Virginia's Monica Wright was named the ACC's Rookie of the Year.
Wright was the league's preseason pick for Rookie of the Year and won the league's rookie of the week award eight times. She started all 29 games for the Cavaliers, averaging 14.9 points and 6 rebounds a game. She led all ACC freshmen in scoring and led Virginia with 67 steals.

Virginia's Lyndra Littles was a second-team all-ACC selection, the league announced on Monday. Virginia Tech's Kirby Copeland was an honorable mention pick.
Roanoke native Khadijah Whittington was a third-team sel1ection, averaging 10.3 points and 10.4 rebounds a game for N.C. State. Whittington, a junior, became the first Wolfpack player to average a double-double since Trena Trice-Hill did it in 1987.
Littles, a sophomore. average 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds a game for the Cavaliers (16-13).
Copeland, a senior, averaged 15.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.9 rebounds a game for the Hokies (17-13).

Virginia and Virginia Tech will each play a rematch against the team they closed out their respective regular seasons with in the opening round of the ACC women's basketball tournament on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.
Virginia (16-13, 5-9 ACC) beat Clemson 86-85 in S.C. today (Sunday) to earn the No. 8 seed. The Cavs will face Clemson (12-17, 4-10) Thursday at 3 p.m. in the 8-9 game. The winner of that game will play No. 1 Duke at 3 p.m. Friday.
Virginia Tech (17-13, 6-8 ACC) finished the regular season in seventh place in the ACC, meaning the Hokies will play No. 10 BC Thursday at 6 p.m. The winner will play top-seeded Duke on Friday at 6 p.m.

Virginia (16-13, 5-9 ACC) beat Clemson 86-85 in S.C. today (Sunday) to earn the No. 8 seed in the ACC tournament. The Cavs will face Clemson (12-17, 4-10) again in the ACC tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the 8-9 game, unless Boston College comes back to beat Maryland this afternoon.
Virginia Tech (17-13, 6-8 ACC) finished the regular season in seventh place in the ACC, meaning the Hokies will play the No. 10 seed, likely BC if the Eagles don't come back against the Terps, in the ACC tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Greensboro.
Duke has already secured the top seed, no matter what happens in its rematch with North Carolina today (4 p.m.). Carolina is already No. 2.
Wake Forest has a lock on No. 12 and Miami is securely No. 11.
N.C. State has clinched a first-round bye, but it is not yet sure whether its No. 3 or 4. The rest of the seedings will be settled today, with defending-national champion Maryland facing the possibility of finishing outside the top four (who all receive byes).

Virginia Tech (17-13, 6-8 ACC) finished the regular season in seventh place in the ACC, meaning the Hokies will play the No. 10 seed in the ACC tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Greensboro.
Virginia (15-13, 4-9) is playing Clemson this afternoon at 2 (at Clemson, S.C.) for the eighth seed. Since the 8th and 9th seeds play each other in the tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m., Virginia's game time is set and the opponent will likely be a rematch with Clemson (12-16, 4-9).
But if Virginia beats Clemson and Boston College knocks off Maryland (unlikely) at 3 p.m. this afternoon, then the Hoos would face BC instead.
Duke has already secured the top seed, no matter what happens in its rematch with North Carolina today (4 p.m.). Carolina is already No. 2.

N.C. State has clinched a first-round bye, but it is not yet sure whether its No. 3 or 4. The rest of the seedings will be settled today, with defending-national champion Maryland facing the possibility of finishing outside the top four (who all receive byes).

I had my first in-person looks at Tech and UVa this week. Don't ask for a prediction on Thursday's game in Charlottesville.
This ACC season has proven that one performance has little to do with the next. Tech and UVa have combined for eight losses, including two to N.C. State (by Tech), one to Miami (UVa) and one to Florida State (Tech).
Both teams have looked great, looked OK and looked bad. When they met in Blacksburg, Tech looked especially great and UVa looked especially bad. Could it go the other way this time? Certainly. However, expect a close game.
UVa is 15-1 at home this year, and Tech is 7-7 away from home.
Posted Feb24, 2007 at 07:46 PM
Other than the fact it was home, Virginia's 75-69 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday was eerily similar to a 64-63 UVa win at Clemson on Jan. 28.
In that game, the Cavaliers outscored the Tigers 15-0 over the final 3:59. On Saturday, Virginia outscored Georgia Tech 13-0 over the final 3:41.
Four days after winning at Clemson, Virginia outscored Duke 10-2 over the final 3:21, setting up overtime in a game the Cavaliers would win 68-66 in overtime.
"I'll just have to look at it all over again," Dave Leitao said after Saturday's game. "It just happened in a blur."
Leitao improved his record to 17-13 in his two seasons as UVa head coach and has now beaten every team in the league at least once.
Virginia, which is 15-1 in its first season at John Paul Jones Arena, has won more home games than any other team in the history of UVa men's basketball.
A statistic that went unnoticed Saturday was Virginia's free-throw shooting. The Cavaliers went 18-of-19 from the line, going 10-for-10 before a Tunji Soroye miss with 4:20 left
. However, Soroye finished 2-for-3 from the line after going 1-for-7 in UVa's previous two games. The Cavaliers were only 17-for-25 on free throws Wednesday in a 68-60 loss at Miami.
In that game, the Hurricanes outscored UVa 7-0 over the final 25 seconds.
When J.R. Reynolds and Sean Singletary had 25 points and 24 points Saturday, respectively, it marked the third time this season in which they have gone over the 20-point mark in the same game.
Singletary had 33 points and Reynolds 26 against American, then Reynolds had 29 and Singletary 27 at N.C. State.

Mark Berman back here in Blacksburg, where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team ran away from Miami, 73-57.
The Hokies (20-8, 10-4) clinched a first-round bye in the ACC tournament.
"That's another day of rest, another day to prepare," said Zabian Dowdell, who had 20 points and eight rebounds. "That's definitely something we look forward to taking advantage of."
Tech also clinched its first 20-win season since 1995-96, the last time it made the NCAA tournament.
"I'm happy for these kids," Tech coach Seth Greenberg said. "I'm proud of them. ... They've done something that people didn't think they were capable of doing."
The final score Saturday would have been even more lopsided had Tech not missed 11 free throws. The Hokies had five blocks and eight steals, and outrebounded Miami 36-34.
"When we get on the glass, ain't too many teams that can beat us," Jamon Gordon said.
"Everybody on their whole team crashed the boards," Miami's Dwayne Collins said.
The game featured more fun dunks by Deron Washington, and a nifty between-the-legs pass by Dowdell.
Tech shot just 39.4 percent from the field in the first half but 68.8 percent in the second half.
"We ran a different offense [in the second half] .. . to get people moving more instead of just standing around, to get some easy penetration," said Washington, who had 12 points. "The zone they ran, I don't think we [were] well-prepared for that. The offense we [were] running was real slow."
"In the first half, we were settling for jump shots," Dowdell said. "In the second half we did a good job of attacking."
Coleman Collins had 10 of his 15 points in the first half. Greenberg didn't play him for the first eight minutes of the second half, opting for Cheick Diakite after Diakite grabbed six rebounds in the first half.
Greenberg praised Diakite and fellow backups Nigel Munson and Chris Tucker, even though none of them scored.
"A pivotal point in that game was Chris Tucker, Cheick and Nigel at the end of the first half," Greenberg said. "They gave us a determination and a focus to get the thing tied back up at the end of the half. .... Cheick gave us great, great energy. He was active around the basket, he rebounded the ball, he gave us a physical presence.
"Chris Tucker gave us very good minutes and that's something I've got to look at."
A.D. Vassallo had 11 points, starting instead of Lewis Witcher for the third time in the last five games.
Gordon had 13 points despite getting poked in the left eye.
"I thought I was going blind," he said.
Miami shot 30 percent in the second half.
"Hands above the ball is a phrase we use when we're guarding shooters," Greenberg said.

Mark Berman here Saturday in Blacksburg, where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team is tied with Miami 32-32 at halftime.
The Hokies are fortunate to be tied because they have not done a good job of executing their offense.
The Hokies scored the final seven points of the half, though. Zabian Dowdell had only scored four points until the final 63 seconds, when he had a basket and a 3-pointer.
Coleman Collins has played well offensively, scoring 10 points. He picked up his second foul and went to the bench with 2:34 left in the half, less than two minutes after Deron Washington went to the bench with his second foul.
The Hokies have five steals, including three by Dowdell. Miami has nine turnovers
Tech went on an 8-0 run to build a 19-13 lead with 9:21 left, but Miami tied the score at 23.
The Hokies can clinch a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament with a win today.
Miami is shooting 45.8 percent from the field to Tech's 39.4 percent.
The Hokies have three blocks.
Denis Clemente, who is averaging 9.4 points, already has 13 for Miami.
Washington and Jamon Gordon are a combined 2-of-7 from the field. Dowdell is 3-of-7.
Posted Feb21, 2007 at 10:59 PM
I know you Tech fans are used to reading what Aaron McFarling has to say about the Hokies, but he couldn't be at Cassell tonight so I tried to fill his rather large shoes. I'm Jeff Gilbert, the sports editor at The Roanoke Times, and these Tech games sure are bigger than they used to be, so here I am.
Some other observations that didn't make it into my column:
1. Markus Sailes played some really strong minutes for Tech. When Jamon Gordon got two early fouls, he came in and played excellent defense and had a couple of nice assists. And he even got in on the dunk show. Tech had nine dunks.
2. Cheick Diakite is going to be one of the best big men in the ACC the next couple of years. Not sure yet about the scoring, but definitely on defense and on the boards. He's not only a leaper, he's a quick leaper.
3. You always hear talk about needing good guard play in the NCAAs. It's not just on offense, but on defense as well that good guard play can carry you from round to round. Tech will be a scary team for anybody because of that.

Mark Berman back here from Blacksburg, where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team thrashed Boston College 79-62 to move into a tie for second place in the ACC.
The Hokies, who had lost to BC six straight times, led by as many as 30 points.
"When we play defense, that's how we're capable of playing," guard Zabian Dowdell said. "Guys were out there scrapping tonight on defense, rebounding the ball."
"When in sync, we're pretty damn good," coach Seth Greenberg said.
Seth Greenberg had been hard on his team in practice in the wake of an 81-56 loss at N.C. State on Sunday.
"I got after them," Greenberg said. "We practiced two days really hard for this game.... The last few days, they had enough of me."
Greenberg talked to his seniors before tonight's game, asking them what they were thinking. He said Dowdell told him, "We have to win." He said Coleman Collins told him, "Coach, we're ready."
BC had drilled Tech 80-59 on Feb. 3 so the Hokies wanted revenge.
"Everybody was more motivated to play this game ... [after] the way they beat us last time," Deron Washington said.
After BC had no trouble with Tech's zone defense on Feb. 3, Greenberg stuck to man-to-man defense this time. BC shot just 38.2 percent from the field.
"This is who we are," Greenberg said. "We've got to get a secondary defense, but this is who we are."
BC forward Jared Dudley, one of the ACC's best players, was 6-of-14 from the field for 15 points after scoring 30 on Feb 3. Most of his points were garbage points. Deron Washington guarded him. Greenberg told him before the game it could be a statement game for him in terms of defense.
"He was magnificent," Greenberg said of Washington. "We did a good job of doubling him."
BC guard Tyrese Rice had 20 points in the first meeting but just 15 on 4-of-10 shooting in the rematch. Most of his points were garbage points as well. Zabian Dowdell guarded him
"Zabian really did a good job keeping Rice in front," Greenberg said.
Washington had 19 points, three blocks and eight rebounds.
"When he's flying around, he's awfully good," Greenberg said.
A.D. Vassallo, who started instead of Lewis Witcher, had 18 points
"We put AD into the starting lineup because we needed a little bit more scoring and we wanted to create some matchup problems, spread the court out a little bit more," Greenberg said.
"I was looking forward to having a good game," Vassallo said. "I was struggling a little bit, shots was not falling in [before tonight]."
Dowdell had 23 points after scoring just nine at N.C. State.
"We were more aggressive tonight," Dowdell said. "Coach .. told me to stay aggressive. I just tried to attack from the gate."
Coleman Collins had nine points and four dunks.
"I was just running the floor. I was getting out on the break full speed. I had my legs today," Collins said. "It was a good game. I got the ball in scoring spots."
None of these Hokies had ever beaten BC before tonight.
"Oh, we knew that," Collins said.

Hi ho, Mark Berman here from Blacksburg, where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team leads Boston College 36-32 at halftime.
The Hokies went on a 14-0 run to build a 29-16 lead with 5:46 left in the first half.
Tech led 36-23 with 2:56 left in the half, but the Eagles ended the half on a 9-0 run.
Zabian Dowdell, who had only nine points in the entire loss to N.C. State on Sunday, has 11 points.
Coleman Collins scored seven points in the first six minutes, when he had three dunks, so Tech may want to find him more in the second half.
Jamon Gordon picked up two quick fouls and went to the bench with 15:48 left.
Jared Dudley, who had 30 points in BC's 80-59 rout of Tech on Feb. 3, has eight points, six rebounds and two fouls. BC is shooting just 40 percent from the field and has been outrebounded 20-15.
Deron Washington and A.D. Vassallo each has nine points. Cheick Diakite had a productive stint off the bench, with five rebounds and three blocks in five minutes
Tech is playing well in a big game; the loser can kiss its hopes of finishing atop the ACC standings goodbye.

Mark Berman back here from Raleigh, N.C., where the North Carolina State men's basketball team thrashed Virginia Tech 81-56 on Sunday.
State (14-11, 4-8 ACC) shot 66.7 percent from the field, including 69.2 percent in the first half.
"We were patient, set our screens and took good shots," State coach Sidney Lowe said. "We got each other open shots. The shots were coming from different areas, from different guys, in different spots. When you're clicking like that, it's nice to see.
"[Tech] made adjustments defensively and switched their screens. We noticed it and were able to take advantage and switch it up."
State shot 73.3 percent from 3-point range (11-of-15), the third-best percentage in State history. The Wolfpack, which had 15 layups and a dunk, swept the regular-season series.
"Some teams got your number," Tech guard Jamon Gordon said, who was the only Hokie to score in double figures (13 points).
"They [were] out there hitting every shot they wanted," forward Deron Washington said. "They just [weren't] missing."
The Hokies (18-8, 8-4) blew a chance to move into a three-way tie for first in the ACC, falling to fourth place instead.
"We tried really hard," Tech coach Seth Greenberg said. "I'm disappointed that we didn't play better. We weren't as active and as alert and as competitive [as needed].
"This was very important to our guys. They were prepared. We practiced well. They had good focus in the walk-through. ... We just didn't play well."
State point guard Engin Atsur had 20 points. He was 8-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Center Ben McCauley had 16 points, including 11 in the first half. He was 6-of-10 from the field.
"We didn't defend the post as early as we'd like," Greenberg said. "We wanted to double him, but he caught it so deep. He kept on laying the ball in. Something had to give. So we went to double him and they made shots."
Guard Courtney Fells had 14 points. Forward Gavin Grant had 15 points. Each was 6-of-9 from the field. Grant was 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Forward Brandon Costner had 13 points, 11 rebounds and two 3-pointers.
"We didn't rotate off of our double-downs at times," Greenberg said. "They've got big wings. They try to isolate those guys. ... They've got a great starting five."
"We didn't have a hand in a guy's face," Zabian Dowdell said. "We [weren't] pressing the passer. We didn't play good enough defense."
Dowdell had just nine points, half his average. He was 2-of-3 from the field in the first half and finished 4-of-5.
"I should've been a big more aggressive," Dowdell said. "I should've made a lot more things happen."
"Courtney took guarding Dowdell as a challenge," Lowe said. "He did a good job."
Tech shot 48.1 percent from the field. Deron Washington was 2-of-8, Lewis Witcher 0-of-4, Nigel Munson 3-of-7 and A.D. Vassallo 3-of-9.
"We missed a lot of easy shots," Gordon said.

Mark Berman here Sunday from Raleigh, N.C., where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team trails 45-33 at halftime to North Carolina State.
The Wolfpack, which made 10 of its first 11 shots from the field, is on its way to a sweep of the regular-season series.
State (13-11, 3-8) is trying to keep Tech (18-7, 8-3) from moving into a first-place tie in the ACC.
State is shooting 69 percent from the field (18-of-26) to Tech's 57 percent. State is also 5-of-9 from 3-point range; Tech is 1-of-4.
State jumped to a 22-11 lead with 12:58 left in the first half. Tech cut the lead to 32-29 with 5:51 left in the half, but State answered with a 7-0 run.
Coleman Collins had two early baskets before going to the bench with his second foul with 15:41 left in the half. He sat out the rest of the half.
Deron Washington had another bad first half. He is 2-of-7 from the field.
Zabian Dowdell needs to look for his shot more; he is 2-of-3 from the field. He didn't score his first basket until there was 7:10 left in the half.
Jamon Gordon has scored 11 points for Tech, but three State players are in double figures already. Ben McCauley has 11 points, while Courtney Fells and Engin Atsur each have 10 points.
Tech needs to recreate that wall around the basket it had against Virginia in order to stop State from driving for easy layups.
Tech also needs some good post defense. Cheick Diakiate and Robert Krabbandam did not provide good defense in relief of Collins.

Mark Berman here on Sunday afternoon from the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.,where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team is getting ready to face North Carolina State.
If Tech (17-7, 8-3 ACC) wins, it will join North Carollna and Virginia in a three-way tie for first place.
The Hokies are attempting to become the first team to win at Duke, UNC and State in the same season since Georgia Tech in 1995-96.
In case you weren't watching ESPN's College GameDay early Saturday afternoon, analysts Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas both said Tech has the potential to reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament.
Posted Feb17, 2007 at 01:54 PM
A pretty quiet atmosphere so far at John Paul Jones Arena as neither team has gotten consistent shooting. UVa shot 34 percent; FSU shot 31 percent.
The hero thus far for Virginia has been Adrian Joseph, who is 4-for-5 from the field and has 11 points. That's helped offset a rough day for Mamadi Diane, who's 0-for-6 from the field. J.R. Reynolds has 10 points to eclipse double-digits for the 15th consecutive games. Sean Singletary needs five more points to match that feat.
The Seminoles, who made six 3-pointers in the half, were led by Al Thornton's seven points and nine rebounds.

Mark Berman here from Chapel Hill, where the Virginia Tech men's basketball team has knocked off No. 4 North Carolina 81-80 in OT
"That was the worst coaching job that I've ever done," UNC coach Roy Williams said. "I was trying to go with mixed lineups there because they were small and didn't want to have Brandan [Wright] chase guys around. I did a poor job. I did absolutely the worst job I've ever done in my entire life. The kids deserve more han that and I told them that."
Zabian Dowdell had 33 points for Tech,. He was 17-of-19 from the free-throw line, faring even better than UNC center Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough, who had 22 points, was 14-of-18 from the line.
But don't forget about Tech freshman Nigel Munson. Deron Washington was fouled with 36.4 seconds left in regulation and limped off the court. Munson entered the game in his place and went to the line and made one of two foul shots to tie the score at 73. That remained the score at the end of regulation.
"I thought I was just going to be subbed in to play defense or something, but when I walked into the game I saw Deron was on the sideline, so I knew I had to shoot the free throws," Munson said. "I just wanted to take a deep breath and knock the free throws down.
"When I missed the first one, I was like, 'I've got to soften this up,' because it was kind of hard. So I just softened it up a little bit and held my release and it went in.
"I'm kind of used to the pressure on the free-throw line, so I knew I had it under control. I'm very happy right now."
Coleman Collins, playing on the anniversary of his father's death from lung cancer, was 3-of-12 from the field. But he had a big basket and free throw with 3:51 left in regulation to start Tech's comeback, and he had the first basket of OT. The basket with 3:51 left in regulation was his first bucket since early in the game.
"I finally hit one," Collins said. "I knew I couldn't miss all day. I knew one of them was going to have to drop, and I'm glad that was the one."
Washington had 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Jamon Gordon had 10 points and four assists.

Mark Berman here at halftime from Chapel Hill, where fourth-ranked North Carolina leads the Virginia Tech men's basketball team 34-30.
The Tar Heels scored a jumper and a 3-pointer in the final 43 seconds to take the lead.
Until the final minute, the Hokies had to be pleased with how they were faring in their first trip to the Dean Dome. They took the lead with 18:53 left in the half and kept it until UNC tied the score at 23 with 5:51 to go.
The big problem for Tech is Coleman Collins continues to struggle offensively. He had an early basket and then missed the rest of his shots. He is 1-of-8 from the field. He does have three rebounds and is playing OK on defense.
Deron Washington has also struggled on offense. He is 1-of-6 from the field. He does have nine rebounds, however.
Jamon Gordon and Zabian Dowdell are a combined 6-of-14 from the field for 15 points. A.D. Vassallo is 2-of-5 from the field; Tech needs to look for him more.
The Hokies are shooting 32.4 percent from the field to UNC's 43.3 percent.
Tech has to be pleased with its rebounding and defense. Tech leads on the boards, 22-20.
Wayne Ellington has 11 points for the Tar Heels.
