Rating the classes

At this point, Virginia’s 2011 football recruiting class is ranked in the top 25 by rivals.com. Virginia Tech is 35th. Here’s how the two schools’ classes have ranked in the past 10 years:

Big sports weekend ahead

The Roanoke Times will be all over Southwest Virginia and North Carolina this weekend as football season continues to wind down, while basketball season is just getting under way.

In Sunday’s paper, catch full coverage of the ACC football championship game between Virginia Tech and Florida State.

Also, we’ll have full reports from the three high school state semifinal games involving Timesland schools — Christiansburg hosts Harrisonburg, Radford hosts Gate City and Eastern Montgomery plays at Clintwood.

In Monday’s paper, find out what happened in the ACC men’s basketball opener between Virginia and Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum. Also on Sunday, Virgina Tech’s women host Winthrop before the Tech-UVa game. Read more »

Daily Sports Briefing — Friday, July 9

LEBRON JAMES CHOOSES MIAMI in an awkward, made-for-TV goodbye, which is what ESPN predicted would happen this week. Maybe the network’s reporters talked to our good friend Orrie, who correctly predicted the destination on this very blog site a week ago. Nice job, Orrie. If you and Paul the Prognosticating Octopus ever join forces, you could bring Vegas to its knees.

-The real fun’s going on in Cleveland. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert rips into the city’s “former hero,” calling LeBron “narcissistic” and “cowardly” and labels the move a “shameful display of selfishness and betrayal.” He also said LeBron “quit” during the playoffs. Tell us how you really feel, Danny. Meanwhile, Cavs fans take the loss in stride…by burning LeBron’s jersey and saying things like “I thought the whole thing was tasteless, despicable, true trash and historic garbage.” I like that: Historic garbage. Garbage has never felt so honored.

UVa-Clemson at noon

Charlottesville, VA ­ The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that Virginia’s home football game vs. Clemson on Nov. 22 will kick off at noon at Scott Stadium. The game will be broadcast by Raycom on the ACC¹s syndicated network of stations.
 
Fans can purchase tickets for the game and online at VirginiaSports.com. In-person or telephone purchases are available by calling 1-800-542-UVA1 (8821) or  visiting the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium.
 
Here are the other ACC television selections for Nov.  20 and 22:
 
Thursday, Nov. 20

(previously announced) Miami at Georgia Tech, ESPN, 7:30 pm

Saturday, Nov. 22

Clemson at Virginia, Raycom, 12 Noon (split network)
