Virginia Tech goes back to 2-QB system
Apparently red isn’t a very becoming color on Tyrod Taylor. At least in Frank Beamer’s eyes.
Following Saturday’s upset loss to East Carolina, Beamer announced at his Tuesday news conference that Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor will both see time at quarterback from here on out.
Beamer would not say who would start Saturday’s home opener against Furman or how he will use either quarterback.
The plan going into the season was to play Glennon, a fifth-year senior, and redshirt Taylor, a sophomore. But Beamer said Tuesday that the overall inexperience of the offense made it necessary to get another playmaker in the backfield. He said this wasn’t an offense that could throw it 40 times and win. Taylor’s running ability will give Tech more options as it did last year when Taylor rushed for over 400 yards.
Beamer said he informed Glennon of the decision Monday and that Glennon was very disappointed. Taylor is excited, Beamer said. Neither quarterback will be available for interviews this week.
Glennon threw two interceptions in Saturday’s 27-22 loss to East Carolina.

well there’s something to look forward to. Now if we can only get rid of Brian Steinspring!

That’s good news!! Hope they can work something out to benefit the offensive scheme. If this is just a rebuilding year, so be it. The home schedule is less than impressive anyways. With an o-line that works better with a mobile QB, we may see an upside to this 2-back system, as long as Taylor does not get injured and we end up right back where we were last year.
Comment by Danny — September 2, 2008 @ 1:44 pm
Can anyone believe this? Beamer is making a major mistake. What about the blocked punt and lack of tackling on defense. Tech will not win with the 2 QB system. You can almost hang the Orange Bowl game last year on Tyrod. The int. he threw in the 2nd quarter gave Kansas all the momentum they needed to get it done. Hang in there Glennon. Maybe when you make it to the next level, the OC there will take some more responsiblity instead of playing the blame game.

THANK GOD! Fire Stinespring & give Glennon a clipboard.

What VT really needs is a NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. All the top teams have gone to the spread offense. Tech has gone to the SAME OLD SAME OLD! Our opponents must love us, they know we will be running the same plays year after year.
Comment by JIM HUTCHINSON — September 2, 2008 @ 2:12 pm
This has the makings of another disaster. Look at the stats from last year. Look who pulled the Duke game out. Look who got hurt when he got hit last year.
If he’s willing to throw away the redshirt for this year we will be hurting even more down the road.
Comment by Watcher — September 2, 2008 @ 2:25 pm
This is good news… only if Tyrod plays and ONLY Tyrod plays. Glennon should be the backup. He is just NOT GOOD. Anyone who thinks he is needs to open their eyes. No, Stinespring as our OC doesn’t help him, but for a 5th year senior? No, he is far from good.
Comment by Taylor — September 2, 2008 @ 2:27 pm
I hope its Tyrod’s job from here on out. Glennon has had his chances and done nothing with them. Time to let him go.
Comment by Jeff Alcusky — September 2, 2008 @ 2:30 pm
Glennon will never make it to the next level!!! He tried and they didn’t want him. He better take that education for all it’s worth because after this year he’s done with football. And no I don’t think they should have a two quarterback year, they should start Tyrod and havd Cory at back up. Let Sean watch the game from the stands.
Comment by hokiegrl — September 2, 2008 @ 2:31 pm
What they need is someone to teach the receivers how to run the right route not a new quarterback! If they would do that Sean Glennon would be fine.
Comment by Hokie Fan — September 2, 2008 @ 2:33 pm
Playing T-mobile is a band-aid solution without addressing the real root cause of the offense’s problems, the offensive coordinator. I blame Beamer for not recognizing this deficiency and being blindly loyal. One day, we won’t have Bud Foster to counter balance to incompetence on the offensive side of the ball. Those will be dark days in Blacksburg.
Comment by Random Thoughs — September 2, 2008 @ 2:38 pm
I think it’s time to accept the truth, Shaun cannot handle the pressure of leading the team. I do think he is a good athlete and person, but he has trouble sealing the deal. Tech needs to run the ball, and pass out of necesity. Shaun has not matured enough as a quarterback for Tech to live off of the passing game, or at least not in real game situations. I’m sure in practice he is a good quarterback. He was a very good quarterback in live scrimmages–I know, I was there–, but where the rubber meets the road in real games,he lets the pressure get the best of him. Either calm down Shaun, or Go Tyrod! Shaun is a good guy, but being a good guy does not neccesarily win games for you, but A good quarterback does!
Comment by Methodist Preacher — September 2, 2008 @ 2:43 pm
I know. Stinespring is painful. He is just plain horrible. I think Beamer knows it too, but is too loyal to fire him? Well, it’s ridiculous because we can’t get to the next level with him calling the plays.
Comment by Taylor — September 2, 2008 @ 2:47 pm
get rid of Brian Steinspring!
Comment by VT — September 2, 2008 @ 2:50 pm
Glennon sucks. Point blank!!! Sat. the hokies needed a playmaker at QB and Gennon was no where to be found in the 2nd half.
Comment by HAPPY HOKIE — September 2, 2008 @ 2:51 pm
The only reason not to use a 2-QB is if you bench Glennon for good. He’s had his chances. He doesn’t create anything and the best you can hope for is that he doesn’t lose the game for you. Like throwing a pick rerturned to the 1 when you are up 14-0. I’m glad to see Tyrod back.
Comment by hokiecat — September 2, 2008 @ 2:53 pm
Does anyone remember the Orange Bowl. Tyrod’s pick changed the game. Give Glennon a break. Start with Stinespring and Newsome. The O line has been horrible since Newsome took over that job. have we been able to run the ball for 3 years now? the answer is no. big mistake playing Tyrod this year. Redshirt him and we have him for at least 2 more years. Now we may just have him for one more year after this year. Who is waiting in the wings? Noone right now.
Comment by darkday — September 2, 2008 @ 3:13 pm
Give Glennon a break?! I think we have given him A LOT of breaks. He is a fifth year senior for crying out loud. As mentioned before, it’s not all Glennon’s fault. Stinespring is horrid and our O-line isn’t good, but since those things aren’t going anywhere good we can’t play Glennon. It just isn’t working.
Comment by Seriously — September 2, 2008 @ 3:37 pm
I don’t care who’s QB. The offensive scheme is just not working. I’d like to see the offense put points on the scoreboard and not so much run time off the clock. Tech has been in the habit of getting a lead and gettin’ comfy in the second half. That’s backfired time and time again. The offense needs to help the D by making first downs and holding on to the ball. Keep the foot on the gas and don’t ease up.
Comment by Patrick — September 2, 2008 @ 3:40 pm
I think this is a mistake. They need to either give the team to Taylor for good, or red-shirt him as planned. Even with that, the QB fiasco is not their main problem. The Hokies got beat up in every aspect of the game Sat. Glennon was on the bench when that punt was blocked, and ECU pasted the D with 369 yds. of offense. Had it not been for the two plays by Virgil, this would have been an ugly loss indeed.
Comment by Leonard — September 2, 2008 @ 3:41 pm
darkday….did you imply that Glennon will see the next level, as in NFL level? LOL!
No way that will happen.
And in the Kansas game, Beamer got OUT-COACHED, plain and simple, end of story. Stinespring made his mistakes too to help Kansas out but in the end, Beamer is to blame for the Kansas loss. He’s the boss. If he can’t see that Stinespring calls a bad offensive game by now, thats on him.
Good to have you back Tyrod!
Comment by Hokie Critic — September 2, 2008 @ 3:48 pm
Thank God!! The sun will shine again in Blacksburg and on the road too!! this will fix one problem..now about the offensive coach!! Don’t even get me started!!
Let’s GO Hokies!!
Comment by VT Happy Girl — September 2, 2008 @ 3:53 pm
The Offence needs quick execution; ECU had ample time to stuff us. I am a loyal Hokie, from Class of ’63, and confident that we will move foward from this loss.
Comment by Roy Lucas — September 2, 2008 @ 3:59 pm
Tyrod should be the man. He brings mobility as the extra dimension. Glennon had his chance and doesn’t have it, plain and simple. Get rid of Springstein. He is not creative enough to make it in today’s football world.
Comment by Old Hokie — September 2, 2008 @ 4:26 pm
A step in the right direction but addresses the symptom and not the cause. Beamer must move away from Stinespring and bring in a OC who is a peer in performance to Foster. Until we do this we will always be a nice story but not reach our potential.
Comment by gdmarz — September 2, 2008 @ 4:27 pm
Let us not forget that Sean was the MVP of the ACC Championship game. With that thought, let’s look at the real problem. We need a OC!!! How can anyone call a pass play when you are up 14-0 late in the first half and deep in your own territory? Let’s not hang #7 for this. It was a miserable call. Why pass when you could run, eat the clock, punt and make them go 60 yards instead of 15. Oh, yes, you are right, they get the ball with the 2nd half kick off. You talking about changing momentum!!!
Now, along comes T2. His mobility alone will allow the moron OC to look good. Is his arm any better than #7? Maybe not. Smarter? Who knows. Agility? No contest.
Also don’t forget that 2 QB’s got us to the ACC Championship and seemed to compliment each other very well.
Comment by Joe — September 2, 2008 @ 4:34 pm
Agree with almost all that’s been said except busting on Sean. When we have a running game that the D has to respect, and when the O line gives him time, he’s fine. But looks like O line not as improved as we hoped, and combine that with inexperienced RBs and all new receivers, and it’s just too much at once for him to overcome. TT gives us the extra dimension that keeps the D honest. The 2 QB system worked well last year and will again now – makes the oppossing DC have to plan for both types of O, which means neither gets as much attention as needed. Let’s lay off Sean and root for both the TT.

Comment by deek67 — September 2, 2008 @ 5:14 pm
Here’s what I see.
I think Tyrod should see the field. Plain in simple he is the most proven play maker on the field. He makes things happen. Glennon is a good qb, don’t take that from him, he just does not fit at tech, and I believe it is because of the OC. When having a multi dimmensional qb, he makes things happen, which makes Stinespringer look good. Glennon can’t do that cause he is a traditional qb, who will only look average under our offense. If Glennon was at UCLA, USC, Texas Tech, BC, all these places with offensive Guru’s, he would be on top of the world.
I think the 2 qb system will work.
Comment by zach — September 2, 2008 @ 5:30 pm
I am glad to see us go back to the two man system, and the only way we use a single quaterback is if Tyrod is the man. Glennon is a nice kid but not a good quaterback. Anyone can look good in practice and that is why I think they have stayed with Glennon. Next what are we going to do with Steinspring? A fifth grader can figure out his play calling, if we are going to be a championship team, we need an offense that can score!!! Plus have the killer attitude to go with it>
Let’s GO HOKIES!!
Comment by Amit Suri — September 2, 2008 @ 5:30 pm
We need a new offensive coordinator. Steinspring was bad when he started and I think he actually has declined since then. No other team in Div 1 football would allow him to call their plays. Beamer you are ruining your reputation and the Tech program by sticking with this amateur.
Comment by Eric Loberg — September 2, 2008 @ 5:31 pm
Great comment deek, I guess you were impressed by your teams effort Saturday afternoon? Talk about no talent. Typical Hootiville comment.
Comment by Doug — September 2, 2008 @ 5:39 pm
a UVA fan talking trash? last year IN CVILLE, didn’t glennon pass for 260 yds. vs you guys even though your D still had chris long and didn’t tyrod outrun your D for 2 rushing TD’s.???
8 of the past 9 and 4 straight. try beating VT again before talking smack.
chris long spoke very highly of tyrod after the game…whose opinion matters more, a top NFL draft pick or an idiot like yourself?
thank you, come again.

I would agree with comments
that Glennon is too slow and
Steinspring is uni-dimensional in the offense.
Too predictable makes it easy for other defenses. Fosters defense pretty bad
against short finesse passes
and passes to backs. Steinspring needs to improve or exit. Diversify offense!

Why is Glennon playing he s$%$%.Glennon shouldve even played. We all no that Tyrod is better.Put Glennon on the on the bench and let Tyrod take over.
Comment by Dustin — September 2, 2008 @ 5:55 pm
The OC must go!!!! I have seen High School Teams with better play calling. A pass that close to half- time is ridiculous. Can you say Chris Beatty, Percy Harvins old coach, now with West Virginia.
Comment by ROB — September 2, 2008 @ 6:25 pm
Glennon should start this year.
Here is why.
This is clearly a rebuilding year.(Which I never thought I would say about VT)
Glennon isn’t a very good QB. I’ll go with mediocre….def. won’t make it to the next level.
So let him get beat up on this year why the kids learn and Tyrod has a chance to season.
Then let 09 be the year.
Comment by Hokies make me cry — September 2, 2008 @ 6:29 pm
I did not like Ricky Bustle at OC. I REALLY don’t like Stinespring as OC. Bud Foster has had to bail this team for the past 8 years. Well, now, he has a green defense. He has them playing better than Stinespring has a more experienced offense – excepting receivers. I want to see new blood in the offensive coordinator’s position. Look, I am no coach, but much of the offensive playcalling seems less than optimal. It was only due to Foster’s defense that we were not beat worse. ECU was the better team.
I am tired of opposing defenses completely stifling us. There were bright spots in this offense. I think Glennon is fine as a QB. He cannot do it all by himself. Taylor cannot do it all by himself. The closest to come to that was Mike Vick. Regardless of the messes he got himself into later, he was a special player for us. They do not come along very often. We need to stop trying for a QB who can do it all, and get to the other 10 men that can elevate a so-so QB if they play well. ECU had a good QB, but he is turned into a great QB by his OC and his other 10 guys. VT on offense strikes me like a gambler wanting to hit that one big win instead of applying themselves to be a cohesive unit. Bryan Randall was very good for our team, but he had a better offense than Glennon does now.
Frank, please, I know you probably feel like Stinespring is like a brother and you have immense loyalty to him. He is NOT doing the job. For whatever reason, he is not near as good an OC as Bud Foster is a DC. You need an Offensive Bud Foster.
Comment by David — September 2, 2008 @ 7:28 pm
Fact is — Sean didn’t lose the game. VT lost the game — I think it is the best move to take the shirt off, but honestly, we were lucky to be up by 2 with 2 minutes left…special teams, offense, and defense lost the game…With a good O-Line Sean is a very strong QB — Beamer’s right though we need something else to fall back on…I feel for Sean right now, because he is a good kid who tries his hardest!
Comment by VTGrad — September 2, 2008 @ 7:42 pm
I too was at the game Sat and was as upset as the next Hokie fan of the performance in both the Offense and Defense. We (Hokie Fans) have become use to winning. We all see the writing on the wall that this is going to be a LONG YEAR!! Being a die hard Hokie Fan and alumni I have to agree with all of the comments. However, I have never been a Glennon fan!! The reason for this is the simply fact we haven’t had a O line designed for him. He can’t move, has no ability to recognize pressure (hense all of the fumbles from his blind side) and makes rookie mistakes. Did someone say he is a 5th year player? No, I am not a professional but Glennon will be watching Sunday Football on his TV like the rest of us!!! With that said, Taylor will only put a band aid on the bleeding at VT. We need a better OC. I would rather see him (Taylor) red shirt and suffer the losses this year to keep him 2 years. Maybe the O line will catch up!! I am for loyalty but when it effects the entire program, one has to be realistic!!! I am never one to jump on a band wagon for firing coaches but we have seen the proof in the pudding with our OC. Bud is one of the best DC in the nation and has bailed us out more than one team needs!!! We simply can’t and should not rely on the defense to play the game–to be a great team you have to have and Offense, not just one great player. If Bud left B’Burg tomr Hokie Nation would be in real trouble. Beamer is the greatest coach in college football history and he will make the right choice when he is ready–you can be confident in that.
GO HOKIES!!!!
Comment by Bleeds Maroon — September 2, 2008 @ 8:21 pm
I think David @ 7:26 is most on the mark. Bustle ran a clunky, stodgy offense, as does Stiney. But, I think, the real problem is probably ol’ Frankie is the puppet master. He is pulling Stiney’s strings and only letting him have so much leeway in what to call on offense. And for calling a play between the guards on 4th and 1… thats a harken back the the days when Bustle ALWAYS ran behind the motion back at the goal line… Remember those days???
I say let Frank the puppetmaster give Stiney enough string to choke himself or string a good season together.
I think Tech and Glennon would do just fine this year if Frank and Stiney could decide on what … to do, and decide on a reasonable course of attack.
But, like usual, Frank will stay with the stinking ship that is Stiney the tug boat and play like it is 1977.
WE NEED A NEW OC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by Cburg_Norm — September 2, 2008 @ 8:35 pm

I think this is probably good news for our team. HOWEVER, why does everyone have to bad mouth Glennon? Glennon has done alot of good things for this team and program. How can you call yourselves fans when all you do is sit at arm’s length and criticize. Just be happy Tyrod is back and be positive about that. No need for the negativity.
That’s not what the Hokie Nation is about.
Comment by Whitney — September 2, 2008 @ 8:59 pm
The root problem is the offense itself and the lame coordinator who has been learning on the job for 7 years…meanwhile bud foster has held the program together with defense to get where we have gotten. Stinespring has to go and from what I hear, the team has already lost faith in Stiney anyway and his loser schemes, broken players and completely inappropriate calls..
Comment by rhokies — September 2, 2008 @ 9:16 pm
Oh man…I just bought all the Febreeze Air Freshener from the local market so I could stand to watch the Hokies this year, and now Frank switches to the 2QB System – I guess I’ll still need for playcalling purposes.
We still have to wonder: “What is Frank thinking?” in the first place. Nike must have offered a great deal on red jerseys. Hopefully they retracted as well.
Comment by Mr Hokie — September 2, 2008 @ 9:29 pm
Glennon will never play in the NFL. So why should we worry about Tyrod’s extra year of eligibility? The fact is, do you think Tyrod will play in the NFL? Will he leave early? Not in a million years is the answer. Tyrod is a good college quarterback and that is about it. He is the right fit for VT’s system and personnel right now though. Glennon is that guy that always interviews really well but when he’s offered the job, never performs and eventually is fired or tries to find work elsewhere. Tech is just down this year. The defense especially. Look what Alabama did to Clemson. They ran the ball right down their throat. That’s what Tech should be doing but their line sucks again this year. Just because a horrible line from last year returns 4 starters doesn’t mean they’re any good. The whole team is just not that good this year. We should enjoy this year but look forward to next year.
Comment by t bahgs — September 2, 2008 @ 9:36 pm
For those who didn’t notice, one bright spot of the day was the unveiling of VT’s new long snapper, redshirt freshman Collin Carroll. He was 7 for 7 in accuracy on his snaps. Not bad for his first game!

Get off of Steinspring, Get off a Glennon, get off of Tyrod-you are setting him for failure too! The hokies dropped one on Saturday. Big deal. You are same people that watch football on Saturday’s and cheer for the underdog to win and when it happens you jump up and down in joy. Now it happened to you-so what! Turn your tickets in, stop going to games. There are plenty of people who appreciate all that this team has done over the years to put our school on the national stage and would love to take your tickets. To even be in a national radio show debate is awesome-don’t hear that same debate on the radio about UVA! This is a team game and this roster lost a lot of leadership. If you have ever played a sport in your life, you know that it takes time to mold & gel a unit. Sometimes, summer and the four weeks before school is not long enough. This is a talented group of athletes that want nothing more than to go out and give YOU something to talk about. Lucky for you, they don’t read this kind of trash and are back in the room trying to be better coaches, better players, better teammates, and ultimately better students! You all should be ashamed of yourselves. There was someone who posted on Sean glenon’s facebook page that they wished he was one of the 32 victims. This has gone too far and is simply pathetic! you’re not a hokie fan, stop pretending you’re one!
Comment by Enjoy the Game People — September 2, 2008 @ 10:22 pm
Excuse me Enjoy the game, but please don’t cast stones. We’re all here DISCUSSING what we THINK is best for the team and Virginia Tech football. You know… they’re opinions and we’re entitled to them. A good fan critiques when things aren’t going well and points out what can be done better. You want us to just sit back and watch the team crash and burn? Some of us give $$ to this program as well. And there are things you can say to stick up for Sean Glennon, but not Stinespring. He is an adult, being paid for this job, and he s**** at it.
The only thing I agree with is what I read on Sean Glennon’s wall. Absolutely disgusting. However, if you look at the people who wrote some of those god awful things, they aren’t hokies. They’re in other networks… like high schools.
Comment by @Enjoy the Game People — September 2, 2008 @ 11:01 pm
Ok, for all yall who keep pointing to the 1 interception last year, that’s the ONLY one you can point to!!!! How many interceptions, bungled snaps, slow-moving attempted evasive failed maneuvers and folding like a leaf collapses has Glennon exhibited time after time on a consistent basis? Countless!
Glennon is NOT a good athlete. He moves like he’s underwater; he doesn’t see the whole field. He folds when he is touched by a defender in the slightest way. He is not consistently good even though he has sporadic good plays. You can’t just look at his total stats, you have to look at how the team plays for him.
Watch how the team plays with Tyrod and compare that to Glennon. Its obvious we are better with Tyrod than Glennon.
Granted, Glennon is not the only problem. I agree we need a new OC and the off. line is still bad. And for the first time since Dooley our defense worried me…..so Glennon doesn’t get all the blame. But its plain to all objective people who watch us play, Tyrod is the better QB and the team plays better with him than without him.
Beamer needs to get over this loyalty thing when it means our team suffers. Put Glennon in 2nd place and get rid of the OC.
Comment by Ralph Cummings — September 2, 2008 @ 11:26 pm
If the EC game isn’t enough incentive to fire up the Hokies then maybe their YouTube debut in the clip about Clemson and Tech will. It was very unflattering and if I was a Tech football player I would want to make them eat their words. We’ll see how much heart they have.
Comment by TOM — September 2, 2008 @ 11:51 pm
Brian Steinspring cost us the Kansas game – HE is a horrible play caller, I don’t put the ECU loss on Glennon, he didn’t fare well, but what kid of Bud Foster D was that, too many half-a$$ tackles, too many missed tackles, I know they’re young but d@mn, then to lose on a blocked punt – Beamer should have his guys coached up better than that – and then he pulls the quick hook on Glennon, when Glennon wasn’t the only fault of the game, I feel bad for what that kid has had to put up with!
Comment by Sick of this BS — September 3, 2008 @ 12:00 am
It’s time for a lot of people to remember that college football is just a game. Shawn Glennon has been an exemplary team player for Tech, and he certainly does not deserve the criticism — especially the glee that some show with the change back to Tyrod. He did not get the punt blocked. He wasn’t the ones who weren’t wrapping up on tackles. And people need to remember just how well he did last year. he was, after all, the MVP of the ACC championship game. Give the guy some respect and lay off. He’s a college kid, after all is said and done.
Comment by George — September 3, 2008 @ 7:43 am
Va. Tech has never had a good OC. When Vick was here, do you think the play was drawn up the way Vick excuted it. NO! Sean is a good guy, but when you run an option play with Sean, he pitches 98% of the time and that’s what other defenses know. Tech is very easy to scheme against with an immobile QB. So good luck to you Sean and let usher another QB. But we still need to work on a new OC. If T2 is that good, he wasn’t going to be here 3 more years anyways.
Comment by VT Grad 80 — September 3, 2008 @ 7:45 am
How about firing Frank himself. He is responsible for the mess he made and for the OC. He held the school hostage for a lot of money for him and his assistants and the school deserves more. Fire him now because nobody else wants him either.
Comment by Fire_Frank — September 3, 2008 @ 8:20 am
That was a crazy upset, Clemson got spanked as well. Terps only won by 7 to Deleware. ACC is not looking too hot so far! I hope things change.

Why is everyone giving the O-line a pass? Other than DeChristopher, this group was to be the best we have had in many a year. The one time they gave Glennon time, he hit a big play. The O-line hurt last year and it hurts this year; no excuses please! Anyone see the clip of Sabin and Alabama in practice? Sabin was screaming to his players “Finish, Finish, Finish every play!” We need some of that on offense. I agree, a proven OC is mandatory.
Comment by Tired of This — September 3, 2008 @ 8:54 am
This may pay off, it may not. We have been playing with the same offensive style for ten years, no wonder we’re figured out. Yes it did work for some of the teams of the past because the talent was there, but you can’t take a new O-ine and expect them to run the same plays that your golden boys did. Go find a job somewhere else Stinespring. Maybe UVA? They need all the help they can get!

It reminds me of when Vick was a Freshman against JMU (the flip in the endzone game)and fans were treated to things to come. However when the highly recruited backup QB played due to Vick’s twisted ankle, our team looked average again. Once fans (especially those that have donated a ton of money in a bad economy) want the very best “product” player on the field.
Comment by alphahokie — September 3, 2008 @ 9:18 am
I noticed this last year as well as in the first game this year. When the Hokies are punting the ball it looks as though the punter is too close to the line of scrimmage.

You guys are all delusional. This team wasn’t that great last year and they are not that great this year. You can blame anybody you want but the ultimate blame needs to be on Frank.
He has let these guys do whatever they want off the field and he’s overlooked the thug play on the field. Now he’s not getting the talent he once got and the players are average.
Tyrod is better than Glennon but he is not Mike Vick. Even when he ran around last year other teams were able to stop him.
Wake up Hokies, the ride is over.

Bout time. I am sick of going to games knowing our QB is going to lose the game and not be able to make plays. GO TYROD!!!!!!

After reading the responses to the 2 QB system, I assume that everyone that has posted to this thread that all will be fine by switching QBs. You have one QB that made the team look good and you expect them all to look good from then on out. However, it is assumed that the next one has to be better than the last one. So if you experience a let down and the expectations are too high then it is a hard pill to swallow if things dont go your way. Tech will never be in the same league as the USCs, the LSUs, and all other the national championship contendors because they can not recruit the same caliber players as these teams year end and year out. This thinking also goes across the board to the other football programs in the state. But hey, if it makes you feel better, the you can excercise your right to gripe about the things that you can’t control, but you should know that it wont do you any good.

The QB did not lose the game Saturday Walrus. It was a total team effort, defense, special team, and the OC. Just because Beamer threw Glennon under the bus does not mean everyone else should also. Until play calliing and offensive line play improves, it does not matter who is the QB. The mistakes will continue and the losses will mount.

Look here, Frank is trying to be loyal to his OC like the college admin was to him. He was not doing well for the first few years, then he turned it around. He is trying to give Stinespring the same benefit. Stinespring has had 8?, 9? years now?? He still has not produced. Yes, we have put up some numbers along the way, but they are due to special players rising above a mediocre OC. These are players like Jones, Suggs, and more. What stinespring has not been able to do is the reverse. That is to elevate mediocre players into being a great team.
The defense bothered me, sure it did. I have faith in Bud Foster. He will fix what needs to be fixed – and he will have it done before the OC ever gets off the pot.
The o-line is better. It is the better that comes from experience. I really don’t attribute it to the OC. Notice that once one of the unit was knocked out, they were no longer effective.
Frank is our coach. He is a dang good coach, maybe a great coach. His loyalty is one of his best characteristics. Sometimes, he carries it a bit too far.

Here are some things to ponder…
1.Frank Beamer and his staff are
all way over their heads. Frank is a good man but he should be watching from the stands. He proves it every time he gets in a big game, especially last years bowl game.
2.Michael Vick was an exceptionally quick and fast player. He was lightning in a bottle. Marcus, Tyrod, and a hundred others across the country do not and will not match up. Beamer is incapable of seeing that, obviously.
3.Short of having another Michael Vick, just having an ‘athletic’quarter back aka fast black guy, will win in the woefully weak ACC, but rarely if ever in the big game.
4.Lineman can chip block for a quarterback who is out of the pocket two seconds into a play, they can even look pretty good.Receivers can run crossing or down field patterns and even create some sensational hook ups. Also the quarter-back can run against the poorly coached and average defensive teams.
5.Tom Brady would have a hard time running the Hokie offense. He has to throw the ball where a receiver is going to be before he makes his cut. If a receiver is used to creating, it is hopeless for a pocket passer to do anything other than telegraph his intentions through eye contact. If he is counting on a player doing what he practices and is assumedly coached to do,and he doesn’t do it,interceptions and incompletions are the only possible result.
6. Beamer and his staff are mixing apples and oranges and they do not even know it, or they are afraid to admit it.
7.They are incapable of handling NFL quality athletes. Those guys are in charge off the field and on the field. They decide when they are going to play and when they are going to take a play off. They only listen to Beamer and his staff if they feel like it. I could give countless anecdotes to proove it, but if you know and understand the game you do not need to hear them from me.
8.When is Beamer going to earn his salary, stand up quit mumbling and say what he believes and thinks. What in the hell did they do last spring and this summer. I heard Steinspring on Roberts sports show a week before the first game. He sounded like someone who had been wandering
around lost in the Smokies and came out with a head injury wondering where he was, and he found out he was the Hokie offensive coordinator.
8.When you do not have your personnel decisions made, who red shirts etc. how can you be ready for the game?. Forget Glennon, he did not have a chance on this poorly coached team, they barely know who will be on the field let alone what they are going to do when they get there. How about timing routs, clearing zones, overloading zones, exploiting defensive tendancies. Blocking schemes, backs blocking, and all the basics you need to get the tough five yards when you need to run out the clock are out the window when you move to your uncoached, undesciplined, make it up as you go offense we will now be exposed to, for the rest of the year.
9.Thank God for the extremely weak ACC and the Ferrum’s of the world. You will likely be able to pull the wool over the eye’s of the Hokie Nation again this year.
Please stand up and quit mumbling, say what you think and mean what you say. Oh! since you are now going to figure out who is going to play, and what you need to do for the rest of the year, why don’t you and your staff consider donating to charity the part of your salary you did not earn from the end of last year to this week.
Nothing personal, just tired of the same old crap.

Keep on doing what you’ve always done and you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got! Except for a few fluke years with Michael Vick, Frank Beamer has never produced a potent offense.
With college football now in an era of quick-strike spread offensive schemes Tech is getting left far behind. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Frank has got to go if a potent offense is what you Hokies are looking for. Glennon and Stiney are really not the problem here. It’s your beloved leader himself! If you think Frank is great then stop complaining about the predictable, dated offense, the QB and the OC year after year. It’s not going to change while Frank’s at the helm!
Comment by Franks_Problem — September 3, 2008 @ 4:49 pm
Let’s hope we need to read between the lines on this issue: Beamer can’t/won’t, in my opinion, simply say, “I’m benching Glennon.” It’s a little more gentle to say, “I’m going back to the two QB system,” even though everyone knows it doesn’t work very well. In reality, I think Beamer knows he’s going to let the 2 QB system last about a half, or maybe even a game, but after that, Glennon will need to wear a hat to keep the sun from burning his head. I feel sorry for the guy because I know he’s doing all he can for the team. However, he’s laid too many eggs at the wrong time and with him there’s too great a risk that we’ll lose conference games against the likes of Miami, FSU, etc. We simply can’t take that chance. It would mean a miserable season this year and could have disastrous consequences when it comes to letter of intent day next year. But the far bigger problem is Stinespring – and Beamer’s unwavering loyalty to him. As long as he’s up in the booth calling the plays, we’re saddled with offensive mediocrity – even with Taylor taking the snaps.

Most of you are a bunch of idiots. Yeah an inexperienced team lost a game to a team (ECU) that not many would want to play. But look at your program, one of the winningest teams since 1995. Blacksburg is beautiful, but it’s not the fun and sun of cali or florida. Tech takes recruiting classes that are hardly ever in the top 15, but routinely finishes season there. Maybe you should start cheering and encouraging them, rather than constantly crying. I was in Charlotte, and while the ECU fans were going nuts, Tech’s was sitting on their hands, I for one was more embarassed about that than anything.

Wow!
Frank Beamer announced that Tyrod Taylor has misplaced his red shirt and will now have to play football in 2008 whether he likes it or not.
Although Taylor was not allowed to speak directly to the media, he was overheard saying “I don’t know what happened to it. It was right here just a minute ago.”
Sean Glennon, rumored to be a quarterback for Virginia Tech, told Taylor, “Here, let me help you find it. ”
Beamer made the announcement during an unusual mid-week press conference which is scheduled only when some disaster has befallen the football team that could affect his year-end bonus (normally every Tuesday at 2 pm).
“I don’t blame Sean for losing the game,” said Beamer. “Well, actually I do, because that’s why I am replacing him. Besides, otherwise I would have to hold the coaches accountable, especially the offensive coordinator, which we don’t really have one of so we use our offensive line coach. Anyway, the point is, we don’t blame Sean. There is plenty of blame to go around for the loss on Saturday, especially for Sean. But Sean is a team player, and although he is disappointed, he wants to do what is best for the team, and right now, that is for him not to be on it.”
Glennon, sitting across the room with his head down, looks up surprised: “What?”
Roanoke Times sports reporter Sandy Bling to Beamer: “So, when exactly did you decide that your strategy of benching your best QB was insanely stupid?”
Beamer: “We think we had the right strategy for the team we thought we had, but it turns out that team graduated in 2002, so we decided to make some adjustments. Michael Vick still has two years of eligibility, so we placed a call to his new school, State Prison University, but he has not called us back yet. In the meantime, we need some more playmakers in the backfield. Also, some running backs, wide receivers, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers, safeties, cornerbacks and kickers. We believe replacing Glennon with Taylor will fix all our problems.”
Stinespring: “Yes, and now we can run the ball up the middle with seven different players instead of just six. This will no doubt put us in the ACC championship game.”
Comment by MNRJMike — September 3, 2008 @ 9:31 pm
The bottom line is that with Stinespring at the helm of the offense, the team will continue to run the same tired plays no matter what players are on the field. Good OC’s know how to improvise and make the most of the offenses strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Bryan Stinespring has NEVER been able to do this.

You can’t hang the Orange Bowl loss on Tyrod. He got a total of 11 plays in the game…Glennon got 50 plus and threw two picks to go along with a sub-.500 completion percentage. If you’re going to blame Tyrod for the one pick returned for a TD against Kansas, you have to do the same for the pick returned to the one-yard line against ECU thrown by Glennon last week. No one play ever tells the story of a game. A QB needs opportunities to overcome the mistakes all quarterbacks make during the course of a game. Tyrod has always shown that given most of the snaps in a game that he can get the job done, Glennon has shown that he cannot make things happen far too many times. Even the blocked punt was more of an indictment on the inability of the offense to move the ball with two minutes left in the game. Don’t waste anymore plays on Glennon…let Tyrod show what he can do with all the snaps.

I live in Greenville NC and have had to endure the wrath of the Pirate fan base since last weekend. My phone battery ran out saturday from all the calls. I said all that to say this WE HAVE NEEDED A NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. I never played football past the 80lb weight class and do not consider my self a student of the game but I, as well as every body in the stadium knows what the play calling will be. A backyard touch football game has more innovative plays. I don’t know how long VT can continue to live off of the big defensive plays. Is Beamer going to let Steinspring pull him down the tubes?
Comment by HOKIE living in ECUville — September 4, 2008 @ 12:46 pm
I guess what all this comes down to is the level of expectation for VT football. We are definitely not on the same level of an Ohio State or USC where national championship chances are routinely expected, so what is typically expected of us in a good season? Generally speaking, I would think that winning the ACC and getting a BCS bid would be a phenominal year, and it usually is (although we can’t ever seal the deal). Beamer has been a great coach to get VT to where it’s at nationally, which is a perennial top 25 team that usually wins a solid 9+ games a year, and fairly often can finish in or near the top 10. I think the problem is that a lot of Vt fans expect more and to finish in the top 5 and play for the national championship…which we aren’t really capable of doing at this time. To have legitimate, and perpetual, shots at the BCS title, a team needs great athletes every year, solid coaching, and great coordinators. We generally do well on recruiting, but not stellar. Some of our coaching and play-calling stinks (especially offense), and special teams has become a weak point sadly. Our coordinators, well, Stinespring is all I need to say. Until we can get at least 2 of those 3 fixed…mainly coaching and coordinators, because good coashes and play-calling can turn average players into great ones…we’re going to be stuck at the plateau we’ve hit…which is at most a top-10 team with maybe 11 or so wins, and getting shellacked in a BCS game.
Comment by Other John — September 4, 2008 @ 1:01 pm
I agree with everything “other John” just said. The only thing I would add to the NC equation is the need for a difference maker at quarterback…a la Vince Young. Although not up to standards Saturday, the defense and ST are top notch most of the time. The offense lags behind because of the OC and his play calling. He needs to be replaced at the end of the season, or the dynamic playmaker Taylor is will never be fully realized.

All of us Hokie supporters and Alumni, especially those of us who donate money, need to start calling the AD. Frank needs to wake up and stop shooting for thw 10 wins every year. I am sick of it. Stinespring is not a college level OC, he doesn’t know how to make adjustments in a game just excuses. Tech had a chance to hire a real OC a few years ago, I still don’t understand that one. Wher the heck is GRIMES? We sure do miss him! I never though I would say this, but I miss Bustle ball. at least he knew how to adjust and could win ballgames. Wake up Hokie Fans, Bud will be leaving us very soon! I say bench Glennon, he has had his chance. He should have went to Richmond when he had the chance.

WERE ANY OF YOU SUPPOSED HOKIE FANS AROUND BACK IN THE PRE-FRANK BEAMER ERA?? Virginia Tech football back in the 70s and early 80s could have barely beaten a single A high school team. If it weren’t for the work of Frank Beamer Virginia Tech football would still be at that level. Yes, Stinespring is awful and yes, I think it’s about time that Frank sucks up his loyalties and fires him. Virginia Tech will always be a great team year after year but will never be up to a National Championship caliber team until we get a National Championship caliber OC. Personally, I feel like year after year we rely solely on the Special Teams and Defense to score the points and keep the game out of reach for the opposing team….wait, isn’t the offense supposed to score the points??!
Yes, Sean Glennon is a good athlete and a good person. I had some rough times at Tech but I was a REGULAR student. How about you all imagine being a 21 year old college student getting death threats from people you don’t even know over a FOOTBALL GAME. I give Sean huge props although I just don’t think he’s the man for the job at Tech. With a weak O-line and running game due to player inexperience and a complete lack of Offensive coaching, we need a player who can run–that being Tyrod Taylor.
Bud Foster will get his defense in order…he always does, but when are we ever going to learn that football is a team sport, not a defensive and special teams sport.
All I’m trying to say is LAY OFF of Sean Glennon. Face it, he’s a better athlete than any of you will ever be. He has put up with a hell of a lot but I think it’s time to try something new to help make up for what we’re lacking. Also, LAY OFF of Frank Beamer. Without him, none of you would have jumped on the Hokie bandwagon. Yes, he needs to get his stuff together and get rid of Stinespring but I’m sick of hearing you “VT fans” put him down. He is one of the best collegiate coaches out there. Period.

I can’t figure how folks can blame Glennon for the offensive woes. He is not a scrambling QB but given time, he picks defenses apart with excellent passes. Running for your life or flat on your back is no way to have to QB. Taylor may outrun a couple but when teams load the box as ECU did because they know what we are going to do, Taylor won’t have a chance either. The real problem? The OC. Has been for the last few years. This year’s defense can’t bail out the OC right now. Fran Tarkenton was an excellent QB but he never won an NFL championship running for his life! Neither of the Mannings would either. Give any good QB time and blocking and he looks great. Clean house on your offensive side of the program and we may get somewhere. We’ve lost every bowl game the last few years thanks to lack of offense. Maybe Foster could handle both sides!

AMEN “TRUE HOKIE”!!!!
I did sit in that cold stadium week after week watching my beloved Hokies loose. The only exciting thing I remember about those times was Bruce Smith winding up that arm at the D-Line. You knew he was up to something….like a sack!!!
With that being said, I echo my sentiments I posted in another blog. We are a young-rebuilding-offensive and defensive team. I am really disappointed in Beamer for giving in to all of the “pressure” to put in Tyrod.
I understand that most of the younger crowd is impatient but I expect more from my coach. I also understand everyone’s disappointment with this years team, but I don’t agree with it. I see my money being given to this university as an investment. As of right now I see that long term investment being threatened with taking Taylor’s red shirt off.
We are a young team!!!! You don’t work for a couple of years and retire, you hang in there for the long haul and “protect” your investment. This did not happen this past week. The market got weak and the client started calling in complaining they were loosing money. So they yanked their investment out.
Even a win over Furman does not need to be celebrated. It will be an easy win and no doubt it will be a defensive win.
Everyone just needs to calm down, settle in watch this team mature and wait for Basketball to start.
Oh yeah, don’t forget to enjoy watching Tyrod cause now he won’t be her very much longer!

I don’t understand why everyone is complaining. Tech is still going to win 9 games and lost 2 or 3. I am not a VT fan by any stretch of the imagination, but as bad as they are the rest of the ACC is worse. Tech fans need to be realistic with there expectations. It doesn’t matter who the QB is or how many they put into a game, VT is still going to be a 9 win team. My suggestion, be happy and be realistic. I never thought I’d see the day when Tech fans got unrealistic, but this is ridiculous!!

Think Everybody is kind of reacting to the OC playcalling and not realizing that we do not have as good of offensive coaches as those on defense. Sherman is definitely Not a receivers Guru and OCain has been fired everywhere he coached recently. You have to have a well prepared offense for Any plays to work. Sooo clean house on the offensive side and start over—cannot get any worse. Beamer is too loyal but has done wonderful things for VT and should be heralded as the Only really good head coach we have ever had.
Comment by flahokie69 — September 7, 2008 @ 5:51 am
The offense has never been truly effective except in the MV#1 years. If it takes a Vick to make your offensive scheme work, you need a new offensive scheme (or at least better play calling).
We can’t rely on recruiting the next Vick to make the offense work. Our offensive line has never been all that great at pass blocking.
Stiney just needs to go. This has been clear for several years now.

Being a Cavalier fan, I think Beamer should give Shaun another shot before change Qb’s. This way he can truley ascertain what is tuly the problem. Shaun is good player and shld not be penalize for someting that truly isn?t his fault. If after giving him aother chance to display his leadership abilities, tht he cannot lead the team effectivly, then maybe switch to Tyrod before using the doube QB system.
