Finally some respect for James River. At least you got them into the rankings a week before the season is over, because they've been one the best teams all season and it takes you 3 months before you realize that.

james river probably shouldn't be on the list anyway. They did lose to LB twice they weren't even close in those games either!

John

And you're talking about a school with over twice the enrollment of James River? James River has handily beat all of their competition this season, including 2 other AA teams. You compare teams on their ability to win, and it looks like James River is alot better at winning than Lord Botetourt. Their only two losses this year have come to LB, and River played them close most of the game. Check back when James River's in the state tournament and LB's sittin at home like last year.

James River will be behind Radford and GW this year. Sorry, but it's true. I've seen all three play and JR is good, but they don't quite take the cake. I'd like to see them win it, but right now they are definitely 3rd best.

James River = Single A or just NOT GOOD!!!

Andy

That's whats wrong with basketball fans like Peter. Because they see Single A, they automatically think 'no talent' , yeah, they might not have the school population to draw from like Hidden Valley, but they contend with other Single A schools and thats why they have classifications. Stop your bias and realize a good team on any level.

you have to be in high school because that is the most unintelligent comment that has been posted

Fred

That's a brilliant statement considering that James River also has a winning record against AA teams. You must have put a lot of thought and effort into that one Peter. Point taken.

Hidden Valley is the best AA school in the state in my opinion. Even though Hidden Valley beat Fleming this year I feel Fleming should be ranked #1 for the simple fact that Fleming plays a tougher schedule than Hidden Valley. Also the game between Fleming and Hidden Valley went into overtime, and it was in the beginning of the year. Hidden Valley lost to Pulaski and Fleming beat them twice.

My last comment was in response to Peter's brilliant mathematical equation

John

James River easily beat Staunton River twice, defeated Amherst by 15 or so and match up with them again on the 15th at James River, which should again go in JR's favor. As well as playing Liberty even in a scrimmage. The two losses to LB were by 15 or so, but the games were alot closer than the scoreboard. Give those guys a visit and then honestly tell me they are "not good" and I'll believe you.

James River is deserving of being on this list. Andy was dead on in stating that teams need to be respected within their own division. JR is a team that has gone out of their district and played a number of AA teams in order to boost their strength of schedule. They have done this with great success. Their two losses have both come to Lord Botetourt, but that is accurately reflected in the fact that LB is ranked above them.

This team put together an amazing season last year and will continue to do so for years to come, being that they start three sophomores. I challenge you to find any other team with such a strong youth movement in the area.

Take a look at Galax High School basketball team! We have enjoyed exciting basketball from this team.

John needs to know that James River beat SR by 10 points and Lord Botetourt scored 99 points on SR and won by 50 but it should have been more.

And...

LB dominated JR in every aspect of the game of basketball.

back to the james river discussion. yes they have beat most of the single A teams they have played very easily...they always do. the pioneer district is a joke though, and so is their schedule out of district too. When they played LB their major weaknesses were exposed and they have yet to play another team like that. once they get into regionals or a game with GW then we can talk about how good they are. this was the same talk we heard last year about a STATE run and they were polverized in their first game of the state tournament. if they encounter another team that has someone that can stop ware from grabbin rebounds and getting the easy put backs and a press like LB has they will probably lose...again. james river is becoming at Single A power house but that is not a incredible feat in the virginia basketball world. congradulations to james river in their success this year but if they were to play any other team in the top ten they would lose. sorry, just had to bring the realistic aspect to this forum....

btw stanton river might as well be single A so dont compare them when talkin about james river's AA schedule...

I've rated/ranked the Timesland teams based on games played through 2/13. My methodology is a bit different than what you might be used to seeing...it is computer based and is not a human poll. Its also based solely on games played between the Timesland teams. And if you don't see your team on the list, its probably because they didn't meet the minimum number of intra-Timesland games that needed to be played in order to be included. You can view the rankings here:

I guess Peter doesn't know what he's talking about because James River beat Staunton River by 18 and 23 points in each game. And congratulations to LB for scheduling weak Floyd Co. which has a couple of wins all season and Auburn, two single A schools that aren't strong. LB won the weak Blue Ridge this year, when they get to regions they will also find a good team and will be beat. And yes James River is a single A powerhouse, and thats what they should be judged on, not compared to AA teams.

Who decides the timesland top ten anyway? Why in the girls would you have Blacksburg (4-6 dist rec) and LB (four of 13 wins vs Allegh & Byrd) ranked in the top 10 over AAA PH who has a way better overall record and a 6-4 district record? Is Anderson trying to say that the AA schools are much better than the AAA schools in the area? Are we going off tradition? I doubt very seriously LB would have finished in the top three of the WVD.

I just posted the latest Boys Basketball ratings and rankings. I expanded the field to include all teams that are reported on Roanoke.com. So there are now 77 teams appearing in the rankings. As before, any teams with less than 10 games played against this field of teams were omitted. Here is the link again:

I think JR is a great team but comparing LB and JR the two seem to not even be close i think JR beats them in every aspect of the game and if i am not mistaken i think LB was sittin on there butt at home watching JR make it too the state finals last year soo LB i suggest u get Guys in there that can play like a team and not some street ball players!!

JR had an excellent season last year and it continued on into this year but they have yet to get the respect they deserve. They beat the teams last year you that you want them to beat this year and they got no respect. They were one of the few teams to make it to Richmond last year and they still got no respect. They did go on a STATE run last year and yes, they lost, but where was LB at the time –oh yeah – in Botetourt County at school.

These players not only play well and play as a team, they show respect on and off the court and you can't tell me that about LB. You can rationalize all you want about this and that but hands down, River is the best. They have classifications of the schools for a reason and that should mean something.

Lets be happy for both schools. They both won their district. We sometimes get caught in wanting to tear down schools and not be glad that they had a positive season. Congrats to both and all of the other boys and girls programs on a good season. I coached at the High-School and College level so I have seen the good and bad on the players. We should all be wishing for success and not jealous for failure. Again the best to all that are still playing.

What do you know? Lord Botetourt blows a game when they are the higher seed and they will be sitting around watching James River continue post season play as usual.

Quick thoughts

  • Poll voters get it right -

Who knew the Virginia football program carried so much weight? Southern Cal moved up from No. 3 to No. 1 in the Associated Press media poll, and from No. 2 to No. 1 in the coaches’ poll, after its 52-7 rout of UVa in Charlottesville. “To see a team go on the road and play a New Year’s Day bowl team from last season, and not only play them but destroy them, how could you not reward that team?” voter Stewart Mandel of SI.com told the AP. Now we all know UVa is hardly the same team that played on Jan. 1. But the voters still got this right. USC proved more at UVa than a Georgia team that beat Division I-AA Georgia Southern or an Ohio State team that beat I-AA Youngstown State. — Mark Berman

  • ACC stinks it up -

Arkansas State won at Texas A&M. Bowling Green upset Pitt. Louisiana Tech beat Mississippi State. But the ACC laid the biggest egg of all in Week 1, reinforcing its reputation as a weak conference. Preseason ACC favorite Clemson was squashed by Alabama. ECU upset the Hokies. USC flattened UVa. Maryland only beat Delaware by a 14-7 score, and UNC had to rally to beat McNeese State. On Thursday, South Carolina shut out N.C. State. At least Wake Forest beat Baylor. But the ACC was an object of ridicule on national sports talk radio Saturday night, and rightly so. And it won’t get any better next weekend when Miami visits Florida. — Mark Berman

  • Intriguing ACC games for VT hoops -

The 2008-09 schedule for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was released this week, and the Hokies will begin and end the ACC portion of it in noteworthy fashion. Their ACC opener will be a Sunday night visit to Durham on Jan. 4 to take on Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski and Duke in a game airing on Fox Sports Net. Their next game features a visit to Cassell Coliseum by Virginia. And the Hokies better hope they have a good record before their final three games of the regular season, because that will be the toughest stretch of their year by far. They host Duke in an ABC game on Feb. 28, followed by a March 4 visit from Tyler Hansbrough and North Carolina in an ESPN game. The regular-season finale is a trip to Florida State, where Tech always loses. — Mark Berman

  • Good showing for UVa at Olympics -

With the Olympics over, UVa has plenty to be proud of. Ex-Cav Angela Hucles, the leading goal scorer in UVa history, now has to be considered one of the best female athletes UVa has ever produced. Not only did she win her second gold with the U.S. women’s soccer team, but she scored a team-high four goals in Beijing — including two in the semifinals and one in the quarterfinals. Ex-Cav Lindsay Shoop also won gold — one of three UVa grads to medal in rowing. And Dawn Staley was part of a winning basketball team as an assistant. As for Virginia Tech? Well, ex-Hokie Ieva Kublina had a few good basketball games for Latvia. And Queen Harrison reached a hurdles semifinal at the age of 19. London could be in her future. — Mark Berman

  • Hightower making us look good -

Tim Hightower is making The Roanoke Times — and Division I-AA football in this state — look good. Hightower was a standout running back at Richmond last fall, helping the Spiders reach the I-AA semifinals. We chose him as the Roanoke Times’ state Division I offensive player of the year, eschewing I-A stars. Now comes word that the fifth-round draft pick will likely be Edgerrin James’ top backup with the Arizona Cardinals. Good for him. I just hope he fares better off the field than our offensive player of the year picks in 1999 and 2004, Michael and Marcus Vick. — Mark Berman
