The best news for UVa is that quarterback Jameel Sewell did not have a sprained ankle, as originally suspected, but was sidelined by cramps. Peter Lalich might have been ready for the assignment he got Saturday if this had been Week 3 or 4, but this should quiet some of the quarterback controversy. Hitting the road. More thoughts tomorrow. Maybe. UVa-State report #15Posted Oct27, 2007 at 07:58 PMSewell limps off with 7:09 left. Peter Lalich comes in. Misses his first four attempts. Second consecutive three-and-out has the Cavaliers punting with 4:15 left. Weigand hooks it OB at the State 35. This is dire even by UVa standards. Evans to Bowens again, beating Dowling for 28 yards. UVa sure could have used this guy. Looks like this one is over. UVa-State report #14Posted Oct27, 2007 at 07:45 PMDonald Bowens, who picked State over UVa in his recruiting, has now caught his second TD pass to give the Wolfies a 29-24 lead with 7:37 remaining. Two-point conversion attempt misses. Ras-I Dowling is beaten for back-to-back 30-yard receptions. Huge play that will be overlooked was a fumble recovery by UVa following the touchdown that made it 24-23. True freshman Jared Detrick was offside and the Cavaliers had to kick over. UVa-State report #13Posted Oct27, 2007 at 07:37 PMIn game 9, Ras-I Dowling gets theb first INT by a UVa cornerback this season but Cavs have to punt from 33. State takes over at its 40 following a 17-yard Darrell Blackman return. Time remaining: 8:37. UVa-State report #12Posted Oct27, 2007 at 07:22 PMMikell Simpson scores from the 5 with 13:12 remaining to make it 24-23. Stats after three quarters: Total offense -- Virginia 337, State 316 Sewell -- 22 of 39 for 247 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs Evans -- 19 of 36 for 240 yards, 2 TDs Mikell Simpson -- 16-67 rushing, 3-31 receiving State WR Donald Bowens --- 9-144, 1 TD UVa CB Ras-I Dowling -- school record-tying 5 pass break-ups UVa-State report #11Posted Oct27, 2007 at 06:50 PMVirginia's preseason goal was 36-36. That's 36 turnovers forced and 36 sacks. In other words, there of each per game. Midway through the third quarter, it's zero-zero. Finally, Clint Sintim gets Daniel Evans with 7:37 left in the third quarter. Cavs took over at their 43 after a 47-yard Bradley Person punt. UVa-State report #10Posted Oct27, 2007 at 06:39 PMWhat is with Virginia's defense? After giving up 64 yards in the second half against Maryland, the Cavs give up 223 yards in the first half against N.C. State, which then marches down the field on the first possession of the second half to extend its lead to 23-17 on Steven Hauschka's third field goal. Actually, Cavs luck out when Jamelle Eugene stumbles and falls in the open at the 2-yard line. A false start moves the Wolfies back to the 7 and the drive stalls. Halftime stats: Total offense -- Virginia 272, State 223 Quarterbacks -- Jameel Sewell 18-30-2-217, 2 TDs; Daniel Evans 14-25-0-195, 2 TDs. Sewell in the second quarter: 13-of-21 for 165 yards and two TDs. UVa-State report #9Posted Oct27, 2007 at 06:00 PMState goes 75 yards in five plays and 1:31 to make it 20-10 with 1:31 remaining in the first half. State doesn't even have its best receiver, Jon Dunlap, out with an injury. UVa's secondary is a mess and the pass rush has been nonexistent. UVa-Maryland report #8Posted Oct27, 2007 at 05:54 PMSimpson 13-yard reception from Sewell on shovel pass makes it 13-10 with 3:04 left before halftime. First shovel pass of the game. Well-timed. UVa-State report #7Posted Oct27, 2007 at 05:47 PMWolfpack goes up 13-3 on 41-yard field goal by Steven Hauschka, a transfer from Division III Middlebury who is now 9-for-9 on field goals for the year. Hauschka is not listed on the Wolfpack roster in the media guide. UVa-State report #6Posted Oct27, 2007 at 05:34 PMIn case anybody is interested, reserve UVa quarterback Peter Lalich is not warming up. Starter Jameel Sewell has thrown his second bad interception, this one in the red zone. The Wolfpack, ranked 119th out of 119 Division I-A teams in passing efficiency, are now plus-2 for the day. Sewell completed three first-down passes in taking UVa from its 31 to the State 18, then threw three bad passes in a row. UVa-State report #5Posted Oct27, 2007 at 05:23 PMState goes up 10-3 with 13:21 left in the second quarter on a 30-yard Steven Hauscha field goal. Drive stalls when Ras-I Dowling bats down a third-down pass to Donald Bowens, who already had three receptions on the drive and four for the game, one for a touchdown. Dowling, a true freshman, getting a lot of playing time in place of Mike Parker, beaten by Bowens on the first TD. No sign of injured Chris Cook, the starter at left corner in the first six games. UVa-State report #4Posted Oct27, 2007 at 05:16 PMFirst quarter ends with the Wolfpack up 7-3 and driving. Cavs' pass defense is really shaky (we knew that). UVa-State report #3Posted Oct27, 2007 at 04:52 PMChris Gould boots a 23-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter, but it's a wasted opportunity. Cavs get a first down at the State 4 but lose yardage. Uninspired playcalling, if you ask me. A 1-yard to the tight end, following by a low-percentage swing pass to Moe Covington. UVa-N.C. State report #2Posted Oct27, 2007 at 04:43 PMState goes up 7-0 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Evans to one-time Virginia recruiting target Donald Bowens. Lots of blame to go around on this one: Jordy Lipsey for snapping it over Jameel Sewell on Virginia's first offensive play, giving UVa a second and 15 from its 6, Sewell for throwing into triple coverage, Maurice Covington for not making sure the pass went incomplete and Mike Parker for letting Bowens get behind him. Mikell Simpson starts at tailback -- UVa's fourth different starting tailback in as many weeks. Tight end Tom Santi is in uniform but hasn't played in UVa's first two series. He might just be here because he's a captain. UVa-State report #1Posted Oct27, 2007 at 04:14 PMLess than 20 minutes remaining till game time at Carter-Finley Stadium. My 12-year-old picked up a ticket from the first scalper he saw -- $30 for a $42 ticket. Don't know what that says. Not a cloud in the sky. A little bit of wind. Temperature is 75 degrees. Already we've seen Wake Forest thrash North Carolina 37-10. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Deacs (6-2 overall, 4-1 ACC) crash the polls this season. Will it be a battle of Top 25 teams? Hokies-Boston College postgame thoughtsPosted Oct25, 2007 at 08:32 PMPOSTGAME THOUGHTS: I'm reading through these previous entries, and I'm still stunned. The Hokies won this game, right? Right? IN-GAME POSTS -Pick up your jaws. A holding penalty negates a touchdown pass by Matt Ryan and pushes the Eagles back to the edge of field-goal range. Ryan responds by scrambling to his left and floating a 24-yard touchdown pass to Andre Callender. With :11 remaining in the game, BC leads 14-10. -Oh, my. With :58 remaining, BC is in field-goal range. But the Eagles no doubt want more. They've got it first-and-10 at the Tech 26. Stay tuned... -BC recovers the onside kick, and this place is as quiet as it's ever been. The Eagles take over at their own 34 with 2:07 to play, trailing 10-7. -We've got a ballgame. Boston College scores on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Rich Gunnell, and the extra point makes it 10-7 Tech with 2:11 to play. That was the Ryan we expected to see all night, driving the Eagles 92 yards in nine plays. BC has two timeouts left. -Matt Ryan is intercepted by D.J. Parker on the first play of the drive. Tech takes over at the BC 31 with 6:01 remaining, still leading 10-0. -BC's running out of time, but the Eagles get the ball back at their own 20 and will try to get something going. With 6:05 left in the game, it's still 10-0 Tech. -Third quarter ends with Tech crossing into BC territory and looking to add to a 10-0 lead. Your stars thus far have been the big guys along Tech's defensive front, particularly Chris Ellis and Orion Martin. They've made Matt Ryan look like Buddy Ryan. -Huge penalty -- and a questionable one, to be sure -- on Dustin Pickle roughing-the-punter. Didn't appear on replays to be deserving of a personal foul, but that's what the officials called. It was an automatic first down for BC on fourth-and-31. Tech's defense comes through again, however, forcing another punt. With 1:59 left in the third, Tech has the ball up 10-0. -A 44-yard field goal attempt by Jud Dunlevy is good. With 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, it's 10-0 Hokies. -Both teams have traded punts. Tech takes over at its own 5-yard line leading 7-0 with 11:44 remaining in the third. -An interception by a diving Brandon Flowers brings a swift end to BC's first drive of the third quarter. The call was reviewed and upheld. With 14:22 remaining in the third, Tech leads 7-0 and has the ball on its own 42-yard line. -Ryan Shuman has a high right ankle sprain and is out for the game. X-rays were negative. Beau Warren is in at center. -HALFTIME THOUGHTS: Hmm...very strange. The Hokies have the ball at midfield, and instead of taking a shot or two downfield to try to set up a field goal, they elect to let the clock run out and head to halftime with a 7-0 lead. Granted, they were facing long yardage thanks to an illegal-block-in-the-back penalty, but there was still an opportunity there. -Heisman Trophy? Matt Ryan isn't making a very strong case today. Ryan throws three straight incompletions, then throws it away on fourth down after getting heavy pressure from Barry Booker. The Hokies hold, and with 2:05 remaining in the half, they'll start at their own 24 leading 7-0. -Fumbled snap on first down gives the ball back to BC at the Tech 19. We'll see if the Hokies can hold here. -Defensive end Orion Martin comes up big again with a sack of BC quarterback Matt Ryan. A sack on third down pushes BC out of field-goal range, and the Eagles punt it into the end zone for a touchback. With 2:42 remaining in the half, still 7-0 Tech. -The rain is really coming down now after a brief respite, and it seems to be affecting the receivers. BC tight end Jon Loyte fumbled twice after catches, but the Eagles recovered both. With 3:55 remaining in the half, Tech leads 7-0 but BC is driving with a first down at the Tech 30. -An 8-yard pass from Sean Glennon to Eddie Royal has the Hokies on top 7-0 with 10:41 remaining in the second quarter. The call was reviewed and upheld, as officials ruled that Royal had his left foot inbounds. Nice drive there for Tech -- 16 plays, 91 yards, chewing up 7:13. Tech picked up three big third-down conversions, including a 12-yard scramble by Glennon. -Tech center Ryan Shuman has a right leg injury and is being taken for X-rays. -Tech center Ryan Shuman helped off the field. We'll get you an update ASAP. -Neither side has been able to sustain anything thus far, though BC has won the field-position battle, backing the Hokies inside their 10-yard line twice. Tech faces a big third-and-9 near midfield. -The Tech defense has shown up thus far, getting good pressure on quarterback Matt Ryan. Tech defenders have had their hands on three possible interceptions but haven't been able to haul them in. By now I'm sure you've heard that Sean Glennon will start at quarterback, which should come as little surprise. Tyrod Taylor is dressed and cleared to play. The Hokies are favored by 3 with the over-under set at 42.5. Apparently EEI, the big talk radio station in Boston, called out the hicks from The Roanoke Times for overwhelmingly picking Tech in the Fearless Forecasters (only one staffer picked BC). Personally, I was surprised by the consensus, too, but keep in mind that Tech is favored. Hey, at least they're talking about the game up there this time. I was driving to the BC stadium last year for the Thursday game between two ranked teams, and EEI was all abuzz about the big story of the day: The Patriots had picked up some no-name lineman off waivers. With the Red Sox playing tonight, it's hard to imagine many Boston-area televisions will be tuned to this one. Anyone worried about a sloppy field should not fear. The vacuum system under the Bermuda grass has been cranking for the past 36 hours, and it can handle up to 16 inches of rain per hour, according to Tech officials. The Cavaliers had lost Alvin Pearman to a torn ACL the previous week at Penn State and turned to Marquis Weeks, who, like Simpson, was a seldom-used sophomore trying to find a niche. Weeks got the start against the Wolfpack and finished with 19 carries for 129 yards. It was the only 100-yard rushing game for Weeks, who, like Simpson, was a SuperPrep All-America running back from Pennsylvania. Weeks, a terrific kickoff returner at one stage, finished his UVa career as a starting safety on the 2004 team.c It will be interesting to see where Simpson's career goes from here. His 271 all-purpose yards in an 18-17 victoory at Maryland was the sixth-highest total in school history. Thomas Jones holds the record with 331 (221 rushing, 110 receiving) against Buffalo in 1999. Maryland-UVa #6Posted Oct20, 2007 at 11:01 PMTotal offense after three quarters: UVa 309, Maryland 189. Simpson wiuth 5:39 left in the game: 119 yards receiving, 92 rushing. Add another 15 receiving UVa-Maryland #6Posted Oct20, 2007 at 10:43 PMAdd another sack for Chris Long and a safety that cuts Maryland's lead to 17-12 to end the third quarter. It's followed by another lackluster return for the Cavaliers, this time by Vic Hall, giving the Cavaliers possession at their 34 to start the fourth quarter. If you ask me, a quarterback change is in order, but nobody up here in the pressbox agrees with me. UVa-Maryland #5Posted Oct20, 2007 at 10:28 PMSewell overthrows again with a guy open along the sideline on third-and-7 from the Maryland 40. Gould's punt spins out at the Maryland 3. Let's see what the Cavalier defense can do with it, down 17-10 with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter. Sewell's decision-making (intentional grounding was his latest faux-pas) and inaccuracy makes you wonder why they don't try Lalich.. UVa-Maryland #4Posted Oct20, 2007 at 08:58 PMThink Friedgen knows how to attack the 3-4. Maryland keeps losing O-linemen and is blowing Virginia off the line. Jermaine Dias has been in the backfield in position to make big plays twice and has fanned, Terps up 14-3 after Lance Ball's eighth TD of the season. Keion Lattimore's rushing TD was his ninth. UVa-Maryland report #3Posted Oct20, 2007 at 08:44 PMFinally, somebody gets a defensive stop. Virginia holds Maryland on downs late in the first quarter but Cavs trail 7-3 after Chris Gould misses a 32-yarder. Mikell Simpson has four receptions and a 6-yard run for the Cavs. UVa Report #2Posted Oct20, 2007 at 07:16 PMJunior wide receiver Maurice Covington is in uniform and participating in drills for the first time since suffering a broken hand Sept. 15 at North Carolina. However, the dress list does not include RB Cedric Peerman, FB Rashawn Jackson and CB Chris Cook. And of course, WR Kevin Ogletree (see previous post) is not in uniform. UVa-Maryland report #1Posted Oct20, 2007 at 06:07 PMNeed to set the record straight. WR Kevin Ogletree is NOT on Virginia's dress list for the Cavaliers' football game tonight atn Maryland. He never was. Don't know how I left the word "not" out of Saturday's story. Can't imagine that an editor removed it, so just assume that I screwed up. Unless Ogletree found a way to College Park and talked himself into the lineup, he's not playing. UVa-UConn final thoughtsPosted Oct14, 2007 at 12:17 AMVirginia football coach Al Groh was unusually candid Saturday night following a 17-16 victory over Connecticut, allowing as how a third-quarter interception by Jameel Sewell might have warranted a quarterback change if it had come earlier in the game. Back-up quarterback Peter Lalich hasn't played in the last three games, which calls in question the decision to use him as a true freshman, but Groh wasn't going to put him in a 14-13 game. Maybe earlier in the season, when UVa was coming off a 23-3 loss to Wyoming in the opener, but the Cavaliers have a record (6-1) to protect now. I also found it interesting to hear Groh say he might have been inclined to go for a touchown on fourth-and-goal from 2 with the Cavaliers trailing 16-14, but he was effected by the finish of the Pitt-Navy game on Wednesday night, when the Panthers went for a touchdown on a fade pattern on fourth-and-goal from the 2 on overtime. The pass failed and Navy prevailed. "You could have lost the game right there," said Groh after Chris Gould kicked the game-winning touchdown. Your 43-14 final...Posted Oct13, 2007 at 07:50 PMThe wait is over. Virginia Tech put up 445 yards of total offense in a win over Duke today, finally displaying some of the potential the Hokies have repeatedly promised they've had. The hero -- surprisingly -- was backup quarterback Sean Glennon, who relieved an injured Tyrod Taylor early in the second quarter and threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor left the game with a high ankle sprain. He was wearing a boot and leaning on crutches after the game. The prognosis is blurry -- trainer Mike Goforth declared Taylor day-to-day but said it will probably be at least five days before the team will really know enough to speculate whether he can play against Boston College a week from Thursday. Glennon's performance was encouraging in either event. And the offensive line, bolstered by the addition of Ed Wang, did a better job with pass protection. Tailback Branden Ore is still scuffling, however. He rushed for 37 yards on 17 carries. Brett Warren, making his first start in place of injured linebacker Vince Hall, led the team in tackles with 11. He also had a sack, three tackles for a loss and an interception. Not a bad pinch-hitting performance. That's all for tonight. We'll have plenty of coverage on this one in Sunday's paper and on roanoke.com. And be sure to join us Oct. 25, when the Hokies take on BC in an attractive interdivisional matchup. It's on the UVa offensePosted Oct13, 2007 at 06:16 PMTony Ciaravino's 24-yard field goal with 8:06 left puts Connecticut ahead 16-14. UVa defense has held the Huskies to a 6-yard touchdown drive and three field goals. UVa has had four second-half possessions and four first downs. Jameel Sewell threw behind WR Dontrelle Inman in first-down territory on UVa's last drive. Big play on last UVa drive was a hold on OL Will Barker that wiped out a possible UVa second-and-1 at the UConn 41. UVa-UConnPosted Oct13, 2007 at 05:59 PMChris Long sack forces UConn to punt. UVa halftimePosted Oct13, 2007 at 05:02 PMJamaal Jackson fumble recovery at the UVa 4-yard line with 53 seconds left in the half enables Virginia to go into the locker room up 14-6. UConn 6, Virginia 0Posted Oct13, 2007 at 03:44 PMBlame this one on Jameel Sewell's receivers. After TE John Phillips failed to come up with a tough catch at the UConn 25, converted cornerback Chris Gorham allowed a ball to go through his hands that Dahna Deleston returned 20 yards to the 46-yard line. A 22-yard pass from Tyler Lorenzen to Larry Taylor sets up a 45-yard Tony Ciaravino field goal. Now Andrew Pearman fumbles the ensuing kickoff and UConn takes over at the 13. After picking up 9 yards on first down, Huskies have to settle for a 21-yard Ciaravino FG. Tyrod Taylor's right foot in a boot...Posted Oct13, 2007 at 03:10 PMHe's on the sideline with crutches. The Hokies lead 43-14 with 6:19 remaining. Pre-game at VirginiaPosted Oct13, 2007 at 02:50 PMThere's a nip in the air under the press box overhang at Scott Stadiu, where the full Virginia squad has assembled for warmups. Cedric Peerman, the ACC rushing leader until he was injured last week at Middle Tennessee State, is in streetclothes and using crutches at the middle of the feet. There is a boot on Peerman's injured right foot and he is not putting any weight on it. Makes you wonder if Peerman will be out more than one week. Injured offensive tackle Eugene Monroe is doing calisthenics with the rest of the team but that happens every week. Wide receiver Maurice Covington is not in unifor, nor is cornerback Chris Cook. Halftime thoughts: Virginia Tech 34, Duke 7Posted Oct13, 2007 at 01:55 PMThis is how it was supposed to look all season: Ed Wang in at right tackle, Sean Glennon flinging the ball to his veteran receivers, the line holding its own. Glennon, who relieved injured Tyrod Taylor with 11:51 remaining in the half, couldn't have looked much better. He completed 9-of-11 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, helping the Hokies turn a 13-7 lead into a 34-7 blowout. He also showed a much better knack for eluding the rush than he did in his one-plus week as a starter earlier this season. Taylor has a high right ankle sprain. He will not return today. We'll be sure to get as much information as we can from Tech's medical staff after the game. Branden Ore continues to struggle, gaining 16 yards on nine carries. Left tackle Duane Brown got kicked in the shin late in the half, but he walked off under his own power and should be fine for the second half. More later... Taylor will not return...Posted Oct13, 2007 at 01:31 PMRight high ankle sprain. With 5:42 left in the second quarter, it's 34-7 Hokies. Details at half. |
