RefreshRT, rethinking roanoke.com

Welcome Times Square; goodbye to From the Newsroom & RefreshRT

Hi RefreshRT fans!

Today, we’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the Roanoke Times blog family: Times Square.

The new blog is meant to be a hub of information about The Roanoke Times and the stories we produce. It will be managed by our social media editor Stephanie Ogilvie, who plans to keep it fresh with everything from our most popular story of the day to sharing news about our website redesign.

Here’s how Stephanie explains it: “We see this space as a community gathering place to help you connect with us — and other readers. We envision a bustling, digital public square (which helped inspire the name) — and a place to speak directly with you about why we do what we do.”

Times Square will be the new go-to place for newsroom information, and so it will absorb the From the Newsroom blog, which will be retired.

And it will also absorb this blog, whose goal had been to tell readers about new offerings from The Roanoke Times. Now that will be within the realm of Times Square, which the RefreshRT team will help populate.

So as we gear up to introduce our new website, please head to Times Square for the latest updates. We’re looking forward to seeing how readers will use the new blog and to the next step in the evolution of roanoke.com.

  1. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Many thanks!

  2. I had the great pleasure of meeting one of my fellow “Voices of the Valley” contributor’s yesterday. Among the many things we discussed were the postings on blogs and such. We both agreed that if the RT would require people to use their real name that it would ad so much more to the discussion. Certainly many contributors hiding behind their blog name do make excellent valid points, but we both believe that there simply is no valid reason that people shouldn’t use their real name. It would do away with so many of the problems and issues you all are fully aware of. We hope in due time you will seriously consider this. Maybe there should be two threads on a discussion…..Those for people using their real name and one for everyone else. I think the one with real names being used would certainly be the most popular enticing even stronger interest from the public and readers.

  3. I am so angry and sad right now…..Enough is enough, if time for this country to address this insane madness…..I’m not going to get into the gun issue debate, other than to say there is much this country can do to address this problem….I’m going outside and take down my Christmas flag, and will put up the American Flag upside down to show my support and distress over this tragic time in American History and that something needs to be done. If you agree, share and spread the idea around.

  4. I don’t know if this the correct place to post this but I’m having an issue. I like to read some of the blogs on Roanoke.com and I do this on my Android. A few days ago, all the blogs began only displaying as the full site, not for mobile as they had before. The main site and news stories still seem to have the “m”. Is this just me and something with my phone??

    Comment by Susan — December 20, 2012 @ 6:44 pm

  5. Hi Susan, it is not just your phone. We made the switch recently for the blogs because we had received complaints about how the mobile version of the blog sites were stripped-down versions of the actual post. By going with the full site view, you get to see everything accompanying each post.
If you’re having other problems with the m.roanoke.com site (which works for main site and news stories like you said), please let us know.
    Thank you!

  6. Thank you for answering my question Kathy. I have to say it’s very disappointing that I won’t be able to read my favorite blogs any longer. I’ve been missing them the last few days.

  7. Susan, I don’t understand. You can still get the blogs on your phone, it’s just that you’ll get the full site version and not a bare-bones version. You can enlarge the size of the text on the screen, if that’s what you mean by not being able to read. Let me know if this helps. Thanks!

  8. I’ve been wondering why my mobile viewing seemed to have been buggered all to heck lately, but I see Susan got here ahead of me! I understand why full site viewing might be preferable for some, especially for the blogs, but that option has been available all along – all you have to do is scroll to the bottom of the page in mobile view and click “View Full Version.” There is not, so far as I can find, a corresponding way to switch from full to mobile view. If y’all don’t want to go back to default mobile view for the blogs (for those of us reading via Android or iThings and so forth), could you add an easy-to-find button somewhere on each page that allows us to switch from full to mobile view?

  9. Trying to read a page that is not meant for mobile on my Droid is possible, but it’s clumsy, cumbersome, and inefficient. The constant double clicking, waiting to resize, trying to scroll around to find what you want, and still the font is sometimes so small I can’t read it. I assume that is why most websites today have a mobile version. Going backwards is what it seems like in my opinion. I didn’t see on here a discussion about this, where anyone complained, or that it was changing. That too was frustrating. As Laura pointed out, there was a link to the full site, so it makes no sense to me. On occassion when I am at a regular computer, like today, I try to catch up on my favorite blogs like the Storefront and the Happy Wag, but it’s just disappointing as I mentioned earlier.

  10. Thanks for your comment, Susan.
We are currently looking at resolving this issue, so that users can have either the mobile site or the full site of our blogs depending on which device they are using.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but it has been good to hear from mobile users about what they liked about the mobile site. Bear with us as we continue to improve our delivery system.

How in the world would you know if it was their correct name. Gonna check ID’s? Way to kill a blog before it starts.
