the half to State's 50 percent. State also leads on the boards, 21-16, but has hurt itself with seven turnovers.
Zabian Dowdell gave the Hokies a huge lift with 4.3 seconds left in the half with a four-point play. He drained a 3-pointer and was fouled, and made the free throw to cut the lead to 30-28. He has 11 points.
State center Ben McCauley has 12 points, so the Hokies' post players are also playing poorly on defense.
Tech guard Jamon Gordon has also had a bad first half. He is 0-of-5 from the field.

Cavs win on the road

Sports editor Jeff Gilbert had requested a blog to follow the Virginia-Clemson men's basketball game and here it is, more than seven hours after the final whistle.

Halfway through the ride home and without access to my cellphone, much less a wireless connection, I remembered what I was supposed to do.

The morning edition may have arrived by the time readers see this, so here's what I failed to mention: Nineteeenth-ranked Clemson, a 64-63 loser to visiting Virginia, had won 15 of its 16 previous home games and was 11-1 at Littlejohn Coliseum before Sunday..

The Tigers were 8 1/2-point favorites and led 63-49 before being outscored 15-0 over the final 3:54. Virginia scored on its last six possessions, including two 3-pointers by Adrian Joseph.

Virginia had lost 10 straight road games before a Wednesday night visit to North Carolina State, where the Cavaliers prevailed 71-58.

The Cavaliers (13-6 overall, 5-2 ACC) will take a four-game winning streak into Thursday night's meeting with Duke (18-3, 5-2) at John Paul Jones Arena, where UVa is 10-1.

UVa has won 11 of the last 15 games with Clemson, including six of the last seven..

Hokies win at Georgia Tech

Mark Berman here from Atlanta, where Virginia Tech won its third ACC road game of the month. Zabian Dowdell had 23 points to help the Hokies beat Georgia Tech 73-65.
With the Hokies up 62-55, Jamon Gordon was called for a technical foul with 2:07 for giving Mouhammad Faye a forearm push. Gordon said he didn't think it should have been called a technical.
Anthony Morrow made one of two foul shots after the technical, and Georgia Tech kept possession. Zach Peacock sank a jumper to cut the lead to 62-58 with 1:48 to go.
But Dowdell made four straight free throws, and Gordon sank one of two foul shots to extend the lead to 67-58 with 43.8 seconds left.
Dowdell and Gordon combined for 15 assists and just four turnovers.
"We've got a great security blanket," Hokies coach Seth Greenberg said. "With those two guards, Linus doesn't have it any better than I have it. They are just really good players. They are really good, tough, experienced, mature, winning players. They've got great poise, confidence, toughness, and they play off each other."
