How's your bracket doing?

Updated: Saturday, March 29, 3:36 p.m.

It's three hours before the regional finals begin, and we have an excellent chance to see four No. 1 seeds reach the Final Four for the first time. I picked all but Memphis to go, but after what the Tigers did to Michigan State last night my confidence in that pick is a bit less than it was.

I'm all for Davidson knocking off Kansas so we can see more of Stephen Curry, but the Jayhawks are awfully good. This is one Goliath that won't be overconfident. Rush, Robinson and Chalmers, I'm afraid, are just too much.

Xavier has been fiesty and resilient, but UCLA is just too big and too strong. And if it wasn't for Curry, we' be talking about Kevin Love being the best player left in the tournament.

North Carolina is supposed to be in this position so we take them for granted. Louisville is back on the national scene and playing well, so it's easy to sway toward them. But the Tar Heels are so hard to guard because they have so many weapons in the starting lineup and coming off the bench.

I have Texas beating Memphis, and I still expect that will happen. This is a great matchup of guards and athletes. Memphis is playing its best basketball right now probably because so many have been saying they are the most vulnerable No. 1 seed and most likely to be the first one beaten. So the Tigers will come very close.

Original post

After an uneventful first day, those 12s and 13s winning in Tampa on Friday surely busted some brackets out there.

Did you have UConn going on a big run? What about Drake, Clemson and Vanderbilt?

My bracket didn't suffer too much damage. I had Clemson and UConn getting to the Sweet 16, but that was as far as I was willing to take those teams. Some my Sweet 16 is down to 14 survivors heading into the second round.

Here's the link to my bracket. In the related box, just click the words that say Download Jeff Gilbert's bracket.

Let me know how you're doing by leaving a comment. Is your Sweet 16 intact? Have you lost a Final Four team? Who's in your Final Four and why? -- Jeff Gilbert

Hokie Highlander

My bracket has been consistant so far - 75% right all 4 days. And I've already lost 75% of my Sweet 16, but only 1 of my Elite 8.

Well, Hokie Highlander you're doing a little better than I am. My Sweet 16 count is only 9. But the only Elite Eight team I've lost is Duke. And my Final Four is intact. So you are ahead of me for now. Who's in your Final Four?

Other John

I'm down to just 9 of my Sweet 16, and I lost Pitt and Georgetown out of my Elite 8 too. I also lost G-town out of the finals, so my bracket is basically busted for a second year in a row, but not nearly as awful as last year. I lost 3 of my 4 final four teams after the first weekend and both of my finals teams then.

Would Other John be the original John Thompson at G'town? Well, you and lots of others are suffering from the fate of the Hoyas. I had them going one more round, but just didn't see them making it back this year without Jeff Green. So I had them losing to Wisconsin in the Elite Eight. Sure glad I saw it that way now.

I wish I was JT and had his money. Instead I'm just a guy who makes lousy picks for the tournament. I think it's been 5 or 6 years since I got the final game pairing right.

Money isn't everything Other John. Last year I had Florida vs. Georgetown, turning my back on my beloved Buckeyes. That's one I was glad to get wrong. I still like UNC-UCLA for this year. Kansas is the team I most afraid of getting in my way.

I still have UCLA in mine, but had Georgetown also in the final. My 2nd chance braket still has UCLA, but I wound up leaning UNC over Kansas like you've got. We'll see how things go. Do you think Davidson has any more wins in them? On a side note, picking the women's side is a heck of a lot easier, just go with the higher seeds and you can get about 90% of the picks right. And I also know money isn't everything, but a little extra would go a long way!

Oops. I misquoted myself, if that's possible. I actually have UCLA over Kansas in the final. Probably just thinking I should have put UNC in there after the way they've played. I really don't think Davidson will beat Wisconsin. Michael Flowers should be able to hang with Curry. I've watched Wisconsin several times this year, and there defense is outstanding. I also think their big bodies can slow down Lovedale as well. He's been a big part of Davidson's run. Wisconsin is deceiving. They're one of those teams that when you lose to them you probably keep thinking that you should have won. They aren't flashy, but they get a lead and don't let go.

i got 25/32 in the first round and 11/16 in the second.

jeff, my bracket is exactly like yours from here on out except that i didn't have wisky in the elite 8 and i have wvu in the elite eight.

i'm kicking myself for overestimating usc. how many times have i been told not to trust freshman-led teams?

Sorry, I fell a little behind on keeping up here. Kind Of Stressed, you have me beat overall and it looks like I can't catch you. The leader in my pool has me by six points, and I can only get within 1 point of him if Memphis loses to Texas in the regional final. So I'm playing for second place at best. Enjoy the games.

My bad Jeff, I actually got 24/32 in the 1st round so if Wisky advances to the Elite 8 (should happen) and Xavier beats WVU then you will beat me by 1.

The Sweet 16 matchup I am most looking forward to has to be Louisville vs. Tennessee. Heck, I look forward to all of the games, actually!!

Quick thoughts

  • Poll voters get it right -

Who knew the Virginia football program carried so much weight? Southern Cal moved up from No. 3 to No. 1 in the Associated Press media poll, and from No. 2 to No. 1 in the coaches’ poll, after its 52-7 rout of UVa in Charlottesville. “To see a team go on the road and play a New Year’s Day bowl team from last season, and not only play them but destroy them, how could you not reward that team?” voter Stewart Mandel of SI.com told the AP. Now we all know UVa is hardly the same team that played on Jan. 1. But the voters still got this right. USC proved more at UVa than a Georgia team that beat Division I-AA Georgia Southern or an Ohio State team that beat I-AA Youngstown State. — Mark Berman

  • ACC stinks it up -

Arkansas State won at Texas A&M. Bowling Green upset Pitt. Louisiana Tech beat Mississippi State. But the ACC laid the biggest egg of all in Week 1, reinforcing its reputation as a weak conference. Preseason ACC favorite Clemson was squashed by Alabama. ECU upset the Hokies. USC flattened UVa. Maryland only beat Delaware by a 14-7 score, and UNC had to rally to beat McNeese State. On Thursday, South Carolina shut out N.C. State. At least Wake Forest beat Baylor. But the ACC was an object of ridicule on national sports talk radio Saturday night, and rightly so. And it won’t get any better next weekend when Miami visits Florida. — Mark Berman

  • Intriguing ACC games for VT hoops -

The 2008-09 schedule for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was released this week, and the Hokies will begin and end the ACC portion of it in noteworthy fashion. Their ACC opener will be a Sunday night visit to Durham on Jan. 4 to take on Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski and Duke in a game airing on Fox Sports Net. Their next game features a visit to Cassell Coliseum by Virginia. And the Hokies better hope they have a good record before their final three games of the regular season, because that will be the toughest stretch of their year by far. They host Duke in an ABC game on Feb. 28, followed by a March 4 visit from Tyler Hansbrough and North Carolina in an ESPN game. The regular-season finale is a trip to Florida State, where Tech always loses. — Mark Berman

  • Good showing for UVa at Olympics -

With the Olympics over, UVa has plenty to be proud of. Ex-Cav Angela Hucles, the leading goal scorer in UVa history, now has to be considered one of the best female athletes UVa has ever produced. Not only did she win her second gold with the U.S. women’s soccer team, but she scored a team-high four goals in Beijing — including two in the semifinals and one in the quarterfinals. Ex-Cav Lindsay Shoop also won gold — one of three UVa grads to medal in rowing. And Dawn Staley was part of a winning basketball team as an assistant. As for Virginia Tech? Well, ex-Hokie Ieva Kublina had a few good basketball games for Latvia. And Queen Harrison reached a hurdles semifinal at the age of 19. London could be in her future. — Mark Berman

  • Hightower making us look good -

Tim Hightower is making The Roanoke Times — and Division I-AA football in this state — look good. Hightower was a standout running back at Richmond last fall, helping the Spiders reach the I-AA semifinals. We chose him as the Roanoke Times’ state Division I offensive player of the year, eschewing I-A stars. Now comes word that the fifth-round draft pick will likely be Edgerrin James’ top backup with the Arizona Cardinals. Good for him. I just hope he fares better off the field than our offensive player of the year picks in 1999 and 2004, Michael and Marcus Vick. — Mark Berman
